I was offered a new job today! I’m super excited. I will turn my 35 minute commute into 7 minutes and earn 35% more. It’s very nerve wracking but I’m ready to make the jump. I’ve worked at a state university for 10.5 years and it’s hard to leave. I could give 2-3 weeks notice bc I don’t start the new job for 4 weeks but have pre planned time off for the fourth week due to my kids fall break and going camping with them. I want to give 2 weeks bc I could actually have a few days to myself but I want to give 3 to be a good employee. Within the next two weeks I also have two dr appointments scheduled that will make me miss a few hours of work and a possible whole day off to go on a field trip with me dd so 2 weeks could actually be 9 days of work, not 10. At my university the normal notice is 2-3 weeks.

Give the two. Trust me. I once gave 4 months thinking I somehow owed my company something and it would ultimately matter. Spoiler alert, it didn’t matter. They just postponed hiring my replacement until the last three weeks anyways and I had zero time to train them. You do not owe them anything and should absolutely take the week for yourself.
I gave like 6 weeks last time to help close out a project I was working on. It was the right thing to do, but I wish I had taken that last week for myself. Give 2 weeks.
Two! Congratulations--sounds like an awesome change for you!
Once I left my job, I realized I put a lot of extra stress on myself out of a sense of duty or responsibility that was really not necessary or rewarded.

Congrats! Two weeks for sure. Those days to yourself will be so much more significant to you than a few extra days at work will be to your employer. Enjoy!
ETA: You said you wanted to give 3 weeks to be a good employee. But giving two weeks isn’t being a bad employee, at all.
I knew someone who scheduled a 9 day vacation. The day before she left, she gave notice. She came back for only one day to say goodbyes and wrap things up. So either option is better than that
Can you do 2.5 weeks. Make your last day a Tuesday or wed. Then you have a couple days to your self before the trip but dont have to feel bad about missing a day for the field trip.
Just emailed my boss my two week notice. She knew this was coming bc we talked on Friday. She responded saying this was a good move for my family, and she will miss me. Called me a superior employee and the only person who understood all the complex pieces of her job and can support her through it (I’m her executive assistant assistant).

I worked with (for!!) someone who left for a 9 day conference, fully paid for by the organization. His flight left Sunday morning. Friday night after COB he left his resignation letter on his boss’s desk. 🙃
Congrats, OP!! Enjoy your you time and well deserved break!

Stuff like this was happening so often at my employer that they made a rule that your notice can't include burning vacation time. It was just screwing coworkers left and right, so I get it.
