DD, DS2, and I watched last night. Billy Porter did an amazing job. I loved this telling of the story all the way down to how they handled the step mom/step sisters part. Such a great message for girls and boys. DD kept saying "That's the song from Stranger Things" or "That's from Ella Enchanted". No, DD they are from the 80s, the songs of my youth.

I was looking at the cast list and was very confused because Missy Elliot is listed as the Town Crier and I thought I missed her, but I guess Doc Brown wound up in the role instead. He was great, but I would have loved to see Missy in the role.
I thought it was good (no kids in the household). I enjoyed the music. Parts of it were a little hokey/cheesy, but that is the nature of this type of movie. I'd say it's worth the watch even if you don't have kids at home. I did love Billy Porter as Fab G!
Why do people hate James Cordon? It’s trending on Twitter and always all over Reddit.
Him being a straight man playing a gay man in the prom, using crass gay stereotypes is one reason. Bring culturally insensitive on the show “spill your guts” was another.
Also, sometimes the carpool karaoke car is towed not driven. I’m not sure why that last one drives people so nuts, but it does!

I live under a pop culture rock and am bummed to read the first part of this. I guess I don’t care about the second part.

Thanks, I’ll check it out. They don’t elaborate much, so it was very hard to find the end of the Reddit chain. Some have also mention that he’s also a snot to people who work on his show.
I guess I’m the odd man out.. we watched it this afternoon and I hated it. DD thought it was amazing though.
I haven’t seen it yet but the review in The Atlantic just slammed it. It might be good for kids (IDK) but it said that the characters were completely flat and one-dimensional, like the producers were trying to make it feel of the moment — and failed to add any actual depth.

The general jerkiness is what I had heard - that he’s difficult, self important and unkind in general. Not at all a genuine nice guy like you hear from other celebrities.
I watched part of it last night and it's really good! I like a lot of the changes to the original story, and the music and dancing are amazing. James Corden has such a small part so I hope that doesn't deter anyone.
Overall I liked it. The best part was the music. The beginning wasn’t that exciting.
The parts I didn’t like was that it leaned hard on the patriarchal aspects like women can’t have their own business. I didn’t see why that law couldn’t be changed in the movie since that was a big scene. It seemed a bit bootstrappy rather than deal with systemic issues. Which they wouldn’t have had to deal with, but the movie brought them up. It was just very much in your face well you’re a woman so you can’t do anything- oh look she did something. But none of the other women could. That part annoyed me.

I disagree. I feel they had to go hard on it because of how problematic Disney princesses are in general. Beauty and the beast glorifies stockholm syndrome ffs.
There's also a transfeminine actress. Count Wilbur.
I really couldn't care less about the characters. It's a fairytale. I just enjoyed it for the music.

It’s probably because they still make studios money, but maybe we need different stories instead of trying to remake problematic ones?
They get less problematic with the remakes but there are still core issues. Like she was still imprisoned in Beauty and the Beast in the remake but only for a second to make it “better”. Lol it’s still a problem just a slightly better one.
They did try hard, and the casting was good. Maybe I’ve just moved on from the Disney Princess idea in general.

Ok, I just started this, and I may get flamed for this, but Camila Cabello is not a good singer. I’m not sure I can watch a whole movie with her singing.

Her voice isn't my favorite. I fast forwarded through a lot of her singing lol. The rest of the music is so good though.

Per Reddit, he’s a complete diva and asshole in real life.

Yes, I've heard many accounts that he's basically an asshole despite the persona he plays on tv

To be fair to Disney, many of these fairytales long predate their animated movies. I found a used book in England that had the original (translated) Grimm's fairytales. They're pretty twisted. In Cinderella one stepsister cuts off her toes to fit in the slipper, and the other cuts off her heels. Snow White, the evil queen is actually her mother who sends someone to kill her so she could consume the heart and liver to stay young and beautiful.
I get being over Disney Princesses. My favorite Disney movie when I was a kid was Sword in the Stone, not any of the princess stuff. I'm also the kid who burst into tears when my parents tried to get a photo of my sister and me with Minnie. Younger sister loved it. I was terrified. Not a good look for Florida born and raised.
I know the history. The original stories were extremely graphic, twisted and gross. I get they are part of history but it was a different time and maybe they were used as cautionary frightening tales back then? Not sure on that part.
