Our tri county health dept mandated masks for 2-11 in schools but said schools could opt out. Our district did not opt out. Last Tuesday, there was a heated school board meeting when the anti-maskers anti-masked and the rational science believers got booed. Friday we got an e-mail from the district stating they were going to opt out of the mask mandate. Coincidentally, there is a bond measure being voted on in November. I am certain they pulled the mandate knowing they'd lose any possible votes from the anti-maskers if they kept the mandate.
I e-mailed the board my displeasure. Not my best e-mail, but it was in the heat of the moment.
I cannot for the life of me understand why you have fallen prey to anti-maskers who have as much knowledge of science and health care as your average rock does. This is putting all our children, ESPECIALLY our unvaccinated children, at risk and you are asking for more children out of school and less in person learning.
I am a frontline healthcare worker. If you had seen ANY of what I've seen in the last 18 months, there is no way you would make masks optional. Our children are our everything, and it's not enough we have to worry about gun violence in school, now we have to worry about irresponsible parents sending their kids to school without masks and getting innocent children sick.
Please stick to science, not foul mouth uneducated anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers who have no concept of how horrible this disease can be.
And then I got this reply from a school board member... who also used to be a board member for a hospital home for kids undergoing cancer treatments at Children's Hospital. I cannot comprehend why a person in his position would send something like this.
Was that a serious question? Because I certainly didn't find it funny at all.
I had no idea how to reply to it other than that.
Also, I'm not worried about removing his name. I messaged this to one of our news anchors in hopes that maybe Kevin would get his 15 minutes of fame for being an asshole.

Honestly, this is why school boards should not exist. So many fucking death cultists and dickheads making choices that they have no right to be making. Way, way, way too many districts are dealing with nasty assholes like Kevin.
I don’t know what the answer to school oversight is, but a group of douchebags content to antagonize the public and destroy public schools certainly is not it.
I’ve written a similar email to our school board and received one passive aggressive reply from the known anti-vaxxer, but this is next level. My patience for this nonsense is wearing thin and my head would have exploded. I’m so mad on your behalf!
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

In the same breath, some of us living in backwards hell holes (tx, fl) may be occasionally saved by a more progressive school board. Their hands are certainly tied in some ways due to state laws, but it’s our only freaking chance for some reasonable decision making.

I get that, but in a perfect world there wouldn’t need to be lifesaving measures. Schools would school, no outside interference required.
As a teacher and parent, post that all over social media. Tag the board, the district, the school your kids attend, the feeder pattern PTA, the state legislature, EVERYONE. School board members want to fuck around, they need to find out. Now.
