DH and DS(21 months) were both tested this morning since they both developed wicked runny noses yesterday. In the meantime, it turns out everyone at the home daycare is sick as well, so it’s closed today and tomorrow and they are all going in for testing as well.
I’m hoping the PCR test results come back before tomorrow morning so that DD can possibly go visit my Mom tomorrow afternoon (who is fully vaxed).
We are wearing cloth masks outside (3 of the 4 of us are vaccinated). Unvaxxed kid doesn’t go inside anywhere. When we go to school in 2 weeks, she’ll wear a KN95 (which she wore for hours on a plane a few weeks ago and was fine) or double mask with a disposable under cloth. That’s the best I can do - the school is highly vaccinated and masking so we’re just hoping for the best until she can get a shot.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I like the AAP and all. But maskless, vaccineless adults are fucking it up for kids. Including my kids, who are under 11.
And also, FDA, where the hell are you with the EUA for kids?!? Where are you?!?!?
My patience for this has completely run out. It’s like things got better in May and all work on this just stopped. Then it was well, maybe September. Or mid winter. Or maybe 2022. We don’t know.
Well fucking figure it out!! I need the FDA to work nonstop until it’s done. In Texas there is just no way to avoid Covid. None. I am so mad that kids gave up SO much and just got neglected. As always.
Anyways my 10 year old looks like a 7th grader. I am ready for off label use here.
Also? I don’t really like AAP. I’ll follow them here and all and blah blah blah but their advice is not always followed in this house.

I wear the surgical masks or triple-layer cloth masks (which I assume are as good as the surgical masks because they have 3 layers but who knows anymore). My kid wears kid-sized versions of the surgical masks.
I really dislike the narrative on both sides that people are going to make individual decisions (ie not wear a mask, or ask their doc to vaccinate their 11 and under kids) based on their feelings.

I mean we are all human and have feelings.
I won’t actually ask to get my 10 y/o vaccinated because obviously there aren’t enough safety signals to indicate it would be the right thing to do. Venting is fine though which I assume most here need to do as well.

Sure, and I was venting as well. I do, personally, know a family that are going to doctor shop until they find someone to vax their kid. That isn't right either. Vaccine science says you need the appropriate doses for how developed the immune system is. That's why we have vaccine schedules, dosages, boosters, etc.

Absolutely. It's why I am mentally shaking my fist at FDA. Even though I know I don't know anything about the EUA process and maybe this is crazy expedited.
I'm just so frustrated and angry. I want to punch everyone who is eligible and hasn't received a vaccination RIGHT IN THE FACE.

Ah ok. I get everyone is nervous and wants to protect their kids immediately. It’s the hardest thing about this. Parents are well protected but our kids are vulnerable. Doing that isn’t right though. The last thing pediatricians need right now are frantic calls asking for an exception.

Today’s Daily episode was just a Q&A with parents and they reiterated the EUA probably won’t happen for a few more months. I was hoping for new information that would make it happen sooner but nope. At this point I will be thrilled if it’s announced before the end of 2021 for the 5-11s. And my 4yo will probably have to wait until her 5th birthday in June.
For the KN95 masks, how much are you spending per mask? I'll be honest - I've been relying on cloth masks in large part because it's affordable when my kid needs a couple a day at school. I could be convinced to switch to regular disposable masks if those are better, but it seems like the KN95 are a lot more expensive.
Not going to lie, they’re expensive. I just bought more and it was $75 for 36 masks at our local pharmacy. In our case, because my husband is immunocompromised we need the strongest protection we can possibly get, so we use those (I researched the single brand they sell and they’re one that performs well, and that’s the only masks they sell at all). I cringe about the environmental impact, but his safety is paramount. Once he is able to be vaccinated, hopefully at some point this fall depending on his B cell count, we will relax a bit and can go back to cloth masks and maybe even eat at a restaurant for the first time since March 2020
While I appreciate their stance, not all 11 year olds are identical.
Mine is nearly 6 foot tall and 185 pounds. I just want her vaccinated.
My understanding is that it’s not about body size but about immune system development.
I understand that in theory but she’s already mostly through puberty because she clearly hit her growth spurt early. Quite sure she’s more developed then most 12 year olds.

