What have you read this week? Any ratings/reviews/recommendations?
QOTW: What is your least favorite genre of books? (You can be as specific as you want - some examples: fiction, romance, paranormal-romance, heterosexual-reverse-harem-paranormal-romance etc.)
I read Somebody's Daughter by Ashley C. Ford and it's definitely one of the best books I've read this year.
I've had a hard time getting into anything else. I started and stopped We Were Never Here (really slow). Then I started The Other Passenger, another thriller by another author I normally like and I'm not hooked. I might just move on to Ace of Spades which I've heard really good things about.
QOTW: I generally read what I want but I have to go outside my comfort zone to read romance. Sometimes it works out fine - I was ok with Beach Read and really liked People We Meet on Vacation but for the most part I don't get much out of it.
I finished two books this week that felt like total opposites.
The Searcher by Tana French was well written but never real held my attention. I almost quit but was glad I powered through by the end. In Five Years by Rebecca Serle was hard to put down but I'm not sure that it was actually good. The characters were very flat.
Now I am reading The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix and loving it. It's very much up my alley since I adored all the Nightmare on Elm Street, etc. movies growing up.
QOTW: My least favorite is romance. I don't like predictable books and think most romance novels fall into that category. I might make an exception for the below though!
I’m reading Songs in Ursa Major by Emma Brodie. It’s pretty good? I’m not sure about it but I’m enjoying it enough to keep reading.
QOTW: I don’t like self help or inspirational nonfiction. I can’t think of the name right now but that one blogger who wrote a book that is supposed to be so empowering and amazing — not my thing. ETA Glennon Doyle. I’ve heard her writing is great, just not for me.
I'm reading the Invisible Life of Addie Larue and enjoying it so far.
I was listening to the Dark Tower but one of the spider scenes that I had managed to put out of my head when I read the book years ago was so disturbing that I put it down. So now I am listening to Robert Jordan's Crossroads of Twilight.
QOTW: I read most genres but nonfiction can be hit or miss for me. I also have reduced tolerance for science fiction that can't be bothered to have 3 dimensional female characters.
I read Forever Wild. It was a quick little novella. I love the series.
QOTW: great question. I just recently started liking science fiction. I still struggle with historical fiction books. I’ve read some great books in the genre but it’s the one I’m less likely to pick up. Someone mentioned self help/inspirational books and I don’t read those at all. Not my jam.
I have so many books in the works right now, I need to wrap.it.up!
Reading: Hail Mary by Andy Weir The Book of Lost Friends by Lisa Wingate A Single Swallow by Ling Zhang
Audio: The Most Fun we Ever Had by Claire Lombardo
QOTW: Can’t say I’ve tried paranormal romance other than the Discovery of Witches series, which I liked ok. Otherwise I’d say paranormal romance. I think though, after struggling with the last one, I’m done with collections of short stories or essays. It’s just not a format of book I like, at all.
After skimming the August Book thread on ML, I read In Five Years by Rebecca Serle. I probably will not remember it in a week, but I tore through it (always a plus) and last night my long married ass pleasantly dreamt I went on dates with three different men. 🤷🏻♀️🤣
QOTW: I don’t generally like books that aren’t realistic. If there’s an element of fantasy, supernatural, really graphic horror, or time travel, I have a tough time suspending belief.
