Supposedly my great uncle was in the mafia. They had the nicest house on the block, owned multiple high end cars and no one ever discussed his job. It could be family lore. It’s my dads side and they were very disconnected. My dad only saw his uncle a couple times. Him and his brother have no relationship etc. my family pretty recently emigrated and after ww2 much Of our family disappeared. My grandad never talked to his family again. My grandma lost contact with her family as many went to the English countryside during it etc. so I have no clue!
Someone in my immediate nuclear family went to jail for B&E/Drugs Someone else is in jail for murder And in the 80s, a cousin was on the FBI most wanted list for major international drug dealing. he has left the country and written a book about it, since. We used to do family vacations to his estate out of the country. Instead of chocolates on the pillows there were blunts, lol.

My brother served time in federal prison for a gun charge. He tried a low speed car chase to get away from border patrol. He is no longer welcome in Canada as a result, lol.

My h’s family is weirdly secretive about, like, everything to the point that my MIL casually mentioned one of her brothers (deceased) that h had never heard of before last year and h’s reaction was “oh, huh.” When I started working on his family’s genealogy I quickly discovered that his great grandfather was killed when he came home and found h’s great grandmother in bed with another woman. The two men shot at each other and h’a ggrandfather was killed and possibly killed the other man. Obviously he wasn’t convicted since he was dead. This was nearly 100 years ago and MIL acts like it is some shameful secret that we must all keep. She called to tell h about it after I told her I was working on their genealogy but I had long ago found the news articles. These are the stories I enjoy finding because it makes the work interesting.
His 3x g grandfather also served jail time for stealing in the 1870s. Not sure how far back you wanted to go lol.
Legend has it that my great-aunt on my dad's side was a bootlegger and brothel madam during Prohibition/Depression. She was arrested and convicted a few times. But she rallied!
my great grandmother was too but to the best of my knowledge never arrested

Not that I know of, though it wouldn't surprise me if there was something back a bit further or more distantly of which I'm unaware. I have one cousin that did some pretty awful stuff - I think mostly drug-induced - he used to beat up his parents and destroyed one or two of their homes, so it wouldn't be shocking if that extended outside of his actual home. My whole family is very hush-hush religious right(eous) though so I'll probably never know and don't much care, ha. He seems to be on the right track now from what I understand.
My great grandfather was arrested for bootlegging. I found out when googling his name and stumbled across an old newspaper article. I'll try to find the link...

The "joke" in my family is that I'm the black sheep because I've never been arrested, have no addiction issues, and am a productive citizen. I had a really fucked up childhood and people I know now would be shocked at where I came from.
My dad has had 3 DUIs. Never did time but did have his license suspended and then whiskey plates for a year.
My cousin is a Mpls cop who had been investigated for threatening POC. When George Floyd was murdered, you can be sure I checked to see if he was involved.

I answered yes, but the crimes in my family, that I know about anyway, are all from my generation (first cousins and step-siblings). Non-violent, but serious felonies. I'm not counting misdemeanor/drug possession type convictions from our collective highschool days.
My mom, dad and brother have been in jail a few times on drug related charges.
A cousin of mine was arrested and charged with assault, but I don’t think he ever served time.
H’s cousin has been in prison for child porn charges more than once. H and I cut him off and want nothing to do with him. The rest of the family thinks we’re being too extreme or “cruel” for not embracing him and enabling him. 🤷♀️ Oh well. Too bad.
TW and PDQ I just found out this summer that DH’s aunt’s boyfriend was in jail for rape. I felt creepy around him the first time I met him and now I get why. He raped his own daughter. Creep. My brother had a DUI and my ex BIL was in jail for breaking and entering and a DUI. He also sold a lot of drugs where I grew up.
I am aware of some, but when it comes to my father's family, I would be guessing. I remember asking my Granny what her mother's name was, and she refused to tell me. She said she had never known, but I did not buy that even as an 8-year-old. I do know that I had a great-great-grandmother that had to be locked in an attic, because she was so dangerous, so I imagine there was some conviction or at least arrest that led to this situation.
