I wish people actually recognized the benefits of the labor movement. And what it represents.
And then I came across this quote from Jay Gould in 1880 something: “I can hire one half of the working class to kill the other half.” So close to that asshole saying he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue. 🤬
But, on a random note - we started a rewatch of Breaking Bad. Such a good show. But also,so dystopian about the US healthcare system. When you have to cook meth to pay for cancer.
I hate that so many businesses choose top be Op open in Labor Day. Service workers deal with terrible people every day and they tend top be worse on holidays. Companies say people like working them...but they get this by offering either overtime pay or a floating holiday.
I hated Breaking Bad because it is an ego trip, Walter White had advantages most do not.

Yes on the open stuff. I was thinking that seeing so many places advertising they are open.
and I hear you on the ego trip part. I remembered him being that way in the end, but I’d forgotten that he is an ass from the get go. Actually, so many horrible people.

I'm spending labor day working because I have such a long list of things I didn't finish last week, thanks to a major work emergency on Fri.
It isn't like I want to work on the weekend, but it's the only time I get to work uninterrupted. And it sets up the upcoming week to be much less stressful.

Jobs suck sometimes.
I’m so sorry. I’m not working because I’m incredibly sick, but I was out of work the latter part of last week and won’t be well enough to work full throttle this week and I’m dreading everything building up.
Labor Day and I texted my new boss that I have pneumonia and will only be able to do essential work tasks tomorrow and Wednesday. To her credit she told me to take off and rest but she and the rest of them will be riding me when things don’t get done because I’m the only person left to do them. Sigh.

I rewatched this summer (although I’m pretty sure I rewatch every summer lol). Yet I still have things I want to talk about!
Kind of a spin off of Breaking Bad. Only because it TV.
H dropped the TV the other day when he was trying to hook up something audio while watching Tv. The screen got all messed up. So, new TV for us. And we are again at the point where we need to rent a 25 year old boy to explain everything to us. Ugh…overwhelming. And I guess we have become our parents.
And it’s complicated by out wall unit stuff. Which fits a 50” TV perfectly. But, the 50” seems a bit small for the way our new living room is set up. And IKEA doesn’t have the horizontal Billy shelf anymore. So we picked up some other pieces to extent the horizontal span from 4 feet to 6 feet. Which H now feels we must fill with TV. Ugh… I agreed to go to 65”. Now he is all “80 will fit!!” And since he sold his boat, extra car, and boat lift - he is all about spending money. Send a voice of reason!

rubytue, we are in the midst of shopping for a new TV as well. I feel your pain. My H's new thing is that the current TV stand is too small for the tv he wants, so we need to buy a new stand. Except, he won't just buy, he keeps asking my opinion, then telling me my choices cost too much.
I just keep shrugging my shoulders about it. I think our current (albeit pretty small) TV is totally fine. I'm just along to be the extra set of hands - though I'm certain I'll be tasked with setting everything up once he actually buys something.

rubytue we recently got a new TV, too. Ours is mounted above our fireplace and DH was on a ladder measuring how big we could go without being off the sides of the fireplace. 🤦🏻♀️ We ended up with 65” at my insistence. He wanted 75” but it was going to take up the whole opening and look ridiculous. Instead he got a 75” for our basement.
This week is going to be an utter shitshow. I'm pretty sure I'm working the equivalent of three jobs right now. A major project that is a job in & of itself (and which I worked most of the weekend on), supporting a virtual event next week; plus my regular job, which is also ratcheted up more than usual because a significant portion of my coworkers are out for one reason or another.
I need to let a whoooooole lot go this week. This is not something I am good at.

While we were 99% certain our house didn't sustain water damage from Ida while we were away last week, we did confirm when we came back that there was no damage at all to the house. While the house has never sustained water damage due to severe weather, I'm considering calling our home insurance company and asking about add-ons and what would work for us. I figure with storms being worse and staying this way, eventually our luck will run out. But I feel like the fine print is sooooo confusing and when a shitty situation happens, you find that it doesn't cover what you thought it would cover. Yes, I know that means we just have to read the fine print but I'm still worried.

Definitely do this. We didn't flood from floodwaters but the town sewer backed up into everyone's basement and we are going to have to pay for it to be professionally cleaned. We called our insurance and found out that sewer backup coverage is one of the things we opted not to pay for.

Ugh, I'm so sorry! And that's exactly what I mean about the confusion - there are so many different ways a home could be damaged by water, and I don't blame anyone for not realizing until disaster struck that not everything is covered.
We cleaned out the garage this weekend, and pulled out so much trash. I made my husband promise that he would listen and do it my way this time (vs his way of just shuffling stuff around). The second day we had to quit early because MIL decided to visit. On the third day, dh forgot his promise and stopped listening, at which point we had a fight. Which, honestly, is pretty good for us as we usually fight on the first day of a big project. LOL! Anyway, the garage is clean-ish. We have a bunch of stuff to sell, but I put an expiration date on that which if they don't sell we're donating them.
pixy0stix, we did a garage clean out, too. We only moved late June, so 2 months. I didn’t know it was going to happen until I cam back from the nursery and couldn’t pull into the garage. But, it’s better organized now. Because, two months ago we just threw stuff in.

The Jungle was on my bucket list for 20 years and I finally read it during lockdown last year. I was already very aware of the history of it but it’s so detailed about every aspect of immigrant life, working in Chicago in the late 1800s. I think it’s one everyone should read to renew their appreciation for Labor Day. I don’t buy the argument that workers have it so great now, as a reason for not improving things. Of course it’s better but there’s a ton of room for improving the quality of life, especially those in manufacturing or the service industries, starting with guaranteed hours, liveable wages and healthcare. The battle for $15 minimum wage has been going on for over a decade where COL is rapidly increasing.

They finally finished my new floor! Thank goodness!! We went 10 rounds with them on it because the work on the initial job was really shoddy and unacceptable and although I feel bad for being firm I’m happy I stood by insisting that they fix it. It looks soooo much better now.

Should I get an iPhone 12 once the 13 is announced next week or just get the 13? We don’t need to save the money, but I’ve always gotten older phones but now I kinda want the latest and greatest. But I vaguely recall issues with the newest iPhones in the past.
My phone contract is also up and I’m definitely moving to a new provider, if that matters. Help me be tech savvy!

I get the newest ones when I can and have never had a problem. Mine dying so I can’t wait until they announce!

Mine too! Exactly two years after I got it. Like clockwork. Should be enough to give up on Apple but they know how to make it hard to switch.

I’d go with the newest. I like to get the newest when I do it so it becomes obsolete last. While I often replace my own phone before its obsolete, we pass them around the family. My brother is currently using my old 7.

seeyalater52, hope you recover quickly. Your body is definitely letting you know that it's over stressed. I hope that eventually you can find a job that works better for you!

Just switch cold turkey. I did it, and I'm not ever looking back.
You mean you switched away from Apple?
I'm currently on Android and trying to decide if I want to make the leap to Apple so that I can get an Apple Watch and be able to Facetime people. Or if I just need to get a new Android smart watch because mine died.
If anyone can figure out how to make an android swipe backwards, I would switch. But either DH is clueless or it's not possible because I loathe his samsung with the fire of a thousand suns.
Perusing online, clicks on link, wants to swipe back, nope, have to hit some button at the bottom. Too lazy for all that.
The genius of Breaking Bad is that it is such a watchable show made up of really unlikable characters. I love it.
No Labor Day in the UAE, lol. Im sure some random holiday will pop up soon to balance. I'm frustrated because our resident visas still aren't back, so we now have to renew like...everything again for the month instead of buying stuff. Just can we be residents already?!?!
