We had an outdoor playground play date with friends Sunday, but it started raining so other family suggested going to their house, indoors. I felt awkward saying no, so I just went with it. This was our first indoor play date in 18 months. Mom texted me today that her son has strep. FUCK! My DD2 and him were playing very closely together (it was super cute). How contagious is strep? Should I just accept she’s most likely going to get it? 😭
It is very contagious BUT I will say that when my kids were in daycare they never got it from anyone (and there were a ton of cases over the years). Be aware that there are many symptoms outside of the usual sore throat you hear about, such as stomach stuff, temps, and vomiting - things you wouldn't normally think of strep for. Best to just get your DD tested to play it safe.
Could go either way. Id take strep over most any other virus because it is so easy to get rid of. We’ve had it a bunch of times and we have never given it to one another. Most recently dd1 had it over Fourth of July.

It’s very contagious but the good thing is that you know what it is already if you get symptoms so it’s just a quick 24 hour blip while the abx set in and then back to normal. Honestly, in some ways it’s better than a cold!
I mean it’s just strep. If your kid develops symptoms get a strep test. My kids rarely have passed strep between them, in fact I think my middle kid has never had strep. Even when my others have had it. It’s contagious but not like guaranteed contagious. If your kid gets strep you get antibiotics and it’s fine. It’s not that big of a deal.
DH and I had it a couple years ago but the kids didn’t get it and we spent 12 hrs in a car together while I was ill. He got it because he drank from my water bottle. I didn’t know I was sick until the next day. We were on vacation and there are no urgent cares in Estes Park. 😒

My sister used to get it ALL the time. I’ve never had strep. Some people supposedly aren’t as susceptible. (I used to get plenty of other junk, just not strep).
DS has had strep a lot. None of the rest of the family has been infected by him. Strep is easy though. 24 hours of antibiotics and they already feel better, unlike a cold which can linger for a week or more.

I don’t think I’ve actually ever caught it from someone I could trace it back to. It just seems to happen to me every couple years. I’m a frequent flyer for strep tests anytime my throat is nasty looking, because I don’t want to give it to a kid.
The one time I was most at risk a kid had coughed and sneezed all over me and went to the dr that afternoon where they were positive. I came down with a sore throat, but tested negative.

The last time I had strep I think 13 or 14 out of 18 students had it, I had it, and my sub caught it. But that turned out to be a kid not showing the regular symptoms sat in my class the whole time and didn’t get tested until like two weeks later.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
Thx all. I guess we haven’t been sick in so long I’m paranoid and I was worried about kids being out of school for an extended time, but you are right she should be able to return after 24 hours on abx so it won’t be too bad. I think I’m traumatized from all the stress of worrying about Covid, school starting, etc.
No masks and I’m pretty sure the sick kid sneezed on DD2 😵💫 so I’ll keep an eye out for symptoms and get her tested ASAP if she has any. Hopefully we will be spared.

I don’t know the science behind this, but anecdotally it seems true (for me). I’ve been tested for strep several times, and have never had it. My husband gets it, pretty much every year, and never passes it to any of us. My daughter had both flu and strep at the same time in January 2020, and nobody else got it (including said strep-prone husband). It’s bizarre.

I think this might be what I read a few years ago? They found in a small study a genetic link to getting strep frequently.
Toss up. Just watch her closely. DS had flu B AND strep winter 2020 pre-Covid and I swear we DID NOT KNOW so we went on planned trip to a WATERPARK and all slept in the same hotel room and the kids shared a drink. That night, he got super sick and we had to go home early. None of the other kids got the flu (all were vaccinated, FYI, including DS), and only one other kid got strep. I watched them super carefully and was doing temperature checks. DD's temp started going up while she still felt fine, so we got her on antibiotics right away and it's like she was never even "sick." Just took the antibiotics.
I have twins who play together constantly and share a bedroom. They’ve each had strep once, a long time apart (I don’t remember, maybe a year? It was not connected.) and did not pass it to the other. I don’t really think there’s any predicting it.
