I saw the Texas Supreme Court states that mask mandates are allowed.
Not quite. They dismissed the case on a technicality. Abbott and Paxton didn't file their lawsuit in the right place (Idiots, LOL) but they did say the mask mandates can stay in place while this plays out in court.
Last night was interesting. TEA also said schools have to contract trace (but exposed kids can stay at school). Things ARE changing.
I am really so proud of every leader and school district here that has fought back against Abbott. It's making a difference. Our district was not one of them and still won't say a peep about Covid but if our leaders aren't giving up neither am I. I'll write another letter today.
Well, at least this gives more time at least, for the districts that did mandates.
chilerellanos, yes exactly. I'm still considering it a win. I hope to hear more from our district day. The last thing they said was there were conflicting orders in the county vs state and blah blah blah deflect deflect. They don't have that excuse anymore.
This makes me laugh because so many people in my area think NJ is soooooo much better than our awful liberal politicians in NY and somehow expected NJ not to do the same things. Like, how do you believe that NJ is some conservative place? lol
Apparently some jackass yelled at daycare staff yesterday because they didn't want to wear a mask to drop off their kids, and they're pissed they still can't go back to the classrooms. WTF is even happening. I literally don't understand why they're so upset about having to wear a mask for 5 min.
Fairfax County Public Schools just announced staff vaccination requirements: To strengthen these layered prevention strategies even further, this fall, FCPS will be requiring all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or submit routine negative COVID-19 tests. The requirement will go into effect in October, with additional details being rolled out in the coming weeks.
OMG why am I having such difficulty finding kids masks? I have plenty for DD but having a harder time with DS. I thought I could pick up some from Old Navy, but they had zero kids masks at our local store. WTF?!? They used have a whole huge display of them. I'm seriously pissed.
I guess I'll go back to the etsy store that we ordered DD from. I tried Amazon but there are so many options and I have no idea if they fit.

Any other places I should look?
Nobody seems to have anticipated that so many kids would need masks this fall. I was lucky enough to get in initial orders for a few masks from a couple places to test the fit (intending to order more of whatever we liked best), only to have everywhere sell out before I recieved what I thought would be our sample masks.
Last I checked, Old Navy still had some limited stock online, but that may no longer be true. I've been following Happy Masks' social media page for restocking info (they sell out within 1-2 minutes, so you have to know when they will drop to have a chance). It's insane. How is there still a shortage? But I guess a lot of people though the pandemic was over and/or our elementary-aged kids would be getting vaccinated by now.

Just another plug for speaking out in favor of masks, at BOE meetings and online. I know it gets exhausting, but it's SO important for the more reasonable, quiet people to hear that there are many parents in favor of mask mandates.
I spoke at my local BOE meeting last night, and there were about 4ish comments against masks and about 4-5 in favor of masks. I'm in one of the most red, pro-Trump, heavily unvaccinated parts of NJ, and the parent groups have been enraged over Murphy's school mask mandate. They're asking BOEs to submit personal objections to the mask mandate (and Murphy is, I'm sure, thinking about reelection), so even in the more reasonable states, we can't just leave it up to those in charge.
The anti-maskers are really relying on that Tucker Carlson, child abuse/facial distortion/robotic emotions angle.

If anyone has trouble getting masks PM me, I'm not selling but I'll make sure anyone here who needs them has a couple extra. I'm doing them in quilting cotton with muslin, and I'll go up to 3 layers of muslin if you want (for 4 total layers), though I'd reccomend only 2 layers of muslin for kiddos (3 total layers). Bonus points if you dont care about patterns (but let me know ages/colors/likes/dislikes).
I think there was a run on kids masks with school starting. I picked some up on clearance at Kohl’s in July in anticipation and when I looked online the other day to maybe grab a couple more they were all out. I’m guessing a lot of stores didn’t plan on re-stocking.

I think this is the case, about restocking. I got 5 packs at Old Navy for dd1 in mid July for $1 each but had to go to two stores because the first one didn't have any. And I got a few packs for dd2 for half price at Target at the same time. Until about last week all the schools were saying mask optional and now at least half are required.

I wonder if that was our board meeting the other night. It was completely awful.

My district in NE Ohio mandated masks last night. I am happy but feel sorry for the board members who are now targets. I've heard protests are planned outside their homes, some of their children are being harassed at school. This is a complete mess.

I don't think we're in the same county, but feel free to PM me. We have a group for progressive parents and they share a ton of the anti-masker group's plans--this is a wide range collaborative approach. One of the speakers listed a bunch of local districts where BOEs are supposedly writing to Murphy to push him to make masks optional.
I posted on ML but I have several friends that were in the Baylor College of Medicine Pediatric Grand Rounds today. Baylor has several trials going on for kids right now for covid vaccines. They already have covid vaccine clinics for under 12s scheduled beginning in early October at area school districts (Houston area), in anticipation of the vaccine being authorized. It seems so far away but it is in sight!

My older son’s high school just announced that all student athletes, which includes band and cheer, must either provide proof of being fully vaccinated or be tested weekly. At our school, that covers more than half the student body. Definitely a step in the right direction.

Do you have a big lots in your area? They had lots a few weeks ago and were only $1, clearance. They were near the toothpaste, soaps , etc. they fit my 1st grader great. I’d say they for ages 5-8.

Our pediatricians Facebook page has a nice little post saying, basically "masks are important and we will not write anyone an exemption from school masking requirements. Also BTW having asthma isn't a reason not to wear a mask, you can breathe just fine in a mask."

I learned more about the vaccine or be tested weekly requirement at school for student athletes. It appears that cases that come in to the schools (not just ours) through Athletics often come from travel ball. Families travel to a neighboring state for tournaments. Neighboring state has no mask requirements. Someone in team gets Covid. Then they bring it to school. Our county still does contact tracing at schools and that’s what they found. Four football programs in our county cancelled their opening games because of Covid this week. I think this is our school’s attempt at limiting the spread. At least they are trying!

My antivax coworker tested positive for Covid today. Late 50s with underlying health conditions. I’m concerned this is not going to go well for him. He told me yesterday afternoon that he thought he had Covid. His wife is a teacher and went to school this morning despite the fact that he had a 9am appointment to get tested. I’m almost certain she didn’t wear a mask. But personal responsibility, right Abbott?
According to our district’s guidelines, the teacher did nothing wrong.
I, of course, have another opinion.
I wonder how many people will attempt lawsuits when children get Covid in schools. I’m not typically one to think that way, but if one of my children were to get seriously ill from Covid because the state is failing to provide a safe educational environment, I guarantee I’d be researching whether I had a leg to stand on.
I've had this same thought. I'm not a litigious person by nature, but our district chose not to implement a mask mandate (thankfully the county health department instituted one), but I was honestly pondering to myself if I could successfully sue the district for knowingly putting my child at risk of serious illness due to their failure to implement reasonable measures to prevent it.
