Yes, this is definitely their most diverse offering, though. The older packs were much smaller, and under a different name/s.
ETA: "Multicultural". This set is so much better!
When I used to teach K between 2000 and 2010 they definitely had a crayon set I bought each year with multiple skin tones. I really liked a line of paint they had as well that had a variety of skin tones. We used it to make our self portraits in the beginning of each year. Sometime between 2000 and 2010 they stopped making the paint which was a huge bummer for me as I then had to mix the paint all up myself and it was tricky to get the right shades. I hope they restart that as well!!

I know I've purchased the markers and colored pencils over the years, but I don't remember paint- not that I'd have been brave enough to tackle that with my two half hours with the kids. We did chalk once. Once. LOL

Ha! I taught full day so had more time to make a mess. We read a book (the colors of us by Karen Katz) and then picked out colors and names for them and then made self portraits. Was so fun!

@@ DD1 did a project like this in K last year. I’m guessing the teacher mixed the paint herself. I really loved that they had this as part of the curriculum!
I always buy these (they've had them for years and years, FWIW) when I volunteer in our preschools. The kids absolutely adore them, and once they figure out what the labels mean (I dump all my crayons into bins for clean-up ease), they take them all out, line them all up, and pick the ones that "match" them/their family/me/sometimes even their pets (LOL). This is what kids do- I'd say Crayola nailed this packaging, and if they still have these boxes when I buy them again, I will definitely try to keep them in it (at least at first)!

I could swear their basic 8 pack of these has been around for over 20 years. Maybe even since I was in elementary school. Born in 83 and I feel like I owned them? They have been stocked at places with expansive Crayola displays, like Staples and Michael's. I think the larger boxes with more colors is what's new.
I'm always surprised when people post as if skin tone crayons are a new thing. (Not pointed at you.)
Not sure any of our local Walmarts have ever had them.

I’m like 3 years older and I remember intensely studying the Crayola displays at our local K-mart and we didn’t have them in the 80s or 90s. Twenty years ago is possible since that would be after 2000 and I wasn’t buying crayons then.
On another note, is Kmart now mainly a rural chain? I grew up with Kmart but haven't seen one on years. The last time was 9 years ago in Guam of all places. Did they shutter most of their stores and go mostly online?

I spent my weekend at the IL's and thus fell down many internet rabbit holes. One of them was that Sears was failing and bought K-mart at some point and then they both really failed. Apparently there are still a few around, one not too far from me in NJ.

My town (Newark NJ general area) had a Kmart up until late 2019-early 2020.
I liked having it nearby for certain items, but I learned to avoid it if I could simply because the checkout line always took forever.
I need to get a pack!!! Both my kids and their friends always use the brown crayons in regular packsnto colour faces and hands. I love looking at their friends' princess coloring books full of brown faces!!
We have that crayon pack and I think it's awesome. As soon as we got them, BB drew a family portrait of us - all with the right skin tone. It meant a lot to me that she has a box of crayons that is inclusive for our entire family. And that she never has to think about the fact that there isn't a right shade for her.
Off to order a few packs for C and for his classroom. Thinking back on my childhood starting school in the mid-80s, it’s fucked up that we were taught that “the peach crayon is for skin.”
@@ These were on the required supply list for my second grader this year. I wish they were when my older son was in elementary. He’s half Filipino and would use some combo of brown and yellow to try and match his skin tone sometimes. He’d say he tried to match his arm color.

If you see the link I posted above it discusses the history. The original pack of crayons was not specially designed skin tone crayons, they just collected the 8 brownish crayons from their already existing crayons and packaged them together.
This post reminds me that when DS was in kindergarten, his teacher had a few packages of multicultural construction paper. They used it at the start of the year when they made cutouts of themselves for the bulletin board, etc.
It looks like a few brands carry it. Remember the days of classrooms only having access to stacks of manila paper for such projects?

There is still one near me. We went there randomly for something a couple years ago and it was like stepping back in time. I swear nothing in that store has changed since 1991.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
This strikes me as actually offensive given the way different skin tones have been categorized throughout history. I think it’s probably for the better that you weren’t put in charge of this particular box layout. The current layout seems fine to me.
Ok. I honestly didn't know that. I knew of the historical perception of lighter as better, but not about certain tones being better. I apologize for being both ignorant and offensive.
I was wrong, and i let my ego get the better of me.
I remember the first time I saw these in the store and I was like “finally!” I’m actually not sure if we own these, I need to pick up a box next time I’m out shopping for school supplies.
I literally cried when I saw these for the first time. White people have no idea how important and meaningful this is to POC.
