tamarindy , I know that is the reason why. But also, WHY?? I would go somewhere cooler not hotter in the summer, but whatever. DH and I both grew up with family in Florida. He went for Thanksgiving, and we always went for either spring break or winter break. We never went in the summer.
Although, I am also not a week at Disney type person. I'll go a day or 2, but 8 days at Disney, don't understand that. ETA- also my co-worker came back totally ill from Florida although she tested negative for Covid.

Hey, I totally hear you. My H and I leave every summer for two months and go to NC, Colorado, etc. And I don't really Disney unless my friends are walking me in for free to drink around Epcot. But there are plenty of people who are absolutely batshit over the mouse.
Eh, I see the point of this article, but it seems like recording by date of death makes most sense anyway, even if it results in a slight delay.
My FIL just passed away in FL last week, NOT due to anything COVID-related, and I’ve been making a lot of the notification phone calls — literally EVERY state and federal agency has asked for the date of passing and if it was COVID related or not. Seems pretty standard across multiple agencies.

Texas is so awful right now too (for a variety of reason, this just being one of them). I can think of 17 people just off the top of my head that have Covid right now. All people that I personally know well... not just friends of friends or anything. Two are in the hospital. Two are about 70, but the rest are under 50 (mostly mid-20s to mid-40s). 5 of them are children.
One is my sister-in-law, who is an unvaccinated elementary school teacher. Both of her sons tested positive last week, and she was told to take a rapid test and if it was negative, to come to school the next day because they didn't have any available subs. She did, it was negative, she went back to school. Over the weekend, she started feeling sick and took two more rapid tests - both negative. She finally insisted on a PCR test, and it was positive. She's doing okay for the most part for now. I don't know the mask status of her school.
The whole thing makes me unbelievably angry on so many levels - at her, at the school, at the state government. I don't live there anymore but did until 3 years, so almost everyone I know is there. I just can't believe how crazy it has gotten.

Additionally, if you have family who snowbird in FL, you may want to talk to them about not coming this year. There simply isn’t enough room in our hospitals and healthcare providers are exhausted.
Our school district actually just voted for a mask mandate (shocking) but if I wasn’t already attending professional school in person with $$$ committed, I’d seriously consider moving out of state. Not just because of covid but covid has absolutely brought a lot of issues to the forefront.

It's hot and its sticky, I said today that Florida is a big bowl of covid soup. I am hoping that the mass of people moving here are democrat voting and well... I found out last week a guy I dated passed away from Covid. Perfectly healthy guy, not overweight, not a smoker, Deathsantis supporter.

DeathSantis did deliver a minor miracle. My dad criticized a republican! He even called him an idiot and appreciated my email calling him DeathSantis.
Dad and his wife spend hurricane season up in a condo in Maine and usually return in October. Dad is pretty worried, even though their condo is a very safe place to be with everyone vaccinated, and their boat is at the condo building's dock, so they can still get out safely. He's apparently eligible for a 3rd shot when he returns and thinks his wife will be, too.
In 2016, NC voted out our POS republican governor by <1%. If Pat McCrory had stayed in office, we'd be in the same place as Florida. I'm not at all enthusiastic about how our Dem governor is handling things (letting all school masking decisions be local for 2021-2022), but I am completely confident that McCrory would be killing teachers and students like DeSantis is. I am terrified that something could happen to our Governor and the Lieutenant Governor would be instated because he is worse than DeSantis.
It sucks that this is our country.
I am so mad at governor cooper. I called almost everyday before school started because his “hope” that schools would mandate masks was bullshit and he was leaving behind rural red districts. We went to school with optional masks and in 4 days there were 14 cases and 144 kids on quarantine. Our district had an emergency meeting after those 4 days and voted for masks but we are still feeling the affects. Last school year my school only had 5 positive case being open from October to june. In 1.5 weeks this year my school has had 8 cases.

From what I'm seeing, these masses of people are moving to Florida specifically because they don't want to adhere to any Covid restrictions. :-(
We have tons and tons of families moving to my area. I've stopped even asking people what brought them here. It's the same story every time.
As a New Yorker, I can attest to this from my perspective. No one here who has moved or has said they want to move to FL is left of center by any stretch. I feel like DeSantis knows he had to replace dying Floridians with Trumpians (because they aren’t Romney Republicans either…) for their votes, hence why he’s sticking with these decisions. It’s morbid to consider but him digging his heels in like this at the expense of his constituents makes no other kind of sense. So, I’m sorry you are being deluged by mostly terrible new residents.

Yes. A lot of the people moving down here are certainly not the best and brightest. Sigh.
My exH wants to move to FL for this reason and I say good riddance. Sorry that you all would have to deal with him though. He thinks that "his people" are in FL.

Sadly, they are. I keep looking for a way out but it’s almost impossible when you’re self employed.

I never understood the 8 days either. Now I'm all for it because the place is toddler-proof and very disability-friendly for someone with walking issues. Like I never have to climb any steps or navigate rocky or questionable terrain while I'm there. As for the toddler-proof part, there are an abundance of options to entertain and feed my still young kids so less thinking , less stress, and very easy decision making for me. On the flip side, they also have many overpriced fancy hotels and restaurants targeted to drain your wallet which is exactly up my husband's alley when going on a vacation. So it's simply the best place for me at this point in my life.
That said, I am cancelling my reservations for Jersey Week and the winter break. I tentatively made them back at June when people started acting like COVID was over. I'm not flying anywhere for leisure with my unvaccinated kids to begin with. A few years ago, I was on vacation with my family and I ended up in the ER and was wheeled straight to the ICU. It is so terrifying to think what might have happened if that had not been the case. I'm not taking my family somewhere the news reports say that the ERs and ICUs are full.

But the irony of this is that they'll come, possibly (probably?) contract Covid and then possibly die!
Knowing the Turtle is trying to encourage Kentuckyins to get vaccinated now, I do wonder if a lot of these dipshit GOP reps realize they kind of shot themselves in the foot by so whole-heartedly backing Trump. By jumping on his politicizing bandwagon, it's THEIR constituents who are largely being affected.
While the death toll is sad, it makes me laugh too. Such fools.
I do think there are good people in EVERY state and many of them can’t vote out their extremist politicians because they’re gerrymandered to hell. (We also have stupid, evil people in every state.)
But California’s little attempt to throw its weight around kind of amuses me, even though I doubt any of these states care that much.
Florida, your public health department in conjunction with the CDC just hired a public health doctor (PhD) to tackle "Vaccine Hesitancy and COVID Misinformation" in your state. I know her, she is legit. I got chills reading her update and feel hopeful for you guys.I can't find anything to link here but if she posts an update, and I'm sure she will, I will post it.

She’s definitely got her work cut out for her but I’ll take some time to be optimistic.
Like some of the above posters, I have family who moved from Jersey down to Florida so that their kids wouldn’t have to mask or be vaxxed. Not surprisingly, they hear very little from their cousin just a mere two hours away.

Over 50% of the state is D. The last several elections have only just BARELY gone to the Rs with massive voter suppression efforts underway. There are more sane people here than idiots — the idiots are just, well, louder I guess. And they ruin everything for the rest of us. But this IS, at its heart, a blue state. I keep reminding myself that. If everyone was allowed to vote, FL would go to the Dems.

Let me guess, Freedum and no state tax?
Pretty much. No mask mandates, no vaccine requirements, and a governor who says he won't "muzzle" his kids by putting them in masks all appeal to these people. Plus wanting their kids in in person school, which I do sympathize with.
