Even though IL has a school mask mandate, I know of at least a couple districts ignoring it and going masks optional. It’ll be interesting to see if anything happens to them regarding funding etc. or not.
Seems Pritzker's administration is firmly in the, "Fuck around and find out," camp, so I will enjoy watching this go down.
My kids are 12 and 14, they are all for mask wearing if it allows them to be in person at school. Maybe some of these adults should talk to the kids.
Whenever I hear parents who are anti-mask talking about how much their kids whine and complain about masks and it's terrible for them I just want to yell "Where do you think they learned that behavior?!"
Because the kids that I know, across many ages/grades, wear their masks. They might grumble for a second, but they realize that we can't do the things they want to do without masks. So they get over it or we go home. And guess what - my kids grumble about a lot of stuff, like pants, showering, brushing their hair, getting out of bed... But they still know they have to do it.

I was just talking to our daycare director because she's been getting pushbacks on masks from some parents. She said it's such a non-issue with the kids she wishes the parents could see how they just go with whatever the other kids are doing.

Exactly! My 5 year old niece and nephew hardly notice when they are wearing a mask, we often have to remind them to take them off!

I'm in a FB group for teachers in my state, and in one town, a group of anti-mask parents are going around putting signs on everyone's doors about how masking children is child abuse, kids don't spread or get affected by the virus, and they need to protest at their school districts. I know this group is going around to different school board meetings causing an absolute scene and supposedly sending all their children to school on day 1 with no masks (we have a school mask mandate).
I just....can't understand what goes on in these people's heads to want to put not only other children but their OWN in danger like this. Also, we did school last year with masks (unless they kept their kids remote, but I kind of doubt it) and they obviously did fine.

RSV plus Covid is a really bad combo. We really need these kid vaccines. Selfishly I have been much more concerned about school age children having access but it sounds like we may need the little kid ones even more.

Son came home from his first day and despite the majority of his class and teachers wearing masks at meet the teacher he says only about 4 kids in his class and no teachers did today.
My response was, “well that’s disappointing.” He said, “Yeah, the teachers should be setting the example for the students.”
I’m feeling disheartened again.
He did have a great day so at least there’s that. I want him to leave the worrying to me.
Update on our summer camp. Public health said no need to quarantine since there were no cases at the school or among faculty. Summer camp will only reopen room by room once faculty test negative. And students need a negative test to come back.
I'm feeling way less freaked out. The positive case was a vaccinated adult wearing a mask, and summer camp says the potential exposure event followed "CDC guidelines," all adults were vaccinated, all kids were masked. At this point, we probably won't get test results soon enough to return this week, but assuming no one in her room tests positive, she can go back next week for the last week of camp.
Also, my kid was a champ for her first COVID test. Giggled the entire time I "wiped her boogers" with the swab and got worried that her younger sister would get jealous that she didn't get a test. Fingers crossed there won't be any cases at summer camp.

Yes! My kids are better about masks than shoes (or even pants in one case). I'm sick of adults "speaking up for the children." Many times, their kids are only fighting masks because they are.

We were invited to a large wedding last summer when cases were really low, but that was a hard pass for us.
I think people without kids don’t know that not everyone can get the vaccine. Small sample size, but I’ve had two instances where I had to tell people my kids are wearing masks because they are too young to get vaccinated. Well and now H and I are wearing them again due to :::waves hands::: all this.
The district I live in, but not the one I work in, had their BOE meeting last night and I didn’t watch the whole thing and apparently missed the screaming about masks and how it causes everything from suicide to rape (?!). Wow. Also the super mentioned that he had received a racist email, so just awful all around. They said they would have the guidelines for fall on Thursday, and I’m assuming masks will be a part of it since we live in NY, but I can’t imagine how ballistic people are going to go. It’s scary.

On the flip side, kudos to your son for recognizing the bolded.
So my county is spending money on an attorney to fight the Governor's reminder of the law passed regarding masks.
I am livid and have emailed all of the BOE reminding them that spending money on an attorney for something that will hopefully be temporary is a stupid use of money considering our schools are overcrowded and not all classes are ADA compliant. I reminded them that when my daughter was temporarily in a wheelchair she was unable to participate in music because the music teacher was on the stage in the cafeteria, which has steps and no other method of getting up there.
I just, cannot. We pay our teachers crap, there's issues galore with supplies and funding, and they want to spend money on an attorney and possibly more money if they end up in court. WHY??

