My hometown in MA uses ShotSpotter. I never looked into it to fully understand. I didn’t realize there are people reviewing the sounds before police. I also never thought about how it could possibly misinterpret other loud noises as gunfire.
I've heard of this and the fallibility of the system. It goes hand in hand with facial recognition technology and how government entities are allowing it to identify people without acknowledging that the technology struggles with faces of people of color.
I haven't heard of this particular use of AI, but all AI is fallible and susceptible to bias because it only learns from what it's given and if what it's given is biased then it just feeds into that and it becomes a cycle.
