turkletsmom I have been seeing that it will be Cat 4 at landfall. Are you planning to evacuate? Be safe!
No we decided early this morning to stay. As long as it doesn't shift too much east, we should be spared the worst of it. We have enough propane to get us through 4-5 days of running our fridge and a window ac unit we have for exactly this reason. And most importantly, I have 90 days worth of anxiety meds LOL. Thank you!
I think those not used to storms don’t fully understand what a mandatory evac requires. It takes days to prep resources such as shelters and evac routes . This storm intensified quickly. I hope everyone gets out who can.
I get it, but then I don’t and I’ve lived in Nola my entire life. Katrina was even quicker than this storm. I will never forget I was at a girls night at someone’s house on a Friday night, someone brought up there was a hurricane. We were mostly like what?? What hurricane. Fast forward one day and we were all planning to evacuate and left by Sunday. We had contraflow and everything within 48hrs. We had an entire extra day for this storm and 16yrs to have learned from that. There should be a contingency plan. I do understand covid has complicated everything, but fuck some of it, it’s frustrating
.
Oh I totally agree it’s frustrating and they should have better plans by now. I just don’t think most people realize what it means to declare a mandatory evacuation (not you). People seem to think you just decree it and change traffic patterns so it’s a no brainer.

Large cities are hard to evacuate, too. Houston learned that in 2005 before Rita hit. Now no one wants to evacuate ever again which after that….fair.
My sister in central MS is telling us the traffic is brutal in her area right now, likely people driving through from LA or southern MS.
Well we are geniuses who are going to Jackson MS where the storm will also be headed to 🤣🤣, same thing happened with Katrina. My family left earlier and are already there so traffic will be good for us dummies. But still I’d rather a depression/tropical storm than a major hurricane.
Between covid and hurricanes im learning I thrive in these times. My anxiety and need to prep serves me and my H well. I have such comprehensive lists lol.
Have you read the book Salvage the Bones? It’s about Katrina and it was a tough read as someone who has no experience with hurricanes, so I’m not sure if it would be cathartic or triggering, but it was a beautiful book.
My friend is a travel nurse in NOLA right now and had to report to the hospital where she will be for who knows how long.
Stay safe everyone in the path.
This is what makes me sad and angry. The fact that so many doctors, nurses, hospital staff, etc. can’t evacuate because people are assholes and refused to get vaccinated.
(I know pre-Covid, there would still be those that have to stay but likely much minimal to what is required currently)
It’s never good when the advice is to keep a hammer or axe in your attic in case you have to escape your home vertically. Ugh. I’m sick to my stomach over this. Hurricanes are damaging in so many ways but especially mentally. Sending so many good thoughts to Louisiana.
I woke up to an alert that the storm is close to being a cat 5. I can’t believe how fast it gained so much strength. Thinking of everyone in Ida’s path. Please do what you can to stay safe.
Thanks! We got TS Grace last week and rain from Idaho before she was a storm this week. We are safe but there was quite a bit of flooding. So we knew this one was looking nasty for a few days now.
I hope everyone in it's way is able to get to safety.

I have a bad feeling about this one....like how quickly it came, how busy/burned out everybody is with COVID and back to school, the strength & trajectory from NOLA to Baton Rouge, disruptions this will cause to shipping & other supply/logistics issues on the MS River, and the infrastructure disruptions.

I'm really nervous about the aftermath of this storm on our medical infrastructure. I'm in Houston and our hospital situation is very bad here and I know it's no better in any of the areas surrounding Ida's path. I'm worried about what this will mean for the people in it's path and the further overcrowding of our hospitals. I'm angry that we've put ourselves in this position of not having enough space or resources to help people who will desperately need it in the coming days and weeks.
Did i miss a checkin on this? mofongo; @neworleans; everyone else? You ok?
I watched some of the evacuation footage and got the sweats thinking about Rita in 2005. The news looks bad in some areas, ok in others. How are y'all (if you have power).

Hey thanks! I posted in ML Ida thread and randoms. I am ok, but it’s all fucked up. I’m still in Jackson in a nice hotel:)
Glad you're safe!! Any idea when you think you'll start heading back?
My sister said it took 8 hrs from central city to mobile. She's holed up in a hotel in Tallahassee with her H and dog.
