Hawaii has also been seeing some of its highest case counts since the start of the pandemic. Meanwhile, tourism has returned at record numbers (thanks to cheap flights and people wanting to travel domestically). The governor is now asking people to stay home.
On the plus side, my COVID test came out negative. On the minus, the doctor thinks I have pneumonia from an unknown source. She still does not want to see me in the office, so I think she is afraid I also have a false negative. It still means I am quite uncomfortable and not willing to go to work just yet, though.

This happened to me in May, right down to them not wanting to see me in person. So they diagnosed pneumonia by ruling other stuff out and put me on antibiotics. My basic symptoms were a cough and feeling like shit. I felt 80% better after antibiotics and as predicted by the doc, the cough lingered for a good 6+ weeks. So I spent 6 weeks telling people that I didn't have covid, multiple negative tests, just pneumonia but not contagious, don't worry!
I just listened to a webinar from the lymphoma research foundation and while I thought I didn’t qualify for a third shot now based on the recommendations…. That doctor pretty much said yes. I was planning on waiting until my next oncology appointment (6 weeks off) to talk to my doctor, but ended up sending him a message tonight.
Like anyone needs a new Twitter follow, but @scitimetracy does these tiktok “duets” where she plays fear mongering woo and corrects it. I just watch it through Twitter. She is an professor of immunology.

Speaking of NYC and LA, I wish we were paying more attention to vaccination rates AND past infection rates. I know both of those cities were hit hard and I am not surprised you seem to be already seeing your peak with high vaccination rates.
Dr. Monica Gandhi says on twitter often- we will reach natural immunity the easy or hard way. Hard is infection. Easy is vaccination. But for most communities it will be a combo of both.
LA County has 10 million people and has logged 1.4 million cases, so about 14% of the population has had a known covid case. I suppose if you add raw numbers - 14% cases and 70% vaccinated, you'd get 84% with some immunity. However, many of those 1.4 million people who had covid also got vaccinated after they cleared the infection, so there is overlap. I have to believe that it's a combo of vaccine, some immunity from infection, plus all of the other mitigation efforts that county public health is putting into place.
I should look this up, but the number of “known” Covid cases might only be 1/3rd of all Covid, if that, since many people don’t get tested (especially early on) or don’t have symptoms bad enough to know.

Work just sent a covid update. About 80% of our staff have received at least one dose (2,000 staff total). BUT, this month alone we've had two likely workplace transmission incidents. Before this month, there was only one likely workplace transmission incident in the last 13 months. This sucks.
I think insurance companies raising premiums could possibly be the most effective way to get the unvaccinated to change their minds. No one is forcing them (so they get to keep their FREEDOMS)…but it’s their CHOICE. Get vaccinated or pay up. I’d guess that most people won’t pay $$$$ just to stay unvaccinated. It absolutely makes sense for insurance companies to do this, as they can show in black and white how much extra it costs them.
According to NYtimes graphs- Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana are seeing 14 day decreases in cases. I believe if memory serves me correctly they were also the first states to see surges. Hospitalizations are still elevated or growing in all of the states though, which isn't surprising.
Anyways, it will be interesting to see if the trend continues and if that will be the timeline for other hard hitting states to start seeing cases go down. Perhaps a combo of vaccines working, people taking preventative measures and then just a whole bunch of new people getting infected and now having temporary immunity.

Agreed. I think between this and if work places mandate testing for those who do not vaccinate and they have to pay out of pocket for tests (since insurance likely won't cover if its just routine and not due to exposure) that may force some people to get vaccinated.
My sister just tested positive for COVID. I don't know the details of how things turned out with payment, but she was waffling on whether or not she should because she read that it was going to cost her $200 to do a rapid test. She was supposed to fly to see my parents tonight, so waiting for PCR results was not really an option - she just developed symptoms last night so she wouldn't have gotten tested earlier than that. She is fully vaccinated.
Why the hell isn't testing free by now? We are never going to get ahead of this if people have to choose between a big bill for testing or just taking their chances. She just had some sneezing/stuffy nose so the most likely assumption would have been that she had allergies. She could have ended up sitting on an airplane today with COVID if she hadn't been being cautious.
My last two tests were free. Answered the questions on Walgreens site, indicated I needed a test before travel to reduce the spread of covid, and they did not ask for a dime when I got the tests.
Now, Walgreens is where I get my scripts, so maybe the test is free with insurance?

I just bought some antigen tests from Walgreens for situations like this. They're $25 for a box of two so not free but easy to have on hand.
Considering that my WEDDING attendance hinged on whether or not it was a game day - this may persuade my family down there. No one wanted a repeat of my cousins wedding with the uncles wearing earpieces.

Honestly, while I'm a huge fan of mandates, I think things like financial penalties might ultimately be just as effective if they're steep enough. Make it tough to be unvaccinated.

I agree. When I’ve seen this argument on social media though, it becomes gross. Because it is clear the antivax crowd also tends to be fatphobic, so you can guess what their responses are when insurance increases are brought up. You know, they have their perfect immune systems and all.

Are baseball games considered risky again with delta? I have tickets to a game next weekend and H is on the fence about going. We’ll be outdoors, but no masks required (unless you’re indoors) and it’ll be packed with people.

July seems like an eternity ago re: Delta but we went and I felt fine. We weren't shoulder to shoulder with anyone else though, we had seats here and there separating us from others. If I felt anxious I would have put on a mask for that extra layer of protection but we didn't wear our masks. I still feel okay about being outside in general though.
