2. WTF why couldn't this info been submitted a month ago? It will be too late for so many kids including probably mine since Covid is running rampant at school.
3. Why couldn't they have given us an actual factual date a month ago? We absolutely would have been more likely to keep up protective measures with an actual end date in sight. I mean this still isn't a real date but very close.
4. I don't believe them.
5. I will die mad that kids were not more of a priority.
Covid has done a real number on my mental state, lol.
Given the myocarditis side effects, I believe Pfizer was asked to add additional trial participants to ensure that the dose for children was appropriate/safe.
I am very impatient but this isn't just Pfizer and the FDA fucking around.
I have a kid with heart issues, so I am glad they are taking their time and getting it right.
Alternatively, I've thought about lying about his age at least 30 times (he's 11). I keep convincing myself to wait it out, but I get it, the wait has been excruciating.

Oh I realize this. Don't skimp on safety please. I didn't say any of my thoughts were rational just what they were. When your kid goes to school without a mask mandate and there is a new case every day in the school (if not 3-5) but you don't necessarily know where because there is no contact tracing it's hard to not be frustrated.
Here is another article with sources saying data from Pfizer should be available at the end of the month with authorization coming a few weeks after. I’ll still say mid-October looks possible.
5. I will die mad that kids were not more of a priority.
Do you mean not being prioritized in regards to the covid vaccine or just kids in general not being prioritized throughout the pandemic?
In regards to the vaccine from what I know I think things have been moving along fairly quickly. I think it's important to remember that medicine and vaccine trials that are aimed at a wide age range of people typically don't start with testing in kids only, just like they typically don't start in pregnant people or super immunocompromised people. The original data that pfizer collected (the data they submitted for the adult EUA) did include a small group of people as young as 12 though. Then, there was a concern about myocarditis. I honestly think there would be even less vaccine confidence for kids if the process were "rushed" more. All the acquittances that I know working in vaccine science are working their butts off and absolutely doing their best to prioritize kids. And as someone who is in a covid vaccine trial it's amazing how much work goes in to it and that they've been able to coordinate thousands of people being in a trial in such a short amount of time, it's truly unprecedented.
This makes me so excited and so furious. We only had to take measures for our kids for SUCH a short time. And we couldn’t do it. As it is, my kids are still likely to be in quarantine when the vaccine is approved.
We did EVERYTHING right. The ONLY thing my kids have done indoors with other people in the last 18 months is school. And they made it 12 days.
I am SO FUCKING ANGRY.
But also, so relieved and excited for everyone else. Honestly, with this news, if I was in Florida, Texas, Iowa, etc., I would likely pull my kids from school until it’s approved. School is dangerous. And when our kids are out, the extent of our education is “Check Schoology.” So they’re not learning anything anyway.
I don't think this means shots in arms this month. Or maybe even next month? I hope I'm wrong. I read the article and assumed "Soon" was the original sometime this month for Pfizer to submit and then weeks until the FDA approves. How are other people reading this?
There’s nothing new in this article. They’ve been saying for a while now end of Sept to submit for 5-12 year olds. I’m annoyed that this is basically the same thing over again, but I guess it’s good to know they are still on track and haven’t been delayed. But I need them to hurry up and just approve this damn vaccine for kids! I’m out of patience.
What about the 2-5yo crowd? They're talking 5yo and up, then infant to 2yo. I mean, I hope it's an oversight on the writer's part, but at this point info about kids has been so sketchy...
I read previously that the dose for ages 5-11y was 1/3 of the adult dose, and for ages 6m-4y was 1/10 of the adult dose. So I'm guessing that's how the approval age groups will go.
I have kids who are 2 and 5, so I'm cheering for 5-11 for one of them coming soon, but anxious af about my little guy who won't see it until 2022 I'm sure.

Let me rephrase. I’ll die angry at Greg Abbott. The vaccine is only part of it. He has actively made things more dangerous for kids.

abs, ahh ok got it. Yes specifically in TX and some other states I agree that kids haven't been prioritized, I thought you were talking just about the vaccine. So sorry you have to deal with that.
I’m going to remain optimistic. We could totally set up a mobile vaccination clinic in our neighborhood on Halloween. Free full-sized candy bar for every kid who gets a shot. Let’s just do this damn thing. 😂

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' ban on school mask mandates will remain in place as the measure faces legal challenges in court, an appeals court ruled Friday. The order reverses a judge's decision to put the governor's ban on hold.
I wonder if my pediatrician’s office will let me set an appointment with the date as “the first day that I can get my 5 year old vaccinated.”
Do they have Pfizer? We were at the pediatrician's office today and asked about it. She said they definitely won't have it there (they have Moderna, but no ultracold freezer), but she thinks there will be mass immunization events all over town, and the minimum age to get your shot at a random pharmacy will be waved (or handled somehow). I sure hope she's right.

I hadn’t even thought of that re: the pharmacy age requirement. I hope that they find a way around that for sure because it will be a mess if not.

This might happen here. Our health department might set up vaccine drives for each school. They did something like that for the teachers in the spring. I expect it will be a crazy month.
Can you imagine what those lines are going to be like? Tons of fussing and sobbing children trying to avoid their shots and then complaining and whining as they wait their mandated 15 minutes. It's going to be fun!

