Well, we only do long sleeve, long pants to sleep in winter.
My kid started not wearing the adorable PJ sets as sets so I gave up & he just wears a freebie tshirt (from camp or similar) & bottoms (b-ball style shorts in summer, flannel pants in winter). I don’t think other boys care this much about night time fashion?
My youngest wears random shirts & boxers-as-shorts (he wears briefs under them but just really like plaid bottoms). But he still digs flannel pj sets for winter.
So, I guess I’m more TeamWhatTheKidWants than either parent.
My 13 year old sleeps in his boxer briefs, but puts on an old t-shirt of my husbands and pj shorts when out of bed but before getting dressed.I will buy my kids matching pjs at christmas and he is still a good sport about wearing them but mainly for pictures lol.
As a mom, I am locked and loaded to fight the good fight that clothes at night need to be clean and not day clothes. So, don’t fall asleep in the clothes you wore all day. But “pjs” are whatever combination of T-shirts, fleece bottoms, pj sets, cotton shorts, whatever D wants. As long as it is clean and designated as pjs. Even for sleepovers.

Just because I am curious - can what is worn as PJs be worn more than one night? Or once they are worn at night they are no longer clean?

Not a MOOK. My DS (4) stopped sleeping in PJs at around 2? He sleeps in a tee shirt and undies (or previously a pull-up). He gets really hot when he sleeps, so he would overheat in the Hanna jammies. I still buy a pair each year so he has something for Pajama Day at school!
Both my boys sleep in boxers. If it’s a cold night, the teen wears a t-shirt with the boxers. Very cold, he wears flannel pj pants (his high school sells them in the spirit store and all his friends have them). The 7 year old runs hot so he pretty much sleeps in boxers year round.
I find this poll pretty hilarious. I have a very tall 9 year old who loves pajamas, and I've had such a hard time finding him a pair that fits. I was saying to people that apparently boys can wear pajamas, and men can wear pajamas, but middle school boys can't wear pajamas. And apparently it may be fact.
Team middle school boys should still be able to wear pajamas.

DS is 12.5 and wears actual pajamas 90% of the time. He usually wears pants and a short sleeved t-shirt. Some times the t-shirt is just a regular tee and not pajamas. But the pants are almost always pajamas.
He had a few sleepovers earlier in the summer (he's vaccinated and had them with other vaccinated friends). He'd always bring pajamas but I have no idea if he'd change into them.

Sometime around a year ago, DS announced that his friends ( ages 10/11) don't wear pajamas anymore, and just wear athletic shorts and a t-shirt to bed, so that's what he started doing. I don't really care either way, but I guess it saves me a little money as now I don't have to buy pajamas.
I'd let him do what he wants. My kids (12 and 10) don't do PJs anymore - they sleep in shorts and a t-shirt. Sometimes they wear PJ pants in the winter but they would not wear real PJs anymore.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
If, IF, he’ll be made fun of - well, then it will be a factor that will either upset him and he’ll never wear PJs again to a sleepover, or he won’t care what the other kids think of him.
While we don’t want our kids made fun of, some of this falls into “life lesson/ he needs to figure it out” territory.
With the update I would have him pack both, and he can decide what he wants to do once he is at the sleepover. If everyone else is wearing shorts he might want to or he might not.

I couldn’t do the poll from my phone, but grown men wear pajamas, especially if they are sleeping in a house with people who aren’t family. For my tween / teen (teen is now adult) we’ve gotten separates, so elastic waist looser leg pajama shorts or pants in plaid / flannel, plain t-shirt material or even more age appropriate characters that are sold on the men’s section. Often they will wear an old t-shirt or sports team shirt for a top and if it’s hot they might sleep without a shirt.
Pajamas help keep you warm which is more important if you sleep alone (vs. your DH who has the advantage of your body heat while sleeping in the same bed as you).
