My cousin and his family are in Texas. He and his oldest son currently have Covid. They sent their other children, who I assume tested negative, to school today. Is that how this works? I thought they should all stay home?
In Texas this is exactly how it works. I mean it wasn't until there was a ton of backlash that some school districts required Covid positive students to stay home. There is no contact tracing. If you find you are a close contact you have the option to stay home but are not required to do so.
It all goes back to funding. Last year there was a hold harmless agreement for attendance. There isn't one this year. Funding is based on daily attendance here.
We are all masked k-12 in my state. There was no transmission in our school last year.
We are allowed to test on days 1,3,5,7 to keep our child in school. I already signed my kids up for surveillance testing anyway.
Unless the delta variant is vastly different give we had no spread in schools they way they did school last year and they are doing it almost the same thing year, I’m not super alarmed by “test to stay” is what they are calling it. This is if exposure was at school and everyone was masked.
We did meet the teacher today. My 3.5 yo preschooler has been home since the beginning of the pandemic so has only worn a mask on the rare occasion we take her inside somewhere and for a small handful of playdates or playground visits.
She figured out within the first hour that if she drinks water she can take her mask off, and proceeded to become very thirsty for the remainder of the events. ::facepalm:: The girl loves a loophole! I feel like we missed our opportunity to build up her mask endurance. Luckily her teacher seems great so hopefully DD will get with the program quickly.

Oh wow. Well I hope they are truly negative and stay that way.
They focused on 6,280 households in which the first person to catch the virus was under 18. Then they looked for secondary cases, or others in the same home who got sick in the two weeks after the first child fell ill.
In most cases, they found, the chain of transmission stopped with the infected child, but in 27.3 percent of households, children passed the virus along to at least one other resident.
Adolescents were most likely to bring the virus into the home: Children from 14 to 17 made up 38 percent of all the index cases. Children who were 3 or younger were the first to get sick in just 12 percent of households — but they were the most likely to spread the virus to others in their homes. The odds of household transmission were roughly 40 percent higher when the infected child was 3 or younger than when they were between 14 and 17.
This is why I plan to BF and pump as long as I can with my 13-month old. I hope my antibodies are still able to give him some protection.
Who knows how long until the <2yrs group will be able to get vaccinated. I never thought I would be BFing AND pumping past a year postpartum, but here we are...
Meet the teacher as this evening. The nurse, librarian, and a few other teachers were wearing a mask but mostly not. About half the kids were. Maybe higher in DD’s classmates. Will be interesting.
I’m a flight attendant. I tested positive Saturday. We have a “Covid team” that handles us. My contact guy today told me they are having to pull people from other departments to help process all of the Covid cases. *I did not contract it at work*
My friend works for the city and at leas 9 in his dept are out now with it.
I don’t understand how obtuse our governor is being.
Our county council passed a mask mandate for elementary and middle schools!! The school board voted to engage legal council regarding a mask mandate (due to the budget proviso from the state) at the same time, so I anticipate the district following the county mandate when school starts Wednesday.
Went to meet the teacher and I’d say 85-90% of people were wearing masks which was encouraging. 3rd grade teacher was wearing one, kindergarten teacher was not :/. Hope she’s vaccinated.

My DH’s coworker, who also has babysat for many date nights, has covid. We told her long ago we couldn’t use her until she got vaccinated. She’s antivax, and has been pretty reckless from the start so I’m surprised it took this long for her to catch it. I suspect she will rely on antibodies for a while before getting the shot unless it becomes mandated for teachers (right now it’s either get vaccinated or get tested weekly). I do think there is some post-infection immunity so I’m debating whether we should use her again if available, but I’m not sure how long I’d be comfortable with this, if at all.
And now that we know third shots will be recommended for almost all vaccinated Americans, do I only socialize or hire babysitters with all three shots or should I feel okay with two, or the one J&J shot (which several family members got)? Ugh.
So boosters for adults starting as early as next month but still not one word about vaccines for kids?!? This is starting to make me beyond mad. I know there are people working on it (allegedly) and it shouldn't be rushed but surely there is something to share? Bueller? Anyone?

Gah.
I'm frustrated by the lack of vaccines for kids but these are two separate issues and one being addressed has nothing to do with the other.
If we don't make sure that the first people who received vaccines (mostly medical staff) are still protected--and soon--we're screwed.
Most Americans support mandating masks in schools, and vaccinations to return to the workplace — and oppose state bans on either, managing editor Margaret Talev writes from the Axios/Ipsos Coronavirus Index.
But Republicans go against that grain so disproportionately that it helps explain the defiant postures of many red-state governors. 57% of Republicans support state prohibitions against local mask mandates, like those in Florida and Texas, compared to 16% of Democrats.

I fully support boosters for high risk individuals. Medical staff is absolutely included there. If boosters are really going to be needed for all of us then I am happy the US is being proactive but yes I am really struggling that we are doing this and kids still can't be protected.

I wonder if anybody is working on supply & demand calculations for when they open up the vaccines for kids under 12. Do we yet know if they think it will be the same as an "adult" dose & the whole US population will be sharing the same supply? Or will kids have a lower dosage & I assume the vaccine companies are going to generate large quantities of those for the kids?
If it's the same as an adult, I wonder if all the kids will get their shots before the majority of adults are timed to go in for their booster shots.....

