Our floor joists are only 2x8 on the second floor and they're like swiss cheese from the old plumbing. So the contractor is going to tear down the ceiling on the first floor and sister all the joists, glue, and install hangers.
Yay? There's also more major electrical that needs to be moved. All $$$.
Since we're tearing down half the kitchen ceiling (though we don't plan to renovate the kitchen for a couple years) this is an opportunity to install some recessed lighting in the space. I have incandescent recessed lights in an adjacent open space (family room) so I probably need to change those out to match. Those lights are 5"
Should I just go w/5"? I think my preference would have been 4" or less... I feel like I have to commit to a decision re my future kitchen reno
Here's a pic of the gutted space - there were 4 doors in the old space (you can see the harvest gold )
w/the new wall framed (10x10 space)
In the now smaller office space they started cutting the opening for the 48" french doors - we're closing the existing door
This is the little wall in the kitchen that's full of plumbing and electrical and is a major headache to remove.

You will barely notice the difference of a 4 inch vs. 5 inch round light. If there’s something else you don’t like about the ones you have, I’d consider switching them out with the same size. If you go from trim to trimless or round to square they’ll have to do some drywall work anyway so a change in size wouldn’t matter that much. You could keep the 5 inch and go smaller to like a 3 inch in an adjacent if they are the same shape, although smaller ones are typically grouped a little closer together where good task lighting is needed.
The little soffit thing kills me. You wish they could have found a better way when they first built the house!
