In my local Democrats group, a WOMAN posted something like "Who's trying to decide where to move?" and a few other WOMEN responded in commiseration, some have loose plans, etc. And then some old white man is like "We can't run away, we have to stay and fight." And I said "I get that sentiment, but it's easier to say when you're not the target of these policies." And he responded "We're all targets of Abbott's overreach." Dude. Can we have ONE day to be pissed off and despair a little about this?! Fuck off. I just responded, "Oh, do you have a uterus? My apologies, then."
And then I see the argument that it's a privilege to be able to leave. Well, it's also a privilege to be able to stay. People have gotten way too quick to use "privilege" as an argument for/against everything. And oftentimes the ones using it are the ones who have it.
Honestly I’ve been crying on and off all day and I’m a little worried that this is the thing that finally tips me over the edge into a full fledged meltdown.
I've been in the throes of an anxiety attack for the past two days. I have some personal stuff going on that is also contributing, but the general feeling I have about that 10 years from now things are going to be Really Fing Bad is being exacerbated by the situation with the Texas legislation (and by generally looking at what Texas is doing, and knowing that is what the GOP will do to the whole country with the minority rule they are entrenching with gerrymandering and voter suppression and and and).

100% this. ALL OF THIS. I've been given so much shit for saying that as a queer person I'm not interested in living in a state that actively limits my rights. I have dedicated my entire career to advancing the rights of people living in states that are in worse shape than the place I live (and in the places I've lived as well.) I'm not going to sacrifice myself and my family to die on that hill. Yes, it's a privilege to be able to choose where to live. Yes, it's also a privilege to have the means/energy/etc to stay and fight. It's ABSOLUTELY privilege to act like being afraid of the tyranny of this sort of law is overblown or exaggerated and that people need to "get to work" instead of grieving and planning their next steps to protect their own safety or that doing those things is mutually exclusive of fighting to change things.
There is a planned parenthood a few miles from me. I just drove by and the fucking protestors are out with huge signs that say WE LOVE TEXAS. It made me burst into tears.
I am half tempted to go back with a ton of eggs and throw them at them. kidding, sort of.

So like, if this is how the GOP is going to play, I would like Dem states to make a law saying anyone can sue a person carrying a gun or helping someone procure one.
Expect Florida to take up its own legislation further restriction abortion during the 2022 Legislative session.
On Thursday, Florida Senate President Wilton Simpson, R-Trilby, told WFLA the Legislature is “already working on” a so-called “heartbeat bill.” In other states like Mississippi and Texas, such bills have banned abortion as early as six weeks, before some women begin to suspect they are pregnant.
When asked to confirm his legislative intentions, Simpson sent a Times/Herald reporter the smiling sunglasses emoji.
Dallas-based Match Group is establishing a fund to assist employees and their dependents in seeking abortion care in other states following the passage of a near-total ban on abortions in Texas this week.
Match chief executive Shar Dubey notified employees of the fund in an email obtained by The Dallas Morning News.
“The company generally does not take political stands unless it is relevant to our business. But in this instance, I personally, as a woman in Texas, could not keep silent,” Dubey wrote, giving employees notice of a statement she’d provided to news media about the new legislation.
My God, it's been so hard to see this. Can I get an abortion on demand where I am now? No, but the option exists for rape and safety, and the country isn't pretending like it's all freedom and puppies.
I've been gone from the US for a month. In that month, I've become even more confused, because it's my home, my roots, my heritage, and it's an embarrassment. What the fuck is happening? How?
I know I'm speaking from a place of extreme privilege, but I am so so glad we are out while being so so heartbroken at all the ways the country has failed its' citizens. We all knew it was coming in 2016 and we were called over reactors, and to watch it unfold is just... christ, it hurts.
Not exactly. Nina Totenberg this morning on NPR had a really good explanation of what the ruling does and doesn't do.
It'll still be litigated through the courts. It ultimately could still be that the law is ruled unconstitutional.
I'm not trying to downplay how awful this is, but it isn't "the end."
Agreed. I think Roberts dissenting and the majority acknowledging the existence of “serious questions regarding the constitutionality” signals the possibility that it may eventually be struck down.
The Argus Leader reports that Noem is taking advantage of the Supreme Court ruling allowing the new Texas law to go into effect to push for even more restrictions in her state.
"Following the Supreme Court's decision to leave the pro-life law in place, I have directed the Unborn Child Advocate in my office to immediately review the new law and current South Dakota laws to make sure we have the strongest pro life laws on the books," she announced on Thursday.
I am legitimately surprised we haven’t already had announcements from GA and other red states of identical or even worse laws.
Oklahoma passed a few similar laws that go into affect November 1. Our state Supreme Court usually overturns the most egregious ones, but I’m not so sure they will now.

It’s been pretty clear in covid times in SD that there is definitely no Living, Breathing Person Advocate in the governor’s office though.
All the kids on tiktok are filling the website with entries. Per usual the youth will save us when it comes to starting a revolution.
So I am curious how this website will ever find anything credible. Honestly it probably doesn't matter. Their main goals are to stop abortion and allow people to harass others. There won't need to be a lawsuit to make this successful I guess. ugh

Ah, if Right to Life is monitoring this website, they’ll find something. That org is evil and they are dogged in their disgusting pursuits. They hand out food on the sidewalk of our local clinic to disrupt medical procedures with anesthesia, hop in front of cars, pose as clinic escorts to force pregnant people into their building for an unwanted sonogram, harass patients and follow them into neighboring businesses, and are basically the reason why the cops are called all the time and I have to take all kinds of active shooter and self protection training as an escort.
So wait, a law was enacted to benefit a single business/organization? One private group is overseeing the implementation of this public law?? That is fucked up on so many levels. Replace abortion with guns and the GOP would be losing their minds over such a proposal.

I know PP takes a, “Just ignore the assholes” who protest approach, but we have a few people who come out every now and again on clinic procedure days and bump some fun dance music and block protestors with signs and stuff. I love it when those people are there. Love watching the bead rattlers get big mad.

I follow a few clinic escorts on TikTok, and they spend a lot of time telling the protestors how stupid they are. It's very enjoyable to watch.
I don't know enough about the shadow docket to know how helpful this could be
Durbin announces Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing "examining the Supreme Court’s abuse of its 'shadow-docket’” following Texas abortion ruling
