The WA gov just announced vaccination will be a job requirement for all education staff in WA as of Oct 18. Hopefully this helps our kids stay in school this year. My school district doesn’t have a contingency plan :/
Also, indoor masks for unvaccinated and vaccinated people will be required again starting Monday.
The comments are pretty 50/50 on our district's facebook page about the implementation of a mask mandate by our county health department that our district is following. The outage is just insane to me. I truly do not understand. Thank God masks are required now though.
I really need an update on this vaccine authorization.
Our district in Florida has made the national news, over 5000 students in quarantine or isolation and hundreds of staff as well. Our school board has called an emergency meeting for tomorrow. This is all such a mess. The district policy is that if both students are wearing masks, no quarantine but teachers are being told they can't monitor who is or isn't wearing a mask. Masks are currently mandated with an opt out form parents can fill out but that information isn't even being shared with teachers, all because of our Governor.
I saw the number jumped to 8,400 students and 307 staff members either in isolation because of a positive test or in quarantine after coming into close contact with someone who tested positive!
Yes, the number keeps increasing! The school board voted for a 30 day mask mandate today with only a medical out opt (by a doctor). Hopefully that helps with those numbers over the next month.
Ugh we just got notice of a positive case in the school-aged section of our daycare. They don’t commingle with the preschool, so no risk of exposure. But we live in a highly mask compliant city with a 90% vaccination rate of the eligible population. Schools just started last week. It not going to go well for the < 12 group 😭
noodleoo , my goodness I would love the test and stay model.
Our kids have to quarantine for 10 days regardless of vax status. It sucked last year and it is going fo suck even more this year. So much lost learning and scrambling to provide care for parents.
That is frustrating. As of now our vaccinated students/teachers don't need to quarantine and if you aren't vaccinated you can return on day 8 (with negative test after day 5).
I think the test to stay is interesting. Our school started an opt in asymptomatic testing program so IMO it seems that we could do test to stay since we already have the "infrastructure"
Well, shit. I heard back from our awesome school board member. She’s passing it along to the Superintendent, but it sounds like their hands are tied.
All quarantines in our district will be voluntary, unless a student (or teacher) tests positive. If someone in a home tested positive, no one else in the home needs to quarantine. It’s up to each individual to “do the right thing.” They’re not even able to notify close contacts. This is absolute INSANITY!
So, if I continue to “do the right thing”, my kids will never be in school as the spread will likely be out of control.
Pretty much the same in our very large district. I'm really discouraged that there won't be any contact tracing or additional mitigation. Last year classes couldn't comingle within their grade level, that's not the case this year.
I'm not feeling good going into next week & the first day of school. At this point I don't even know who to reach out to - which is really sad.
I just went to K orientation for DD1 and the principal said that the RI dept of Ed has stated that will only approve district plans that require masks so thankfully we will have a mask mandate for her school. She said the school committee meeting tonight will flush out details and more info will be sent before the start of the school year (Sept 9).
3/4 kid at my daughter's meet the teacher group at preschool were masked. I hope more kids mask this year than last year. Health department only requires them if there is an exposure.

My kids were signed up for a camp the last week of summer since H goes back to work. I decided to cancel it because they are not requiring masks. Thankfully I get a full refund. I was really stressing about it and it was keeping me up at night. I know they go back to school soon, but this was a totally different group of kids, mostly indoors. And I have a hunch they would have bene the only kids wearing masks. When I signed up in May, I was hopeful. Little did we know...

I just went to our Kinder meet the teacher & felt like I probably go COVID. 90% of the kids, teachers, and parents were unmasked.. H's best friend just texted him that he has COVID (he's vaxed) and I feel pretty defeated now....I'm sure we will all get it.

My antivax coworker tested positive for Covid today. Late 50s with underlying health conditions. I’m concerned this is not going to go well for him. He told me yesterday afternoon that he thought he had Covid. His wife is a teacher and went to school this morning despite the fact that he had a 9am appointment to get tested. I’m almost certain she didn’t wear a mask. But personal responsibility, right Abbott?

Day two of the school year and both kids are home with cold symptoms already. I got a call from my first grader’s teacher yesterday that he was coughing a little after lunch. It wasn’t enough to send him home but by evening both kids had full blown colds so we spent our morning getting Covid tests. Their pediatrician won’t do tests for kids that haven’t had known exposure or any serious respiratory symptoms. It is so annoying that there isn’t a testing system set up in my area specifically for school age kids being kept out of school.
Anyway, we now have an established tradition of visiting our “regular” local testing site followed by a trip to the nearby donut shop. If that’s not freaking depressing…

According to our district’s guidelines, the teacher did nothing wrong.
I, of course, have another opinion.
I wonder how many people will attempt lawsuits when children get Covid in schools. I’m not typically one to think that way, but if one of my children were to get seriously ill from Covid because the state is failing to provide a safe educational environment, I guarantee I’d be researching whether I had a leg to stand on.

Oh yes same here. There are no rules saying she should stay home because here in Texas we have personal responsibility and can make the choice to do what is best for her family. Like exposing an entire classroom of maskless kids to Covid.
I 100% would do the same. If my masked son gets a severe case of Covid from school I will do everything I can to make all of these fuckers pay.

Oh in our district exposed children are being told go to school anyways. There will only be an excused absence if you actually have Covid. Current situation with a friend. Friend has Covid. Whole family has been exposed. School told them they expect their kids to attend school unless they develop symptoms or test positive. I think they WANT this to rip through. I am furious about it.
The mayor of Columbia, SC issued an emergency mask mandate for schools a couple of weeks ago, bc the state legislature added a proviso to the budget that said school districts can’t mandate masks. Today, the SC attorney general sued the city over the mandate.
So glad they are spending the time and money on this. Meanwhile even pediatric ICUs are filling up. It’s all so infuriating.

We were notified earlier, and it’s now public that Connecticut will mandate vaccination as a condition of employment for all school personnel, including any volunteers. Medical and religious exemptions will require weekly testing and proof.

I am very grateful for where I live. Elementary back to school night. Mask mandates not allowed thanks to state law. 98% of families just show up with masks. Teachers all in masks. ❤️❤️❤️
Also my son only has 20 kids in his class. I am feeling a tad more optimistic.
I saw the Texas Supreme Court states that mask mandates are allowed.
Not quite. They dismissed the case on a technicality. Abbott and Paxton didn't file their lawsuit in the right place (Idiots, LOL) but they did say the mask mandates can stay in place while this plays out in court.
Last night was interesting. TEA also said schools have to contract trace (but exposed kids can stay at school). Things ARE changing.
I am really so proud of every leader and school district here that has fought back against Abbott. It's making a difference. Our district was not one of them and still won't say a peep about Covid but if our leaders aren't giving up neither am I. I'll write another letter today.
