Omfg. I don’t know how to link but I just got a NBC5 news alert about Abbott requesting out of state workers and postponing elective surgeries again. But tell me again how masks aren’t necessary in an elementary school when 95% of the population is too young for the vaccine.

my bff is a or nurse near houston for a major hospital network and she said 10 days ago hospitals in the network were already closing the operating rooms to elective procedures and already moving their staff to the floor to support the influx of covid patients, she is surprised that abbott asked for this.
Pdq - not in Houston but I know we’ve floated procedural area staff and are likely very close to this. Local projections are for us to be above January surge levels before the end of the month. 😭 And I actually worried less about DS last year than I am now.

First day of school is tomorrow for us. So anxious about it, even more so than last year. Our district is now kind of defying DeSatan with a mask mandate but allowing for parents to opt out, with a simple form. Hoping it helps a bit though with mask wearing. Thankfully my DD's teacher is wearing a mask and all but one student at meet teacher had a mask on last week. And her teacher is eating lunch outside with them, to help there be more space in the cafeteria for other classes. She's choosing to give up her break to eat lunch with the class. But especially this year I am so grateful for it!
I keep thinking that if ALL the major TX school districts do it, it'll call his bluff. It would be political suicide to pull funding from every major area. Even if they're mostly blue.
I don’t know. I think Abbott will just quadruple down. He is completely unhinged. It’s like Abbott and DeSantis are having a who can be more of an asshole contest.
Ok I would say 75% were masked at our north Dallas suburbs meet the teacher. Now will all these kids and teachers come with masks daily, I don’t know, but I was pleasantly surprised. You were definitely in the minority if you were unmasked. I feel a smidge better about school starting.

Our school district announced today masks will be required. My only kid left in school is 15 and vaccinated but I’m still so relieved they’re doing the right thing.
We have sneak a peek tomorrow night and the school has said nothing about requiring masks. I am irritated. Fortunately my daughter’s class is in the basement where it is less crowded at these events. She has the same teacher as last year, I will finally meet her in person!
AAP urging FDA to authorize vaccines for 5-11 year olds
Would be great if this could actually happen, but I won’t hold my breath.
I wish they would. I know why it’s taking longer and don’t disagree that their request for more data is ideal but I just don’t think we have time for that. I’d rather take my chances on a vax at this point if the data they have at this stage is good. Ugh.
I had three friends mention that their children have covid yesterday. Two of the kids are young adults, one is 11.
One of the young adults may have a health condition that restricts her from getting the vaccine, and the 11 year old is not yet able to get a shot. The other young adult is from a very pro-vaccine family, so I feel safe in assuming they are vaccinated.
Just felt like a punch in the gut to hear about them all within a few hours. A very noticeable reminder that we still have a long way to go before we are truly past this.

Me too. The people who think their kids were vaccine injured >6 months after they got the vaccine aren't going to believe what the data tells us anyway.
I spoke at the school board meeting last night. I was one of three people (including my husband) asking for a mask mandate. We were heckled, booed, and at one point I was afraid one guy would follow us into the parking lot. If you need any further indication of bat shit crazy it was, Melissa Carone spoke.
I don’t know what to do. How can I send my kid in a mask knowing she’ll be at the mercy of kids who have bullies for parents? How do we keep her home when we both have to work? What a fucking mess.

How nearly, I'd take my chances with an adult dose for my 7 year old if it was a available.
Or even a half dose of whatever CVS has in stock right now.

I'm so sorry. My sister couldn't make it but she's emailing the board in support of a mandate and telling anyone she knows who supports it too to do the same.

My youngest turns ten in a couple weeks. Don’t think I haven’t considered fudging her birthdate.
I won’t. But I won’t say the thought hasn’t occurred to me.

I've been thinking about it for my 11.5 year old. She could easily pass for 12. But I am a rule follower. Idk I might still do it anyway. My concern is mostly with processing through insurance.

That’s awful. I’m so sorry. Does your child have a cohort of mask-wearing friends? I’m not above asking the school to put them together to protect them from bullies.

Not going to lie, given my husband’s risk factors I’ve thought about whether my 8 year old could pass for 12 (I know he couldn’t). Remote learning isn’t an option, so we have no choice to send him into school, but with delta flying around I don’t feel like it’s safe enough at all for H. Like, my older two I feel safe because they’re fully vaccinated and everyone is masked, short of that I don’t feel safe with.
