Honestly, if I were in Texas (or a few other states), I'd probably try it.
Uh yeah. What’s really holding me back is I am in MD and our county is requiring masks for school. If I were in TX or FL? I’d do it.
Yeah we are in IL and have a mask mandate thankfully. Otherwise before the mandate, I was just pretty much like OK I guess my kid is getting Covid since elearning isn’t an option.

While I really understand wanting to do this (I have an 8 yo and a 12 yo, and my 8 yo is as big as my 12 yo), it's a really bad idea. Vaccines aren't administered on the basis of weight like many other drugs are - it's an immune system development thing. And I know the dose they'll probably use for the under 12 set is less than the adult dose (which is what 12 and up get), and I don't think any of the studies have used the adult dose on kids under 12.
Plus you'd probably get caught before it was time for the second dose. And I really don't know if there would be any sort of repercussion for lying about something like this.

These are all the reasons I’m trying to be patient and wait….
Waiting is hard though, and if I have to take drastic measures to save my child’s life then I will. I just don’t think we are at that point of me needing to take drastic measures yet, so I’m back to trying to wait.

Understand all of that. I’m not really advocating anything stupid. I should have said I’d be much more inclined if I lived in those places. I still think the FDA should move things along.

This was a question on the 1A this morning and the caller asked the panel of doctors to discuss medically, not ethically, if it would be dangerous to lie your way into a vaccine for your kid and while all the panelists all said you should wait till your kid's age group is approved, no one actually said it would be medically harmful.
Which makes sense to me. Some vaccines have different adult and pediatric doses. Some don't. Some pediatric doses are stronger than adult doses. The impression I got was just that your kid would likely end up with a higher dosage than they need.
We were noticed mask are optional 🤯🤬 We are private and had everything in place last year, including masking. The public school district we are in (which is the same city as our school) is mandating masks.

I get what you are saying, but I am really not concerned about my 11.5 year old. The risk outweighs the benefits IMO. I am kind of surprised there isn't a more kosher way to do this given that we use drugs off label all the time.

I have a friend who said that her kid's nephrologist (he has fairly severe underlying conditions, but is only 5 with an 8yo sister) offered to allow them to get the shot early. I was like, ?? I don't think that's a thing, but she assured me it is - she's pretty medically savvy, having dealt with his and her own health issues for years, but I'm still not sure about that. She hasn't done it, but is considering it. I wonder if the fact that he already had a mild case of covid is affecting that?
I know my SIL tried to essentially bribe a few doctors to do it for her almost 12yo (who is very large for his age and turns 12 in Oct.) and they said absolutely not because it would cost them their license/practice/something like that (I got this all second hand through MIL).
Anyhow. With a 7yo and a 3yo, I'm hoping for quick approvals for the 2 and up crowd, but I'll take 5 and up at this point. Anything.
Just, like, tell us a date that kids are likely to be eligible. Mid-winter doesn't work. One, that isn't soon enough when the FDA has data already, and two, that is so vague it might as well not be a real time line. If they could come out and say we are anticipating vaccines to be ready for the 5-12 group on September 15th then that might give school districts and governors more will to put in temporary mask orders. I mean maybe not but people like dates and not vagueism. Yes I know it doesn't work that way but if this isn't an emergency then what is?!
Anyways. Bexar County (San Antonio area) has successfully sued Abbott and can at least temporarily issue a mask mandate for schools. Dallas is also suing and Houston will be as well. I'm so curious to see where this goes because AGAIN Abbot said today it's a time for personal responsibility, there will be no mask mandates, and the way out of this is vaccines. OKAY KIDS CAN'T GET THEM ASSHOLE. I hope every city sues and wins.
I read today that several parents are suing DeSantis over this. Most have kids with special needs and compromised immune systems, so their argument is that he’s denying them FAPE. I hope they win.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

Right? Do they even know when Midwinter is? Do they mean December 21st--which is the actual date of Midwinter (do most people even know that Midwinter=Winter Solstice?)--and if they meant that, wouldn't they have said before Christmas or New Years, since most people actually do know when those are? Or do they mean the middle of Winter, like early February? Or do they mean a while after some places start getting snow, like maybe November or early December? Midwinter is actually very specific, but it's so rarely used in our culture, I really couldn't even guess what they are getting at.

