Stay safe everyone! It appears it will impact Eastern Long Island too, and parts of Atlantic Canada. I'm not necessarily expecting to be unscathed in NYC though, it's close enough that we'll probably see some impacts too. Of course, Saturday is the day I'm heading out to Suffolk County on Long Island to see family I haven't seen in, like, 2 years for an outdoor gathering no less, but it seems like there shouldn't be significant impacts Saturday up here.
Last year our vacation in CT got ruined because of a hurricane and resulting power (and water) outage. I text MH earlier to say that the weather gods must think we're going back up this weekend. We're actually going on the 29th and he joked that the power could still be out then. At least this time we won't be under quarantine so we can get supplies if it happens!
Yup, just got the notifications... Going to make sure we have enough gas for our generator and get things buttoned up in the yard. I'm guessing we will be out of power for a few days if it hits us, we are surrounded by trees and it will be a big mess.

Wow, because 2020 was such a shitshow I completely forgot about Isaias!
I forget how to prepare for a hurricane, it’s been so long! We have battery powered lanterns and candles. We have a gas stove and grill so we can cook a little. Luckily H just filled up the propane. But we haven’t had a serious power outrage since having kids. Any advice for preparations? We’re in eastern MA.

We're supposed to spend Sunday in Suffolk with my ILs

You'll need water, both drinking and for flushing.

When we are concerned about water we fill up the bathtub. Hurricane Sandy is where we learned our bathtub had a slow leak 🤣😫
Yep, rain all day here in my part of Virginia. We're heading to the beach for the weekend, but they're already saying it might be red flags due to waves and rip currents as the hurricane goes up the coast.

I am planning on digging out the flashlights to make sure they all work and Saturday MH will put away the lawn furniture and his golf stuff. I had to place an online pick up for tonight so I added water to my very limited order. 10 years ago right before Irene I did my normally weekly food shopping and we were without power for 6 days.
I feel like this hurricane snuck up on me. I Mean it is not hitting us but we have been getting pouring rain all day.
Are you sure the rain isn’t from one of the other hurricanes? Idk where you live but we are getting rain I think from Fred or Grace right now.
Fred moved through the DC area Tuesday. Today’s soaker is outer bands of Henri (pretty sure). Grace is in the Yucatán. Henri is still centered off (literally checks map) South Carolina/Georgia 😳😳
edit… I don’t know where today’s 2” of rain in the DC/Balt area is. It seems too far off to be this heavy from Henri, but isn’t Fred or Grace. I will also say it doesn’t have that oppressive tropical “feel” that we get with tropical storms. Tuesday, it felt tropical even when it wasn’t raining. Just a steamy humidity.
All I wanted while DH is away for work was no big storms that could knock the power out for days. So of course there’s a hurricane coming right at us.
I’m such a weenie when it comes to big weather. I need another adult here to do the adult things and calm my nerves. My neighbor is on call to help with our generator if need be but it would be really helpful if this changed and storm impact isn’t as bad as I’m thinking. 😭
We had a bad storm (not a hurricane) in New Jersey last August and our power was out for a few days. It was really hot and a total drag not to have air conditioning - and because of COVID we didn’t feel comfortable going to a hotel either. Afterward I ordered a bunch more flashlights/lanterns and some battery-powered fans in case it happens again.

We're on Nantucket but are leaving tomorrow. My parents will be here for it though. Their house is about 3/4 mile from the beach and solidly built so they should be fine but they may lose power, etc. They've been here for Nor'easters before but never a hurricane.
I was not paying close enough attention to this. We are supposed to head down to our cottage on Cape Cod, literally perched above the ocean, in an hour or so. I guess we should probably spend tomorrow at home battening down the hatches since we're on the coast here too, but then we won't be able to get everything secured at the Cape. Ugh.
Our neighborhood is closing off most of our roads tomorrow night so I’m out stocking up now on necessities and will spend tomorrow bringing in everything and doing sandbags on the basement entry. It’s our first storm in our new house and we are very close to the beach but I think we should be ok? We don’t have any large trees in our yard which is good.
I wish you all could send your rain over here to the PNW/California. With all the fires we could sure use it.
Right? I’m sitting on my deck watching fire flares not a mile from my house and it hasn’t rained of significance in months. If only we could even out a bit across the continent.
I’m majoring stressing because we closed on our new house but don’t close on our old house for a couple more weeks, so I’m on the hook for potential damage at both properties. Our current basement floods, but it is managed by a sump pump. If we lose power we’re seriously fucked.
I keep refreshing to see if we know more of the path.
Me too! I’m surprised it was still a wide range until recently. But it appears more likely now that Suffolk County will get the direct hit. But we are all going to feel something.
