In theory, I agree with you and maybe this is something we can get rolling so in 5 years we have enough nurses to make it happen.
But right now and until then - we don't have enough and if I'm in the hospital and have to choose between not having a nurse/having a nurse with a horrendous census or having an unvaccinated nurse wearing proper ppe - I'm going to choose the nurse.
Also nursing programs are really hard to get into. High requirements for a 4-year program, lottery systems with year+ waits for 2-year programs. For all that we have a nursing shortage, it’s really hard to become a nurse and everything I hear is it keeps getting worse.
As much as I want there to be more nurses to fill these jobs...I also still want there to be high requirements for programs.

I agree, but my understanding is the lack of available slots are raising the requirements, not that they’re holding out for better students. I know good nurses who graduated at the top of their class who aren’t sure they’d get in to the same program now. Also, waiting 3 years to win the lottery for a 2-year program is not improving the applicant pool any.
I don’t think it’s the exact same issue with residencies and the doctor shortage, but in both cases we have a real and growing shortage and aren’t doing anything to improve the ability to create supply. It’s really puzzling to me.

This is exactly it. It's extremely hard, and you'd think they'd try to make it easier. I know why the restrictions are the way they are, but if we need nurses, let's make it happen.

And even harder to hire nursing instructors. So many program would be open to expanding their numbers, but do not have enough instructors. It is much more lucrative to just work a couple 12 hour shifts a week verse teach at the collegiate level.
A regional professional conference is going forward with an in-person event next month. My regional big boss just asked me if I wanted to go - and I am so very literally of two minds about it....but I think I might be going?
Assuming it happens.
But then also i just went and got tested for just in case after being around waaaaaaaaaay more people than usual last weekend. Travel companion had a scratchy throat. I've had a smidgen of a cough (which I have every time I step outside, so was ignoring, but then she had a sore throat and suddenly I wondered). So after texting each other our symptoms we both dropped what we were doing and spent our lunch breaks getting tested. Rapid test came back negative, PCR results soon hopefully.
I feel like I keep rapidly pingponging back and forth between being pretty blase about delta (I mean...can't go back on lockdown. have a life to live here and more and more people are expecting to see folks in person for work stuff. our numbers aren't terrible locally. I'm vaxxed....) and feeling like we need to be SUPER cautious (testing at the slightest throat tickle, have been masking anytime I'm inside in public, limiting who's running errands, etc)
Hello, twin/neighbor. I'm having the same swings. And I'm actually scheduled to attend a national conference (locally) in October in person, too. I am curious if they will cancel, but if not I will definitely go because getting work to pay for a conference is not a small feat.
I am hoping they will refund me if they go virtual, though. I absolutely will not get much out of sitting in front of a computer all day watching webinars.
Right now I'm on a "I've done everything I could and now I guess I'll just live my life because it's never going to get better and I can't control that" kick, but I'm sure I'll be back to freaking out soon.
Stanford is requiring everyone to get tested weekly, regardless of vaccination status. Seems like that would give people a reason not to get vaccinated?
In a vacuum, maybe, but did you see the news that SF is requiring everyone to be vaccinated to go into many indoor spaces (except shopping)? So all bars, restaurants, gyms and entertainment venues that serve food or drinks. I would not be shocked if Santa Clara County followed suit because they’ve always been one of the stricter counties.

I don’t think it’s that simple. My understanding is that it’s partly about raising the requirements but there’s also been a lot of controversy around expanding the number of seats for protectionist reasons. I’m more familiar with the doctor side of things, but the American Medical Association is a widely hated organization that often seems to care more about keeping salaries high than expanding access to care. Nursing schools similarly turn away qualified candidates because there simply aren’t enough seats in programs.
Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. My one dept (that masked without asking) has been holding in person events with food again. Guess what happened? They had someone test positive that was at one of their events. Luckily the two people that were exposed weren't at the meeting I was in earlier this week.

My covid test came back positive this afternoon. My mom has the same symptoms and will also get tested. DH's was negative. I'm just so angry, that supersedes any physical ailments (though I do have a few). I can't go back to work until Monday the 23rd. I don't have enough PTO to cover all the time, I have a call into HR to see if there's anything that can be done. Stay safe out there everyone!
This would not be a terrible idea if he was also mandating, you know, stuff that has proven effective in reducing the spread of covid in the first place.
Meanwhile in Australia, my friend messaged me earlier to say that his area has their first case in a year and now they're on a 7-day lockdown. Unlike our lockdowns they are actually legit.
I passed my test! Work travel is approaching, and the site requires I provide both vaccination records and proof of negative test (and not a rapid antigen test). Just got my results, and I'm negative! *phew* Work would have been OK with me having to skip the trip, but it would have been darned inconvenient...
Also - it was stupidly easy to get a test. Signed up on the walgreens website, indicated the test I wanted, scheduled a time, drove to the prescription pick up window, and the pharmacist working gave me instructions and passed the items I needed out thru the secure drawer. I swabbed my own nose (not fun, but not horrible), and followed the instructions on how to send it back. Done in minutes, results in about four hours (they say results within 24 hours for this type of test). And, free. I assume my insurance that is already on file with Walgreens may be picking up some of that cost, but I got the distinct impression I wouldn't have had to pay anything even if I wasn't insured.
I have to get a similar test before returning home. Hopefully that is as easy.
A friend of mine just posted “all I got from DMB is this hat, and covid”. Which is a data point as I consider the festival show at the end of the month, that was edging close to a HoCo CEP GTG 😂

Which show? I know a couple people who were at the first few shows and was just waiting for this to happen (and as I typed this I realize one has been silent on social media the last few days...)
[Indiana University vaccine mandate upheld by judge] The university in May required all faculty, students and staff to be vaccinated unless they applied and qualified for an exemption, such as a religious objection or a medical reason for not receiving the vaccine.

what was the vax/testing situation there? (obviously still trying to make up my mind too!)

She didn’t mention that. It was in West Palm Beach, so guessing none, bc DeSatan.
That said, she further clarified that she in the only one of her ground (~10) that has tested positive so far, and she suspects she got it on the plane, not the show.
My understanding is all they have said is solid organ transplant patients and those with “equivalent level of immunocompromise.” But today’s vaccine advisory meeting is expected to have further details of what that means.

I REALLY want a booster but I don't know yet if I'll qualify and if I do, I would feel guilty getting it because so many in the world haven't even been able to get a 1st shot let alone a 3rd.
I'm about 8 months out from active treatment for BC so my immune system should be ok now but my WBC count was very low when I got the vax so I don't really know how much immunity I got from it.

ahhhh! What to do, what to do…
FWIW, I think I would NOT go to a show in Florida right now, especially if I had to go through airports to get to it.
Maybe I'm just believing what I want to believe, but I think an outdoor concert that requires proof of vax or negative test AND is in an area with a high rate of vaccination is about as safe as you're going to get from a COVID perspective. Especially since you don't have to travel to get to it.
I am seeing Train at MICU in the city next week and I'm curious what the experience will be like.
My work just announced that masks are required again starting Monday. Blech. I actually agree with this very much, but I am not looking forward to sitting in a cubicle all day again wearing a mask.

I really, really want to go see them at Wolf Trap next week. But I'm veering hard between "Outdoors! Vaccinated! It'll be fine!" and "OMG, DeLtA! No crowds!!!"
I honestly think outdoor concerts are fine, particularly if they are vaccine/negative test mandated. Just, y'know, don't participate in mosh pits.
Lollapalooza was not a super spreader event. Sure, there were cases that were traced there, but the infection rate per amount of people was low. Especially for as tight as they were packed in together.
