"When the first synchronous fireflies appear, sporadically flashing, they don’t seem, to my untrained eye, to be much different from common species that illuminate backyards across the country. But, as their numbers grow, expectant murmurs travel up and down the row of spectators. Instinctively, when hundreds of insects grow to be thousands — each appearing to light the one next to it, like a candle being passed — the crowd stands.
For a while, the insects’ rhythms remain a bit discordant, like that of an orchestra warming up. Scientists have found that the more individuals there are participating, the more in tune the insects get. Before long, there are so many of the species that it’s clear they’re working in unison. The effect isn’t a lights-on-lights-off situation, as I’d expected; it’s more like watching a human-born stadium wave, when members of a crowd incrementally lift their hands, swept into the fervor of something larger than themselves.
The insects are responding to each other’s light, working with their neighbors to find their role in the whole. From a distance, the activity appears as a shimmering current running through the forest from right to left: Whoosh. Then, darkness. Then again, a whoosh of light."
The whole idea of a large group of living creatures coming together, taking cues from each other's light and finding their roles from one another, where the larger the group, the more in sync they get. Because it is such a beautiful thought and I can't help but contrast it with the utter lack of concern/care for one another that so many humans are demonstrating, and given my stress level and lack of sleep right now, this was the straw, so I'm crying over fireflies.
I see it all the time on comments. And if I click on the persons name their profiles all look the same - some sort of American flag somewhere, along with a mention of trusting Jesus and voting for Trump. I am aware that this is not the case 100% of the time but it certainly feels like it on social media (with the random oil loving healthy living type thrown in)
YESSSSSS. It's so true. Telltale sign of a cult if I ever saw one.
A cult or a misinformation farm. Isn't that the kind of thing Russia was doing in 2016 (paying people to create lots of profiles to spread "alternative facts")? The flag & Jesus note could easily be part of the playbook for that.

I was coming to say the same and then I started to wonder if my tinfoil hat was on too tight. What even is real anymore? (An ironic post on a message board, I know.)
aurora , I had no idea that some anti-vaxxers were accusing the vaccines of causing variants. Wow.
Oooooooohhhh yes. I've seen this on social media a lot. It's vaccinated people who are causing the variants, and they're also the only ones getting sick. Seriously.
I know anti-vaxxers don't care about data, but I just don't understand how they can completely ignore it! Here is a graph showing hospitalization rates in our county since January in vaccinated versus unvaccinated people. The most recent data point shows a hospitalization rate of 0.09 per 100k for fully vaccinated versus 7.36 per 100k for unvaccinated.

To add, it's like how people hospitalized or dying of covid refuse to believe they have it, or their families refuse to believe they have it. I cannot even begin to understand that level of denial, nor do I want to understand.

And that's one way to identify bots. If they post nothing but political opinions and misinformation.

My company is mandating vaccines for all US employees and gave a date when unvaccinated will be unemployed immediately if their records are not updated. This is huge and the email we received was not sugarcoated. <3
Are covid vaccines available in primary doctor offices yet?
They are here, because we very recently started offering them on discharge with instructions to return to their physicians office in 3 weeks for their second shot.

Where I am and where my partner primarily lives they have been in many pcp offices since the spring. The ordering size and storage requirements still makes it difficult for places though.

Hmmm, does this mean I need to branch out beyond a politics board?

My H works for this company (we figured this out last year on Instagram lol!) and he was excited to get this email. He actually has a person his team that he works closely with (figuratively speaking - they are all remote) who is refusing to get the vax because.....reasons......and he thinks he is going to quit and try to find a different job. OK bye!
Biden requiring most feds to get vaccinated with no option for weekly testing. He also plans to require companies of 100 or more employees to be vaccinated or have weekly testing, affecting 80 million private sector employees.

I love it and I also hope it encourages my company to move toward full remote work so they don't have to deal with it lol I imagine it only applies to in-person work, but I could be mistaken.
I hope they vetted the shit out of the mandates. If so, giddy up.
This is really great for the sane people in red states especially.
SCOTUS has already ruled on at least one mandate, saying it's constitutional. I'm sure we'll see where it goes coming from a federal standpoint. That being said, I bet there's a wave of people getting vaccinated.
I'm super glad I'm not part of the enforcement arm on this. The administration is relying heavily on companies just complying. I'm sure there's about 50% of the businesses that won't do it until forced. What is even the penalty for not requiring vaccination?
Can I complain about feeling like crap here? I have watery, itchy eyes and nose, post nasal drip. congestion, a little coughing, lots of sneezing and I feel wiped out. One family member at home had the same symptoms last Wednesday. We got them a PCR test on Thursday and it came back negative on Friday.
My symptoms started this Tuesday but are definitely worse today. I went and took a PCR test this afternoon and then took an at-home rapid test. The result for the rapid test is negative. I won't know the PCR results until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest.
I'm fully vaccinated and I'm a militant mask wearer and social distancer. I'm going to be so pissed if the PCR test is positive. On the other hand, I had this thought earlier of "Oh! What if it's a cold? That's something I haven't had in 18 months."

Supposedly $14,000 per violation enforced by OSHA.
I only see that reference in random articles as of now. None of my usual sources are reporting that yet.
I wonder what happens to the employers that don't fall under OSHA (public sector employees of state/county/local govs).
Our state has mandates for school employees. They have not mandated county or local governments, but my thought is that is probably is coming at some point in time because the governor is pro mandates.
We do follow OSHA guidelines in my organization even if they are not technically overseeing us. It would be considered best practice.
