I just sent my son off into Abbott’s Petri dish and I am very emotional.
I’m doing my daily walk/run and came across a group of 6 middle school kids waiting for the bus, all masked. I wanted to tell them how proud I was of them but I didn’t want to be a weirdo and I’m not sure I could complete my sentence without crying. Guys, at least right around me, despite what the Facebook comments tell you, the majority appear to want their kids masked. It’s the vocal minority who are trying to gaslight us.
Gov Newsom (CA) is expected to announce today that all school staff and teachers must be vaccinated or do weekly testing. The two major teachers unions/associations support the move.
And you must now also show proof of vaccine or negative test to enter any hospital in CA. So if you are visiting a patient, you have to show proof.
The conservatives in my state are freaking about their freedumbs and recalling Newsom. The Republican polling the highest in the recall election is saying one of the first things he will do is ban mask and vaccine mandates. (Eye roll).

Iowa is in for a shitstorm. School starts in 2 weeks. IDPH has advised schools to treat Covid like the flu...no contact tracing unless it's an outbreak or vulnerable population. No quarantining or isolation for positive cases or exposures. Per Iowa law masks cannot be required by schools and they also cannot inquire about vaccination status. Our kids are 9 & 4, so not old enough to get vaccinated yet. FUCK!!

Reading the IDPH link just makes me depressed. I don’t even know if my 1 voice matters anymore. 🙁 my local representative gives no F. I want to advocate for the kids at the state level, but don’t know where to turn.
Secretly hoping for a job transfer out of state (not going to happen).
I’m speaking at our school board meeting this week to thank the board for requiring masks. The metric is nonsense (100/100,000), but I believe they set it knowing our region would fail spectacularly, and it gives them something to tell the anti maskers. Kemp is awful, but at least he isn’t banning mask mandates. I’m actually pretty sure he legally can’t, but whatever. Points for not even trying. The bar is on the floor here in GA.
I don’t know how Iowa isn’t getting more attention to how terribly we’re screwing this up. We are right on board with Florida and Texas…and in some ways, worse.
I’m really struggling with sending my kids to school in 2 weeks. But we did a year of virtual because we thought we were “doing the right thing.” And now I just feel screwed.
Then I’m starting to think about whether people (including me) with voluntarily quarantine on exposure. That could mean a LOT of missed school days if this spreads like I anticipate it will.
lilac05, I was thinking about you the other day. Reynolds IS just bad as Abbott and DeSantis. I guess the difference is Iowa isn't as bad...yet?
I know you are involved with the school and have good connections with some of the teachers. Do you think your district will fight back? Or your city? I'm continuing to email our superintendent daily about a mask mandate. I don't think she will do it until forced to but I truly think it's coming. This week has really restored my faith in humanity. Watching people fight back against Abbott and actually think about young kids has just made my week.
HISD is one of the largest districts in the country and just ordered a mask mandate.

Our school board meeting on Monday was a shit show at the beginning with anti-maskers once again verbally abusing our board…who in turn can only say “thank you.” The board recommends masks, but is being very careful to not overstep their authority. The official word is that “masks are encouraged” rather than “optional”, but they did not feel they could use the word “recommended.” They did include a blurb about how the AAP and CDC both recommend masks. I cannot imagine a scenario where they’d actually challenge the Governor. There’s hope for Iowa City, though, I think. IC and DSM have been the most progressive and are most likely to challenge the Gov. Iowans in general, I think, are less likely to “fight back.” Our state legislators for our area are sane and generally great…but they’re fighting a losing battle. And our Governor has disabled her email buttons on FB and I cannot find it on her webpage. She doesn’t want to hear it.
Our official return to learn plan *does* include information about quarantines and follows our county’s health department…so I’m not sure who is the ultimate authority there.
We’ve gone from 66 cases a day on July 12th to 635 today…and I’m almost positive that a lot of people simply aren’t testing. Last I checked, our positivity rate was something like 20%.
I highly doubt IC will fight back in Iowa. We all saw what happened to the Des Moines school this last year who tried to defy her wishes. They were punished repeatedly and ended in the superintendent not having his contract renewed. And kids had to learn through lunch to make up for lost instruction time since they didn't count the online time. It sounded absolutely miserable for those kids.
I am in FL. First day of school was yesterday and we sent my 3rd grader with no mask mandate (he is wearing a mask though). Today we got an email that there was a postive COVID case in the school identified. Not a contact of my son... yet... but good lord that didn't take a long. The big school board showdown took place last night and they voted against a mask mandate. I am so disappointed.