I am pissed off. My son does marital arts, and they are having a hell of a time w/ COVID cases w/ kids at the facility. We literally get a notice every 2-3 days of a kid testing positive. He was quarantined from the 3rd day of school on (he missed 6 days total b/c of weekends/holidays) b/c of an exposure on the last day of summer camp. They had virtual classes up until about a month ago, and they discontinued them at the fall schedule launch.
I sent an email a couple days ago asking if they were considering offering virtual classes again, maybe just a couple days a week, b/c of all of these exposures. No response. They include this bullshit language in the notification emails that even kids that were deemed a close contact, if they are vaccinated OR if they have a negative COVID test, can return to the center. I guess that's all fine and good EXCEPT neither the local health department, nor the schools, are going to accept that, and if my son returns to class (we haven't sent him back since the quarantine, he's missed 3 weeks of classes by this point) and is deemed a close contact AGAIN, he's going to have to quarantine AGAIN for 14 days. OMG.
I will lose several hundred dollars a month by not sending him. But I can't, now can I? What the hell do I do? Continue to keep him out? Send him and cross my fingers? Continue to push for the center to bring back some virtual classes?
I'm just so sick of ALLLLLLL of this shit. My area is highly vaccinated, and these kids coming up positive just continues and continues.

Clinics at schools would be such a gift for parents, otherwise clinics for working parents will be so hard…or will require lots of nights/weekends for staff. And I can’t imagine the poor office staff. “OK, these 3 kids are getting picked up at 9:45, these 2 kids at 9:50, these 12 at 9:55, etc.” Plus, kids likely won’t cry and carry on if they’re surrounded by their peers instead of their parents. For better or for worse, they won’t want their friends to see them lose it. [Edited to take out a dumb thought about parents not being there…I think I’m losing my mind! Of course that would never be an option, for a million different reasons!] Preschoolers aren’t eligible yet…they’d be the loose canons where one crying kid could lead to an avalanche of criers.
Come to think about it…If they do school clinics, I want to volunteer! I could help make it fun and less scary. Add some music and shenanigans and it could be quite a memory for kids! But at the same time, I could be a calm reassurance for the kids who are really nervous/scared. Don’t want to diminish those kids, either. Some kids have legit anxiety/fears, but I think the majority can be pretty easily distracted by a non-parent adult.
notsopicky, I’d keep pushing for virtual or pull him. We decided this year to sacrifice everything else in order to be able to keep the kids in school. (A lot of good that did…we made it 2.5 weeks before my oldest tested positive. He got it at school, guaranteed.)
If you decide to pull him, I’d fight really hard to get your money back. They’re not offering a safe option at this point. How many times will he have to quarantine for close contact before he tests positive? It’s just not worth it right now.

I assume any vaccine drives would be on weekends or after hours and require parents to be present with their kids.Tto give permission, to observe their kids for side effects, etc. But it would still be fantastic to have an organized way to get my kids vaccinated. Even if they are the ones melting down about it.

LOL there is no way they are doing vaccine clinics for minors without a parent/legal guardian present. I appreciate your enthusiasm though!

I'm sure it's just an oversight, but I had the same reaction. I said "uhhh, what about the 3-4 year olds?" and DH was like "I guess DS2 (4yo) is SOL."
This is from the posted article so people know where I'm getting this:
"BioNTech has said it expected to file its regulatory dossier on the five to 11 year olds in September. It has also laid out plans to seek approval in children aged 6 months to 2 years later this year."

Can you even imagine? What if they vaccinated a kid whose parents didn't want them vaccinated. It would be such a mess.
But also, nobody is giving my kid a vaccine without me present. I'm very rah rah about vaccines and will sign both kids up as soon as they are eligible, but you can bet I'm gonna be there when it happens.

True. LOL. Can one have Covid brain just because there’s Covid in the house? I think I’ve got that today/tonight.
Anyway…I’ll volunteer WITH the parents there!
I should probably get some sleep. And I edited out the part about parents not being there to not panic anyone else who reads this later! Nothing to see here, folks! Just a mom losing her mind over here! Carry on!

They had in school vaccination clinics for the middle and high schoolers in our area shortly after it got approved for the 12 & up crowd. They were even bussing kids from one school to another to get it done, so it's not a completely crazy idea. Not sure how well it would work for the younger kids though.
Maybe I'm a little too breezy in my parenting, but I'd let my kids get a vaccine at school without me present. They already do dental exams, eye exams, and the RN on staff has my permission to give OTC meds when needed.

Where I live they have school based vaccine clinics. Verbal consent over the phone is accepted. Obviously 12 and up is easier to handle than a 6 year old possibly, but there are absolutely places doing vaccines for minors without a parent physically present. My dad told me the same thing was happening in his school district where he lives when vaccine was approved for 12 up. His long term partner has a teenager so they gave verbal consent and the teen got vaccinated at school without a parent/guardian present.
Rules regarding minors being able to consent to their own vaccines vary by state, so that comes in to consideration as well.