The reason I'm pissed at FDA is because they signaled they were going to ask of an additional 6 months of data before they approved anything for the 11 and under set. They didn't have nearly 6 months of data before approving for adults and adolescents. Before delta, I was sort of OK with that thought, since kids' immune systems are still developing, etc. But now, I'm not. Get the emergency auth out for kids based on the same amount of data that you had for adults. Everything I've read says there's basically zero chance of side effects developing after 2 months post vaccination.

Agreed. When the risk of kids getting a severe case was more minimal it made sense to ask for additional testing. That's no longer what we are looking at. Pediatric hospitals are being overwhelmed by Delta, get the vaccine out.

I haven’t the slightest idea how to measure immune system development, what changes take place, how you can tell, etc. Do you know that it correlates to puberty?
I also have an 11 yo so I feel you! But I don’t understand enough about what needs to happen inside of her body to make it safe for her so I’ll wait u til she’s 12 or it’s approved.

Meanwhile the vaccine coordinator for our state just announced that he expects it in September/maybe October...

Yes, this. It seems like they are basically saying they are making a giant show of collecting way more safety data than they truly need in the hopes of convincing more parents to choose to have their kids vaccinated. I'm all well and good with trying to get through to antivax parents, BUT I DON'T WANT MY OWN KID'S HEALTH PUT AT RISK FOR IT.

I am wearing cloth masks. I have a fat face. I have not been able to find a single surgical mask or KN95 this entire pandemic that actually comfortably fits my face. And I have ordered from several different brands. Every KN95 is too tight/small and every surgical mask rides up into my eyes and I'm constantly messing with it, which is not effective, and they're also too small so there are gaps on the side and it's not a proper fit.
I'm vaccinated. I have masks that fit properly. And before I was vaccinated, I wore a filter in my cloth masks. I also talk for 8 hours a day in my mask as a teacher, so yes, I'm going to wear what's comfortable and actually fits my face.
My daughter is 11y,10m,3w (and some change) old. I sincerely doubt her immune system is going to be drastically different in ~5 weeks, but her health may be after 5 more weeks of a FL middle school without a vaccine.
Of course we're not going to doctor shop, but I not pretending it makes sense.

Honestly, I would consider it in your situation. And I’m a rule follower.

I would probably get my kid the shot in that scenario and I can’t imagine anyone would give you grief for it. Ugh, what a tough spot.

I can tell that the school/delta stuff is ramping up my covid anxiety. Last weekend I went through the bathroom cabinets and made sure we had unexpired OTC meds for fevers/cold symptoms/digestive issues. I got a pack of ginger ale and some of the soups we like when we're sick.
It's really crappy back-to-school shopping to be doing. But at least I feel like we're set to deal with whatever happens.
My province will begin requiring vaccine cards for a variety of activities, including eating out at restaurants. I am so here for it. You want to participate in society? You roll up your sleeve and do your part.
mofongo off label prescriptions are legal and common. This would be the same as a doctor writing an off label Rx for a med and a pharmacist having to fill that med. the pharmacist would still check to make sure the dosage is appropriate, the medical rationale is clear etc.
Doctor shopping to fulfill a parental wish that isn’t recommended by your child’s medical team is a totally different situation. That’s dangerous.
We let my daughter spend the night at a friends house Friday. Saturday when I went to pick her up, I made a comment about how we made it two weeks without our kids getting quarantined.
The mom was like “oh no, my kindergartener is quarantined until next week”
This was right after she told me she loves having my kid over because she’s so sweet to this kid and lets him hang out with them.
DD told me she had a bit of a sore throat and had an elevated temp this evening. We got tested and it was negative tonight, but WTAF.
