We all have RSV. I think I’m dying. Also I had no idea adults could get RSV this badly. My immune system is inexplicably totally shot.
I'm sorry you're sick. My mom got RSV recently and it kicked her ass. She was pretty sick for 2 weeks and got pneumonia on top of it. I hope you feel better soon!

My kids don't start school until Monday. On Friday, we finally got teacher assignments, and I learned that Pre-K students have different schedules that first week. DD2 is only going to school on Monday and Tuesday for only 1.5 hours and then 3 hours on Wednesday and Friday (schools are closed for Yom Kippur on Thursday). Because of that, she can't use the aftercare at school either like DD1 can use starting on Monday. I purposely cancelled my vacation days this week because I wanted to have days in the bank for quarantines, but now it looks like I'll need to take some more time off next week, sigh. Work is letting us work from home again and I might actually take up the offer for next week too, at least partially. I swore I didn't want to work from home again when either kid was home but I also don't want to take so much time off. Ugh.
I don’t even know how to explain how bad communication is at my kid’s school. School starts tomorrow, but Wednesdays usually start an hour later, but an hour later than what, I’m not sure. He started middle school last year, but for obvious reasons, we never got to a full school day.
On the website, they list office hours on the main page and the hours students are allowed in the building, but not when the actual start and end times are.
Oh, there’s a “bell schedule” listed on the drop down menu.
Okay, it lists the periods for last year’s distance learning schedule.
Maybe the start times is in the newsletter? Newsletters are a link sent via email. The link takes you to that particular newsletter, with no way to switch between newsletters. So if the info you need us not in the most recent one, start searching your email for past links and hope it’s one of them and you didn’t delete it.
Yay! A schedule for the first week. No indication if this is the normal schedule. But unlike other Wednesdays, this week is no late-start. I predict a lot of kids are going to be an hour late because it’s the only place that info seems to be listed.
Reach out to mom friends. Aha! The regular schedule is in the parent portal that’s different than the district website or the school website or the newsletter hosting site. The newsletter hosting site is different than the school flyers site, which mostly seems to be spam for various $$ after school programs.
Oh! It looks like maybe I can get his class schedule on the parent portal. No, not available yet. But I hear from another parent that her kid found hers in Google classroom.
His shows his core teachers, but no electives. At least he knows his homeroom. Phew.
We decided not to bus until he’s fully vaccinated and we’re past the surge. But just in case, I want to look up the times. I have an email from the district letting me know there’s a convenient new website for transportation, but first I’ll need to get his student info from the parent portal. This website is not available on mobile devices.
The newsletter with the first week schedule also has a long list of school supplies. In a separate section, it lists school fees with the option to purchase the school supply kit, presumably this means I can just pay and not go shopping? I hope so, cause that’s what I did.
School fees are linked from the school website. Good, good. The website explains to me that this is a very convenient way to pay all district and school-related fees. The website then explains to me I have to go to a different website and register a different account to pay for school lunches. Back to the newsletter that lets me know that school lunches are free this year, but I guess that might come in handy next year? Assuming it’s the same service. I think we’re on payment website #3 since he started school.
By my count I have 7+ email sign ups and accounts for this year. Plus whatever communication his teachers prefer: class dojo, etc. This doesn’t count the abandoned apps and websites from previous years. So far, each one has promised to be a convenient way to receive all necessary communication, supplanting the previous method. Then I think they just choose a method at random.

Our school just posted on Facebook they quarantined a whole grade (not my kid’s). If it is like other posts, the email went out about 10 minutes later.
They also posted car line procedures on FB that contradict their student handbook and emails. I’m following the FB ones because they are earlier. But if I’m late—I’m going with the email. Either way, pick up takes 45 minutes.
We get free lunches school-wide but they can buy ice cream, so I loaded ice cream money. My youngest got told by his teacher that he must bring cash—he loses everything so that is a bad idea. He got in the car last week and told me he got secret ice cream (ie, didn’t tell the teacher and went to the lunch lady directly). I’m not sure if I should be appalled or impressed.

I need to start shopping for Halloween costumes....especially since the supply chains and shipping are so messed up this year. Any recs? 5 & 7 YO girls... We've done Pottery Barn a lot in the past, but not seeing anything I like this year.

Target is just starting to put theirs out but I think they are on their website already. My 9 year old wants to be an astronaut, not sure where I am gonna find that costume in her size. Halloween gets harder as they get older.
My youngest is reusing her sister's old "box of donuts" costume, lol
Random question: does your elementary school have enrollment fees? My friend was shocked that we pay $80ish a year in enrollment fees. The title 1 schools don't charge the fee but obviously there are families at all the schools where the $80 would be a hardship. I also have to pay it for my 4 year old who gets speech through the school district. I don't understand why but I pay it so it doesn't get sent to collections (happened to a friend)

(Try looking for a guinea pig costume for a 10 year old. I think the only one I've found is marketed mostly to furries. But I won't be telling her that).

No.
There is a "suggested donation to the school foundation" upwards of $1,500 per kid as well as PTA dues of about $30. School bus rides cost more than $600/year/child. And the school doesn't even participate in the national free lunch program, so we won't be getting the free lunches that California supposedly will provide all students next year.
But no *required* enrollment fees. And all supplies are provided.

