How is it and how does it compare to Orlando? We would like to go soon-ish but I don’t see me going anywhere near Florida for awhile. Is California as good? Are they basically the same?

I’ve been to both. The Orlando version is significantly larger. It has two sections in 2 parks, including Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, as well as the Hogwarts train, which you can ride. Hollywood only has Hogsmeade, and it’s smaller than the Orlando Hogsmeade. It doesn’t have the Hagrid roller coaster or the train. It’s still fun, and well done, but it’s much smaller. Universal Hollywood is much smaller overall than Universal Orlando. It does have the studio tour though, which Orlando doesn’t have.
This spring we took DS there for his birthday. We hadn't been to universal orlando since 1994, when BTTF still had a ride.
It's very very very busy, and HP world is the most popular area even at rope drop. I would plan on two of your *must have* rides and do those first, anything else is a plus.

I’ve only been to Hollywood and it’s the part of Universal we enjoyed the most out of anything there. It probably only takes about 2-4 hours to do everything in the HP area depending on lines. The whole park is manageable to in a day.
