We are getting the remnants of Hurricane Ida in PA, and it's been raining almost non-stop for a good 12 hours. Schools are cancelled today due to roads being closed from flooding and a few buildings with no power all throughout the area.
It's only the 2nd week of school, but I'm happy with a day off because my kids are already SO.BUSY with all the stuff.
We've had 2 days of school and I already feel like I have no time. Between the bus issues and she's already had homework both nights (which requires our help because they're like "bring in a baby picture" that I have to print for her), and we signed up for dance last night, I'm just exhausted.
I'm hoping my boss comes back to work tomorrow because I'm planning to take my WFH day.

We are getting the rain also. My 12 year old is still asleep which I guess he needed it. It is crazy to go back to a day where they get off instead of online learning. Not all of the kids have received their laptops yet. I am just happy I can work from home. On a good note though, the rain is making the temps for the next week feel fall-like!
I thought that once the kids were back in school that I would make it into the office on a more regular schedule, hahahahaha NOPE. Last week started ok, and then I had tire problems. This week the electrician was working on our screen porch yesterday and needed access to the house so there was another day. I'm in the office this morning, but planning to leave around lunch time so I'm home before Ida's remnants come through. DH is supposed to come home from a two week trip on Friday but will probably be sent down to LA to help with pumping operations, so with him gone all the things are going to continue to fall on me for awhile.

I am not ready for school to start, need lunchboxes, masks, fill out forms, so much to do.
I am LOVING my experience with Havenly. The designer has great ideas, and I am so excited for how the room is coming together. Now just want things to get here!
I love summer, but we lose all sense of structure in our family. So I am enjoying the return to a bit more organization in our house. I am getting up early and getting good workouts in. I have cooked dinner every night the last couple weeks. We are going to bed at reasonable hours. I have a long list of organization projects in the house that I am tackling at night. I just showed up to work 10 minutes early.....which in the summer it is a miracle if I am only 10 minutes late.
I love being a hot mess in the summer. It is nice to let go of the rules. But it also feels nice (at least temporarily) to return to law and order. :-)
My boss' boss is on vacation this week, and I don't think that I ever realized how many meetings she runs, because my calendar is virtually clear all week which is very strange.
I was supposed to start Whole30 today and I already failed because I forgot to go out last night and get non-dairy creamer for my coffee. It's okay, I'll start with meal #2
Neither of my kids are having a good school year so far. DS12 didn't know anyone in his classes but seems to be having an ok attitude about it all.
DD10 came home bawling on her first day of 5th grade. Her best friend moved away in 3rd grade, but they've kept in touch and she is back this year. They aren't in class together this year and her poor friend said she sat alone at lunch and recess and no one talked to her. DD wanted to switch classes to be with her, but the counselor said that wasn't possible. For now they have art class together which I guess is the best they can do. Her friend is really shy and said she's ok if she doesn't have any friends, but poor DD is so upset and starts crying whenever she thinks of her sitting alone.
We're also getting Ida remnants in western VA. Last night was full of tornado watches and a few warnings for our area. A tornado did touch down an hour north west of us, but nothing in our area. Still not fun to wake up to the warning sounds going off on my phone! It's going to be a long dreary day.
I got confirmation late afternoon that my work equipment shipped! Looks like I should get it Friday. I am soooo ready to start the new job!
DS started school this week, but DD doesn't start till next Wednesday. It can't come soon enough. She is starting a new school and having panic attacks every night at bed time about going there.
I truly believe that once she starts, she will love it.
But the anticipation and anxiety over the change is killing both of us.
I saw Alanis Morissette in concert last night, and she was fabulous. It was a lot of nostalgia listening to so many of those songs. We got lucky and the predicted storms did not arrive until long after the concert had ended. I am very tired today, though, after going to bed close to midnight and waking up at 5:15am to attend my H's grandmother's funeral on Zoom.
I drank coffee before eating today, and suddenly felt super nauseous right as I was trying to get out the door. I hadn't eaten a thing since 5:30 last night so I think my stomach was just reacting to being empty of anything but coffee. I have since eaten breakfast and feel 100% better (or maybe 95% since I'm still very tired!).
We are leaving for the long weekend tomorrow morning, and I don't feel ready at all. Tonight I need to go to 2 stores, do laundry, change the litter box, and pack. And I don't normally even get home until like 6-6:30 so that's kind of a lot to do after that point! I just really don't want to have to buy all of our supplies for the weekend while we're in TN. COVID rates and masking are much better here than there so I'd like to avoid stores entirely if we can.
As I was opening a tube of quick oats, I dropped it on the floor. About 4 handfuls of quick oats ended up on the carpet. I got the cheap vacuum cleaner we have in the office and it made it 10 times worse. Even though the setting was for short carpet/bare floors, it turned it into a powder and it was spreading everywhere. What's worse, it's a bagless vacuum. There is NOTHING in the canister. Which means every time the cleaning lady will be using it, it will spread white powder everywhere on dark green carpet. I am bringing my Dyson to fix all this mess.
Another person getting soaked by Ida. We had some pretty intense rain/storms go through last night and have already gotten I guess things are supposed to pick up again this afternoon. The weather is supposed to be bad enough that our middle school cancelled a back-to-school event tonight.
I took yesterday "off" -- meaning I didn't do my usual rush of daily work but I did still schedule a number of phone calls to make progress on a work project. I worked out, got the kids to school, had a leisurely morning & took care of various things around the house, did my calls, had an acupuncture appointment, cooked something new for dinner. I didn't make as much progress on the work stuff as I would've liked, but overall, it was kind of huge for my mental health because I felt like I was giving myself space to make progress on the things I needed to do by taking the daily crush out of the picture. I'm a contractor and I have a pretty flexible schedule, so I think I need to start building days like that in on a more regular basis. And TBH I probably need to just take more time off in general.

