Last week LA County officials said they thought they were seeing a plateau in hospitalizations. We have now seen drops in hospitalizations for the last three days. I hope this is actually happen and isn’t a fluke. We are back to universal masking, including at larger outside events, and many people seem to be following that regardless of how they feel about it. More businesses and @schools@ are requiring vaccines or weekly testing, so we’ve also seen a steady increase in vaccine rate. The county is up to 73% of 12+ with at least one dose.

There are signs NYC hospitalization numbers are stabilizing too. We were never overrun this summer, thankfully, but there was a recent uptick and now it's been flat. Hopefully this lasts.
My covid PCR test came back negative. Yay! But now, I am perplexed as to where H and I got colds. He got it first, me a week later. So, I’m questioning his masking efficacy 😂

That's how I felt when I got strep on March 21, 2020. In NYC. Like, how did I get strep but not covid? And masks were not yet encouraged or required at that time. Viruses are strange.
Speaking of NYC and LA, I wish we were paying more attention to vaccination rates AND past infection rates. I know both of those cities were hit hard and I am not surprised you seem to be already seeing your peak with high vaccination rates.
Dr. Monica Gandhi says on twitter often- we will reach natural immunity the easy or hard way. Hard is infection. Easy is vaccination. But for most communities it will be a combo of both.

We had a surge this past winter but our most severe surge was Spring 2020. I haven't seen anything about reinfection rates, so I don't know if post-infection immunity still remains for people who were infected a year and a half ago. Personally, the ones I know who were infected then also got vaccinated this year so there would have be studies on unvaccinated people last infected in Spring 2020. I just checked two of the hardest hit ZIP codes from last spring and they're okay in terms of case trends right now - not as low as I expected, but still pretty low. And the ZIP codes I checked also show 100% of adults in one ZIP with at least one dose and the other at 90% of adults; the one at 90% is the ZIP where it was believed that half of the community of thousands was infected last spring.
But seriously, it's going to take mandates, because I'm no longer convinced this news is going to convince THAT many unvaccinated people. People just keep shifting the goal posts. It'll be, "The FDA caved to political pressure," "they still approved it too quickly," "we still don't have long ENOUGH term data," blah blah blah....
You nailed what I'm seeing already. Too quick! The FDA has rescinded approvals in the past! But, I'll remain hopeful that it will make some people get it.
I'm interested to see if work comes out with a mandate. Interestingly enough, we've been stuck in a loop when asking questions about a mask mandate. City says they will follow County, County says they will follow State, State says it's up to City/County. I just need someone to make a damn decision.

If this acts like other corona viruses reinfection is possible but likely fairly mild. So NYC might have waves of the virus for some time but without the uptick in hospital usage seen in prior waves. That is largely what the end game is for this virus.
Mandatory testing started today for unvaccinated HCW in CA and now they have another month or so to get vaccinated or get out (or get an exemption)
At least two of them bitched all day Saturday about the requirements, in between heading into the covid ICU. This will never make sense to me.
I’m curious to see how the exemption process goes. One coworker is using her religion (Catholicism) for an exemption. She said she got her priest to sign something even though it’s not supported by the bishops or Pope. Our hospital has a board that reviews each exemption so I guess it’s up to them now. I will be glad when this waiting period is over. Emotions are high on both ends and I want some resolution (hopefully meaning those without valid exemptions GTFO)

We're at much higher rates of infection than last summer, which makes me very nervous as schools will be starting here in 2 weeks (and under 16s are not able to get vaxxed). Our rates are going up in every way other than testing numbers - so tested positive, deaths and hospitalisations are all going up. Sigh.
I'm really hoping this approval means my workplace (not my company, but the company for the site where I work) will start mandating vaccines. I'm not holding my breath, since they haven't gone back to mandating masks inside even though COVID has been running through the building.
I got exposed again last week, which is why I'm really wanting these mandates. My work partner is fully vaccinated and not having symptoms, but tested due to a family member being sick (not with COVID) and he tested positive. Thankfully my PCR test from yesterday came back negative. But still, it would be great to work around more vaccinated people.

Ugh, and wasn't there a drop recently there that made us all optimistic? So sorry you're dealing with all of this again.

Masks don't do shit against surface spread, and many common colds do spread easily that way, even though we think COVID doesn't.

LA County has 10 million people and has logged 1.4 million cases, so about 14% of the population has had a known covid case. I suppose if you add raw numbers - 14% cases and 70% vaccinated, you'd get 84% with some immunity. However, many of those 1.4 million people who had covid also got vaccinated after they cleared the infection, so there is overlap. I have to believe that it's a combo of vaccine, some immunity from infection, plus all of the other mitigation efforts that county public health is putting into place.
And now those people who claimed they'd "quit" if this happened are going to be confronted with reality.
Can troops quit? I didn't think that was an option.
lol no. You can claim religious exemption, but can get kicked out for lying about it. There's paperwork throughout your career that states religious preference and if you've had every other vaccine up to this point then suddenly finding a religion for this vaccine is suspect. I'm on a "natural" fb page and people are always looking for religious exemptions. There's some lady on the page that has like an online ordination that is charging $200 to fill out the paperwork for people.

FDA approval may allow for some localities and businesses to impose vaccine mandates, because a few states' bans make mention of vaccines under EUA. Seems kind of dumb of those states to not realize full approval would eventually come.
I'm watching youtube videos of people (Americans and Canadians) who were abroad at the beginning of the pandemic. I didn't realize that health insurance agencies stopped coverage of those abroad after they had the opportunity to come "home". Which influenced many of these travelers to get a flight back to their country of origin.

Hawaii has also been seeing some of its highest case counts since the start of the pandemic. Meanwhile, tourism has returned at record numbers (thanks to cheap flights and people wanting to travel domestically). The governor is now asking people to stay home.