We have a midwinter break in February, so I assumed then. But I agree that this would mean different things for different people.
My son starts next week and our district isn't requiring masks. His school had their summer care program shut down last week because of positive kids. I'm so pissed and my mental health is terrible right now.

This would probably be a special use type thing given his other health issues. And it'd very likely be the pediatric dose that's being studied.

My sister's a doc and she didn't say it'd for sure cause problems, but she has said that a kid's immune systems is very different from an adult's. I don't think it'd be risky for an 11.5 year old to get vaccinated now with an adult dose, but I don't know that I'd take my 8 year old.
cap, that is what I was thinking. Like when we move to give babies cows milk and everyone says 12 months old, well does it really matter if they are 11 months and 2 weeks old instead? Probably not. The 11.75 crowd would likely be fine. I wouldn't consider it for younger children (no actual age here, but I agree 8 is too young).

This is exactly the case for my dd too, and I don't think we live in the same area. I actually called my supervisor today and told him I am not ok and will be taking some pto for mental health this week and next week. I have only been billing 1-3 hours per day since they announced and am a wreck today.
Our most convenient testing site for taking the kids to had closed. We’re now a high transmission county again. I hope they re-open another convenient testing site once school opens and that I don’t have to be calling the pediatrician’s office for an order every time I need one done.

Y'all, I have a 10.5 year old, and I literally said it out loud for the first time yesterday to H---"do you think he could pass for 12?"
That said, I am the rule-follower of all rule-followers (enneagram 1 checking in), so I won't actually do it, but Jesus Christ, I'm a nervous wreck about camp and lunch @ school (and I live in an area w/ a high vax rate and a mask mandate in schools--I realize I am really lucky that I don't have a supreme politically-motivated idiot as governor).
I kept my only-child kid home for 18 months--no travel, no restaurant dining, no camps, no in-person school, 3 outdoor masked GTGs with his buddies. He has to go back to school--b/c I have to go back to school (to work).
I wish us all safety and peace for our kids and our decisions.

School doesn't start for us until next week and official class lists post the night before school starts. But they have entered teacher names into the kids' portals. I am really hoping they are correct, because my younger (too young to be vaccinated) kid is with the teacher I was hoping he would get. In addition to being a really experienced teacher, she is a local mom who has been very vocal about why masks in schools and teachers being vaccinated is important. Our district has high vaccination rates amongst teachers and is mandating masks, but I like knowing the teacher stands by that and isn't just going along with what she is told, but may not enforce it much in class.
As of today, there are only 2 pediatric ICU beds available in all of North Texas.
Which is an enormous region and includes both the 9th and 12th largest cities in the US.
TWO.
A lot of schools in this area haven't started yet.
Tell me again how we don't need to worry about kids.
A lot of this is RSV, too. RSV and Covid surging at the same time is just hell.
The only ONLY bright spot here is watching all the cities fight back against Abbott. All these lawsuits are delicious. I want more and for Abbott to go down.
Spring ISD, a smaller (36,000 students & staff) district in the Houston suburbs, is mandating masks now. I taught there for a few years and am surprised at this news, but YESSSS!!! Fuck Abbott.
This whole debate reminds me of a grimmer version of the vax debate in April - is it wrong to misrepresent myself to get vaxxed earlier? I’m not judging in any way;; the risk factor calculations have shifted significantly. My daughter is 8, so I’ll wait for now. Besides the age gap, my only real concern is whether their proof of vaccination would be rejected because the birthdates don’t match up. But then again, that was back before Delta was a thing and my main concern was whether the other Delta would allow my daughter to fly, so….

My district is still maintaining they can’t do this but somehow I think by the time school starts next week masks will be required. I sure hope so. Watching everyone outright defy Abbott is so fun. I'm here for it and want more.
Meet the teacher last night was not at all comforting. Traffic was horrendous yesterday and we only made the last 15min of the allotted time, but very few teachers had on masks and maybe a quarter of families.
I hope more of the smaller, suburban districts like ours will start to mandate, but with school starting this week it feels like a too little, too late.
