How are random citizens going to know whether a fetal heartbeat was detected? Did I miss it?
They won't. But it won't matter.
I can see this as a test that the Republicans are doing. Can they get citizens to rat on their friends and family? If they can, well, looks like you have Gilead sorted in one state.
ETA: I deleted my statement because apparently that is wrong. Someone ELSE could sue in that case, but not the perpetrator. You know, IF they were actually found guilty.
I didn't think it was possible to feel this deep of a hatred for people I don't even know.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
This isn't going to stop in Texas. This is an outrage. I just don't even know what to do. I've donated to multiple organizations but I feel helpless. They can't wear fucking masks, but they can tell a woman what to do with her body.

Honestly I’ve been crying on and off all day and I’m a little worried that this is the thing that finally tips me over the edge into a full fledged meltdown.
Yes the person/persons seeking the abortion or assisting an individual pay.
I thought I read the patient can't be sued, just those helping the patient.
Yes, the law lets people sue anyone who helps facilitate the abortion, in any way, and it is enforced only through those lawsuits brought by private citizens, not by prosecution by Texas law enforcement or whatever. As I understand it, it's an attempt to work around Roe v Wade (we aren't making it illegal for the person who gets the abortion! Just making it illegal to provide it or help someone get it and prohibitively expensive to fight the frivolous suits that will result). That way also the state can't be sued to stop the law (since there is no specific enforcer), they have to wait to fight against the lawsuits brought brought by private citizens.
How are random citizens going to know whether a fetal heartbeat was detected? Did I miss it?
Probably won't, but it's also state law that an ultrasound must be done 24 hrs before an abortion, so if someone knows someone got an abortion, they could probably sue and just wait to see what that ultrasound showed (I assume it's discoverable/subpoena-able? Not a lawyer) if the suit is allowed to proceed. Half the point is creating a mountain of frivolous suits that must be fought/paid for by the abortion providers most likely to be sued under this law, creating a huge burden on their existence and ability to continue to function in their limited capacity.

i had a frank talk with my coworker at dinner & tried to explain how awful this is....for his daughter, for his wife, his friends, and for all women in general. He didn't seem to believe what i was describing to him in how this law was passed and what its effects would be.
This is so fucked up and I feel like this is an issue that most people won't care about protecting the rights of a few people until it impacts them.
Honestly I’ve been crying on and off all day and I’m a little worried that this is the thing that finally tips me over the edge into a full fledged meltdown.
I've been in the throes of an anxiety attack for the past two days. I have some personal stuff going on that is also contributing, but the general feeling I have about that 10 years from now things are going to be Really Fing Bad is being exacerbated by the situation with the Texas legislation (and by generally looking at what Texas is doing, and knowing that is what the GOP will do to the whole country with the minority rule they are entrenching with gerrymandering and voter suppression and and and).
The twist between this and the whole “I’m not wearing a mask because it’s my rights and choice..!!” in Texas (and other states) is just….I’m speechless.
I’ve donated to some of the orgs listed and will happy to support any D that’s up and coming in Texas.
Between this and the TX voting changes….I know to focus my efforts here in AZ and even more so in AZ.
This is the thing that has tipped me over the edge to total despair. I have been trying to cling and keep a positive attitude. But this did me in. COVID denial, climate change and now this INSANE law. How do we come back from this? Is this the end of what we know of our society.
The supreme court upheld the ban in a 5-4 ruling. So I guess on to plan B which who the fuck knows what that is at the moment.
So now the GOP has a new roadmap for doing everything they want to do that otherwise violates the Constitution. Want to discourage people from criticizing GOP politicians? Just outsource it to the populace to give them a right to sue. Want to make everyone go to Christian church? Let the populace sue anyone they see at home or at another denomination church on Sunday. And so forth. And oops, sorry, SCoTUS says, nothing we can do!

Holy shit. I am beyond words right now. Hugs to all that are suffering with this, and for all that will - fat lot of good hugs will do, I know, but it's all I can offer right now as I try to hold my own shit together.
I don't even know what to say. I have so much anger towards the GOP. I've been donating money, but I don't even know what to do anymore. I'm sorry to those who this is affecting deeply.