I’m right there with you. We can’t even mandate school masking nationally, but sure I’ll get a 3rd shot where the second one gave me a headache so bad I legitimately thought I was having a brain aneurysm or something.
neverfstop, I believe the dose for kids 5-11 will be the 1/3 of the dose for adults. Smaller than that for kids under 5. From my understanding they have enough data to justify an EUA for kids 5-11 but for whatever reason it's just not happening.
mskitkat, yep. Most of my feelings boil to anger at these southern governors for being absolute assholes. Like this is all well and dandy but since DD will be going to the 2019 version of school none of it matters. We are all getting Covid.
Okay I lied, I had to be pulled back into worrying. But not even about safety, just the impossible logistics all over again.
Our quarantine policies are update. Now you must quarantine if you are a close contact and both of you were not wearing masks. So basically my kids will be missing school all the fucking time. How are we going to do this again? I have no idea. Also they give no credit to vaccinations in policies which really makes me mad. It doesn’t matter that my kid is vaccinated. He will still miss school. How in the world are we going to convince people to vaccinate when it means absolutely nothing according to these policies. It drives me insane how the narrative has shifted as if it is August 2020.
also our board decided 5 days before start to demand our before after school programs reduce by 50%. This policy has me seeing absolute seeing red. Sports can go on no problem. But basp programs? Nah we are going fo undercut working families AGAIN. I fucking hate rules that just undercut instead of help. We all have consented to risk. Mostly because we don’t have a choice. No one asked for this.
Update- Got an email from our superintendent. There was some misinformation and confusion floating around. This further exemplifies that I need to leave our discuss our school district board. It is really not good for my mental health even if most people are well intended.

Some of the schools are reducing before/after school capacity and it just means that large groups are rotating having a dozen kids in their home, likely taking off masks and being poorly supervised. So you might be reducing their risk in after school, but you're increasing overall risk.
My DS' new school district (he'll be in kinder this year) finally officially stated that everyone must wear masks regardless of vaccination status. I'm so relieved! The website says in accordance with WA state regulations... not because there's a very contagious virus spreading throughout our city/state/country/the world. I live in a super red city in a blue state. Thank you Gov Inslee!
We have had 4 days in school TOTAL since April 2020. We were hoping to go back at least part time in sept but the country is going through a major spike.
I want the kids back no matter what basically. Online learning is failing sooo many kids here. And the country as a whole is very strict about masks and distancing. Additionally, all classrooms here are designed with open windows and fans - there is no AC in the vast majority of schools so the kids are fairly safe in school IMO.
;How in the world are we going to convince people to vaccinate when it means absolutely nothing according to these policies. It drives me insane how the narrative has shifted as if it is August 2020.
But it does mean something. You keep driving home that with lower vaccine uptake, there will be more community cases that seep into the schools causing more disruption/quarantines and loss of learning. You back this up with data from areas with low and high vaccination and you push parents to get vaccinated and to vaccinate age eligible kids.
The narrative isn’t exactly August 2020, but it’s also not April 2021. Delta changed the game.

I fear that works for people like you and I who have always trusted the science.
I am very scared we are losing ground on convincing the public that they need to get vaccinated. It is one of my biggest fears. And with no practical carrots to point at like differences in quarantine policies, it becomes even harder to convince a skeptical family to vaccinate their kid.
Also at work my quarantine policy is different than an unvaccinated employee. I would like to see the same thing reflected in our schools mostly because it is a practical way to demonstrate in your day to day life how things are different when you are vaccinated. How they are more "normal."

Just read this on Twitter. We need child vaccinations now!
"Australia’s low (except NSW) Covid numbers still allow effective contact tracing. Here we hear of likely child-to-child transmission in a playground, and walking together outdoors. Delta is a beast"
"Today’s COVID aerosol transmission between children update - lessons from Victorian TTI: - rapid child to child seen all the way through - likely outdoor playground transmission - shared outdoor walk home from school"

I told myself I would remain calm as long as outdoors is safe and this might put me over the edge (even though it is not definitive, I know). Fuck everything.
ETA: I don't know if Sky News is like Fox News or anything but given that it's corroborating the video from the press conference above I'll assume it's not sharing a bunch of lies.

The outdoor transmission information makes me a bit nervous, but glad DS and his friends are really good about wearing masks outdoors. Yesterday was the first day at the after school program and DS said outdoors it was optional, but he and his friends just wore them except when they ate. Vaccines for kids can't come soon enough!

Thanks for that. I had no idea the video was that long. I got it from this Twitter post which only had a 1:01 snippet of the press conference:

Our district in Florida has made the national news, over 5000 students in quarantine or isolation and hundreds of staff as well. Our school board has called an emergency meeting for tomorrow. This is all such a mess. The district policy is that if both students are wearing masks, no quarantine but teachers are being told they can't monitor who is or isn't wearing a mask. Masks are currently mandated with an opt out form parents can fill out but that information isn't even being shared with teachers, all because of our Governor.