I agree. She is vindictive. What she did to DSM schools was absolutely atrocious. She made an example of them, and everyone has learned from that. I think that’s why our district isn’t saying/doing anything, even though I think they’d like to. And I agree with you that it’s unlikely that they’ll do anything, they’re just the only school district that might even possibly think about it. The rest just fall in line.

I know Iowa is bad because I follow this, but FL and TX get the attention because they're much larger states. At least, that's what I'm theorizing. And I don't think IA's governor has POTUS aspirations?
Are many people still hosting large indoor weddings without a guest vaccination requirement? Or am I just getting lucky? They also wanted my son to be the ring bearer. LOL.

Hard pass. Hope our relationship survives.
I thankfully haven't been invited to a large indoor party yet but most weddings I've seen have been outdoors. The only indoor party I know of (my next-door neighbor's daughter's Sweet 16 party) didn't have a vaccination requirement, but most attendees were vaccinated anyway (including the daughter and all of her friends, impressively) and the hall also had a rapid test truck for every single person to take a test before they walked inside, including vaccinated people. The party was in June when cases were really low and no one got sick (I'm sure someone would have called her if they had gotten sick).

yes! I am in the wedding industry. I have a large reception this weekend. I have big events booked 11 out of the next 13 weeks. Labor Day weekend I have 5 events over three days. Several are rescheduled from early 2020. ETA I have not seen any of my events with requirements of any kind - vaccine, testing or otherwise
I guess since we are talking about schools, this discussion should be @
So, on the meeting them where they are thought, I found an interesting rebuttal to the Mt Vernon school board doctor thing. I’m still a bit eh, cause this guy mentioned Dr Prassad, and I have issues with him. There is a good chunk of @ in here. Maybe this whole thing shoulda been in the @ thread, but the original video was in this one…
All 3 parties (all outdoors, small size) we’ve been invited to this summer have had a vaccine requirement. No one is asking for your CDC card, but something like “vaccinated adults only, please” in the group text or email invite.
This is the first major life event we’ve been invited to attend since the vaccine roll out and the bride is thrilled that “everyone who wants a vaccine can get one”
… except for your nephews, but maybe they don’t count?

We just got invited to an indoor wedding with no mention of vaccines or masks. I luckily have an easy out, as we don’t have anyone to watch DD, but my H feels like he has to go because he is the father of the bride’s boss, and he has known the bride her entire life.
Ugh our summer camp just closed because a parent tested positive and attended an indoor party last weekend with multiple summer camp families. They're asking people to get tested. I'm thinking we'll wait until there's a known exposure in our kid's class (where everyone wears masks).
It seems too early to test since we don't even know if there's an exposure in her class. Right? This is our first shutdown and potential exposure during the pandemic, so of course I'm scrambling trying to figure out what steps to take.

My cousin is getting married in October, and her sister is hosting the wedding at her home (she lives on a farm and it's at least partially inside their barn). The host cousin, her husband, and her kids are unvaccinated. I feel bad for my sane cousin because I suspect she would prefer everyone be vaccinated, but her hands are kind of tied since she can't exactly tell the host family that they can't attend...
My family was planning on attending but now we are not. I think my parents are likely still going, but plan to leave before dancing/drinks so will hopefully be able to avoid the bulk of the indoor portion. There is no way my sister would be bringing her kids. ETA: Although they live near Houston and are in school, so really the wedding probably wouldn't be any less dangerous than their daily lives. Which is sad.

My cousin is getting married indoors in a hotel, last weekend of September. No mention of masks or vaccines. They live in a different state from all of their families, so lots of people traveling in. And they have 4 days of indoor events planned all across their city.
We're not going for multiple reasons, dh being high risk being the biggest.

Yikes!!! I was going to say get tested tomorrow or Friday because of the 4-5 day recommendation (unless symptomatic), but there could be a cascade effect here where someone at the party could have infected someone at camp on, say, Monday. What a mess. I might isolate and wait until the weekend to test. Or test today or tomorrow knowing you may need to test again in a few days.

Even though IL has a school mask mandate, I know of at least a couple districts ignoring it and going masks optional. It’ll be interesting to see if anything happens to them regarding funding etc. or not.

That's what I'm thinking, too. We're supposed to hear public health guidance on the next steps today, and if potential exposure was Monday or Tuesday a test wouldn't even pick anything up today.
Complicating things is the fact that the summer camp has two locations and they haven't told us anything about which location has potential exposure (maybe the positive person had kids at both locations?).
No kids have tested positive, the positive person was wearing a mask, and kids are in groups of less than ten with masks at summer camp. I'm really hoping that means it won't spread but we'll just isolate and wait.