What do they like to dress up as?
We've done Disney, princess, unicorns, butterflies and cats in the years past.

I bought BB's costume from Little Dress Up Shop - no glitter and it can be reused as her play/dress up clothes after.
It's not just princess - they have other pretend play costumes as well.

Not in Texas (or at least in the districts around here). We pay all the property taxes though! There's PTA and a million random things you can sign up for (birthday library books, year book pages, fundraisers, etc.)
Bus was apparently lost? this morning. Was told they didn't know where it was, but then showed up 10 minutes after school started. Never got the whole story from DH.
Afternoon bus at end of day had no ETA. Did eventually show up.
Teacher sends email scolding parents that didn't send charging cord. Except no emails from last week said to send it. It just said to send a fully charged device. So confusing. Guess she'll take her charging cord tomorrow morning as well.
Also still waiting on the PTA flyer that I designed, printed, and sorted into mailboxes last week to come home...

DD wants to be a baseball player which is amazing because we already have everything. She has an Astros shirt, orbit socks, hat, and leggings all ready to go. All I need is black under eye paint and done.

My daughter has dressed as a baseball player the last few years. She wears her brother's uniforms, so easy!
My son dresses as a baseball player in the off-season. Basically a jersey with shorts 😂
pugz, we only have to pay to join the PTA, no other fees at the elementary level. I'm pretty sure MS and HS have fees for stuff though.
neverfstop, Costco had costumes out, but not that many. Last year mine was a rainbow unicorn from Target. It was basically a dress up dress with a unicorn and rainbow, pretty tulle skirt, and unicorn headband.

Not that they call an enrollment fee. There’s an activity fee ($5) and a student body fee ($5), and various elective fees ($20 art supplies, $15 for the engineering class supplies, etc) but there’s a PTA fund to cover those if needed.

No enrollment fees for public school. There are school supplies you have to buy and I THINK maybe a technology deposit for grades 6-12 (not entirely sure). You are encouraged to join PTO ($20) but it’s not required.

This was new to me here! $15 per kid. Plus $20 for technology insurance.

No, we don’t have enrollment fees.
We have a $25 technology insurance fee $50 per family fee to join the PTO And roughly $150-$200 per kid in school supplies with no program for those who can’t afford them that I’ve heard of.
And our district doesn’t participate in the national school lunch program, so lunches are $7-$8+ a day if you buy because everything is sold a la carte.

No mandatory or enrollment fees at the elementary schools my kids went to.

What sort of school supplies do you have to buy?! And I thought $60 for the kit was a lot of money.
Also why don't they participate in the lunch program? Do you have free/reduced lunch for families that need it?

It’s insane, our list is super long and all brand-specific. It includes different things by age group, but it includes cleaning supplies for the classrooms, binders and folders and calculators for older grades, and things that were provided when I was a kid. There’s a huge list for art class with supplies that at one point were provided by the district.
Quite honestly, a lot of our costs relate to Chris Christie deliberately defunding schools. Our property taxes aren’t going up as rapidly in theory because schools aren’t funded as well as they were. So more and more of the cost has shifted to parents or classrooms simply go without.
I honestly have no idea why we don't participate in the lunch program, nor do I know what we do for families in need. We’re a tiny pre-K-8 district with fewer than 800 kids total and I suspect based on home prices that we have very few who qualify for free lunch.

Our Iowa district was $100 last year. None this year posted, $97 in 2019-2020. And only 1 child has been charged the fee this year. The schools don’t mention this… I’ve only stumbled upon it in the parent portal and multiple clicks. No email reminders or correspondence from school (we are not title 1 either). So I dunno the deal.

No enrollment fee (FL). The PTA membership is $5 per year, and all mandatory school supplies cost maybe $20-25. Pre-COVID there were field trips or other activities that cost maybe $5/kid suggested donation. They are VERY conscious of low-income families and no child is turned away from an activity for inability to pay.
Also why don't they participate in the lunch program? Do you have free/reduced lunch for families that need it?
Our school doesn't participate either and it's because the PTA gets a 75 cent kickback on every lunch purchased (with lunches costing $7-12). While most families can definitely afford lunch, (home prices avg. above $1k/sqft) there are definitely students who can't (there is are a few low income housing developments in district.) They get lunch for free, but can only order the most basic versions. The principal is actually really good about things like this and makes sure to order free yearbooks for those specific kids.

We have/had activity fees, usually $10 - $20. I didn't see anything this year. If I had to guess, school supplies were around $25 this year. Nothing crazy though. The PTO has a big fundraiser each year, so we partake in that. When we had field trips, there was always an option to sponsor or donate to a family that was unable to pay.
In MN, so we pay property tax that includes school funding. There is a referendum this fall, and I am starting to research how I can get involved.

Charter in Florida. Two pages of school supplies (so about $75/kid) plus a $50/kid supply fee. PTO is $30+. Field trips are about $15/kid/trip. We joke that if the school can find a way to charge, they do.
We were at a Title 1 charter before. Lots of supplies required (but all communal so no one knew who didn’t bring them), no supply fees, free PTO, and field trips were minimal.
Both schools are the same area and serve similar students. We all get free lunch due to the community provision.