Our neighborhood has so.many.birds. Mostly pigeons and gray doves. The pigeons are smug and lazy AF, and love to sit on the sidewalks or porches while refusing to move faster than an irritated waddle if they happen to be an inconvenient location.
Our older dog is fascinated by birds. He is always leashed outside. Right after we moved in, I made the mistake of letting him bounce after a pigeon (to the end of his leash), thinking the pigeon would fly off. It did not. It shook a wing at him, made a half-ass attempted to run and then plopped itself down a few feet away and stared at us. Now the dog thinks pigeons would make excellent playmates, so I have to keep an eye out for pigeons on our walks to preempt his trying to bound after one. Weirdly, I've gotten pretty good at this, and so far I haven't been dragged off my feet. He's only about 40 pounds, but he's all muscle and is quicker than he should be for his age.
We're on our walk at 6 am today, and the dog found a damn pigeon lounging on the steps leading to someone's door. I couldn't see it because of a bush. He took off after it, and of course it didn't fly, but sprinted directly into the metal security door of the house, which made a huge noise and I'm sure woke up anyone inside. The bird was stunned for half a second, then that smug fucker shook itself off into a crouch and stared at us. I'm surprised my wrist and arm are still in one piece.
Clearly, this is my problem because I can't convince my dog to resist the temptation of a bird, but I've decided to blame the pigeons for their eff-you attitudes.
Our puppy is Clifford the Big Red Dog He gained 10 lbs in 3 weeks! And he was not some scrawny little think to begin with, he was quite a chonk. The vet said he looks great and we all think he is going to be a big boy.
Today is Gโs first day of schoolโฆ.and theyโre closing at 11:30 because of weather. She looked so cute this morning!
Dd had her first night of gymnastics last night, and one of her best friends from school was there, they were so excited to see each other! I was talking to the girlโs mom, and they will be in the same kindergarten class, so at least I know dd will have a friend there.

I wonder if he has some husky in him. Donny was a big puppy and when we got his DNA results I was looking up the breeds and apparently Husky puppies grow very quickly until 6 months and then more slowly until 12-18 months whereas other breeds grow in a more linear fashion for the first 12-18 months. And it made sense because he was huge for his age until about 6 months and then it got more normal.
I know this is an unpopular opinion but I really donโt like fall! I donโt love hot weather but I like seeing things alive and in bloom. Fresh local produce! The beach! Picnics! Hammocks! Sandals!
Fall leaves are pretty for like 3 days then everything is dead and brown for the next six + months. I donโt like pumpkin spice, I donโt care about Halloween, I donโt like it getting dark earlier, I donโt like being cold. I donโt want to bring a sweater.
Fall and Halloween stuff seems to come out earlier and earlier! Summer isnโt over for another three weeks. Let me have this lol

My husband is picking my son up from school right now to take him for a COVID and strep test. Ugh. He's been doing remote school for 1.5 years and this is just his third week back in the schools. He is vaccinated.

Our rescue has a private FB group for adopters and one of his littermates already sent away the DNA. I am sooooo excited to find out what he is! I was talking to my BFF Irish Wolfhound's dad this week and he gained a half a pound a day. There is no way our dog will be that big but it's nuts that these babies can grow so fast!

I made the most delicious chocolate chip zucchini bread yesterday. I wasn't going to buy turbinado sugar just for this one recipe, but I did and it is soooooooo good.
And now I remember why I don't bake more. I keep sneaking back to the kitchen. LOL
It is DS1โs first day of high school! Itโs a big transition - our town is all smallish k-8 schools that feed into a single large high school. Our k-8 is literally directly across the street from our house and I am PTO chair so itโs always been close, familiar, seeing me and his brother sometimes during the day etc. Heโs so grown up- my little guy!! ๐ข๐ข
Why is choosing a toaster so hard? Our toaster is about 5 years old and has started toasting very unevenly, like I've been having to flip things upside down and switch sides and toast again and I'm tired of it. I could just order the same one ($45) and get another 5 years out of it, but I thought let me see if there's anything better now. Every single toaster has SUCH mixed reviews lol.

First of all, that was my morning outfit and I have since changed into my harvest overalls and straw hat.
I've been drinking pumpkin drinks for a month already ๐
Someone on my neighborhood FB page made a comment on a Covid thread along the lines of "we all die eventually of something, can't live in fear, blah blah blah" and someone replied "Full offense, this is the stupidest thing I've ever read." and now I want to be friends with her.

Ha!! I was picturing that woman counting down the days to September 1st so she could bust out the sweater, weather be damned.
I know that I should go outside and do a little work on the courtyard or out back, since there is still work to be done before we get our pavers installed some time this month, but I am tired of working outside in the heat.
We got so much work done while DH was off last week, and I was hoping to get as much of the courtyard related stuff done that I could do on my own this week, so that DH could have a break when he is off again next week. I got a lot done on Monday, but I've lost my momentum. After making a list of everything we did last week, I can see why..it was a long list of very physical work that we did in the heat.
The more we get done, the more we think of that we want to do, and it nearly always winds up being something that needs to be done before the pavers are installed. I am really glad the pavers haven't been delivered/installed yet though...it should be exactly what we want once they're done, and we will get to sit back and enjoy it, without more projects.
Who am I trying to kid...there will always be more projects. lol
I think we're down to only two more projects that involve digging though, so that's something.