So I learned today that DeSatan's executive order on no mask mandates also considers parents asking teachers if their students can sit by other masked students to be "covid bullying" and it's not allowed. And if a school does it, that student can get a state scholarship to use funds to go to a private school. Because Republicans in this state try to find every possible avenue to continue to squeeze funding from public schools.
By shear luck my DD is seated next to other students who are wearing masks and she says only two students in her class of 20 aren't wearing a mask. But at her (small) elementary school there are already 13 staff/teachers out with COVID (apparently some due to in person planning meetings last week before school started), several neighboring schools have entire classes quarantined as of today and today was day 2 of school starting! Not off to a great start here.

Holy hell, that’s fucking disturbed. It’s like he’s deliberately trying to murder people.
The order also applies to all staff and even volunteers. I wonder if red and purple counties are losing their minds right now (looking at you, Orange County parents.)

Wow - Day 2 and all that?! I mean, seems so much simplistic logistically and with teacher and student liability/safety just to mask.
DeSatan is such an idiot… I hope he/the gov’s office gets sued, but I think there are all sorts of issues to that.

We got an email from DS’ golf camp tonight that a kid in the afternoon session tested positive. DS is in the morning session and all the coaches have been vaccinated. It’s all outside. And, even though masks were optional, DS wears his the whole time except when he drinks water as does his friend who he hangs out with at camp. So I’m thinking he should be fine. Camp can continue, but they have decided to require masks for the last two days to be extra safe even though they are outside. 😩
Another update! Heard from the summer camp that no one in my kid's room is a close contact with a positive case and the teachers all tested negative today. Students can return with a negative test. We ran out and got at-home rapid tests and my kid tested negative, so she can go back to summer camp tomorrow.

ISBE sent a letter to all superintendents today that outlined consequences. It’s my understanding that a private school in Illinois lost its status as a recognized nonpublic school today due to this.
Plus students would not be able to participate in IHSA sports. Like usual, I expect the sports aspect to be the one thing some people will actually listen to.
I didnt watch but Carroll County Md school board met last night and voted to NOT require masks in school. Every county around us is. Apparnelty thr quarentine guidelines are asseninine, but I didnt wantch so Ill have to wait for them to be published before I get really really mad. Theres also no hybrid option this year, no virtual option, and if kids are out because of exposure there will be no live instruction provided. I am so fucking mad. So mad. B (9) will absolutely wear a mask if I ask her to, even if most of her class doesn't.

Wow this surprises me. Maybe Hogan will require masks at a statewide level?
For what it is worth. Arlington is requiring masks and has a virtual option but there is still no live instruction if kids are out due to quarantine UNLESS the entire class is out. I don't think most schools are doing a virtual option for individual students if they have to quarantine because concurrent was so hard one everyone last year.

This part makes me nervous: "A district would have multiple opportunities to remedy the deficiencies that present a health hazard or a danger to students or staff before becoming unrecognized.." Maybe the state HAS to go through a certain process, but all I see is weeks or even months? of the district still not requiring masks and in the meantime, kids (and staff) are at risk. I'm hoping it's not drawn out like that. I feel like some of these districts are trying to call their bluff. It shouldn't take multiple times to remedy anything - it takes one day to institute a mask mandate in school (that should already be there). UGH!
Nearly every district in Michigan seems to be doing “masks optional,“ which is such bullshit and such a copout by the school boards. Our district is at least giving the option of our kids being in a mandated mask classroom with distancing. Which is probably as much as I can ask for
Can you DM which district is doing this? I advocated for that if there was not going to be a complete mandate and was told it's "impossible."

All of this sucks, but shit like this really REALLY pisses me off. So kids have to quarantine because there are zero restrictions, but they're essentially punished for having to quarantine since they can't even learn remotely.

And we thought kids were behind last year.
Okay.
No one has even said here what will happen when kids are out with Covid. Which with no masks and no quarantining for exposure every single one will be by like week 2 at the latest.

That is essentially what happened to DD when she had to quarantine in April last year. Her teacher met with her and the other kids quarantined, but since half the class was still in person, there was no live instruction. She had some assignments to do, but it only took about an hour. very much like distance learning in Spring of 2020. No fault at all of her teacher since they were not set up to do both, but if that continues....yeah.

It’s a giant ask to expect teachers to switch back and forth between hybrid teaching and in person instruction. They requires different planning.
