We’ve been a one car house since June but we don’t have kids. H sold his truck and has an order in on the new Maverick. We don’t know when we’re getting it. I wfh most days. H drops me off/picks me up on my days I have to go in. If I need the car I’ll drop off/pick him up. It’s worked for us.
We were a one car household until @@@@ our second kid turned 14 months. We made it work while it was just 1 kid with a lot of the accommodations you listed - walkable suburb including walking to the train for my husband’s commute and family close by that could loan us a car if really necessary. I was really proud that we lasted until my older one turned 5 but it really was a struggle that final year when we had 2 kids. I would work one Sunday a month and DD would have dance on Sundays at a location too far to walk so we were always shuffling with my parents to get her there since I need a car to drive the 30ish miles to work.
Since posting this, we've lived the true "one car household" life and acted as if we didn't have another one. We also listed it for sale mid October so we could give it a real go. In the month since I posted, we had one time where two cars would have been helpful- DD's TKD class got moved up an hour and I surprised H with golf that morning for his 40th. She ended up being an hour late to practice, but oh well... So it's definitely been doable.
And his car sold today, so we're doing this for real!
It's helpful that when we talked about it with friends and family that TONS of them said we could borrow their car if necessary. I don't foresee it being an issue, but it's nice to have a backup plan if push really came to shove.

That’s so exciting! I wish we could do it but DH’s schedule is too unpredictable and the kids’ school isn’t walking distance. There’s no buses and we still have one in a booster seat. If I was only driving a couple times a week, I would definitely do it, because taking a Lyft or Uber a couple times a week is way cheaper than owning a car. A friend of mine has no car and just rents one when she needs it, which was still cheaper, at least until this year when rental car prices skyrocketed.
I think you’ll be fine. Glad it’s gone and you don’t have to worry about it anymore!
When we first moved in together and DH got a job downtown and we got an apartment right on a major bus route we didn’t drive DH’s car for 5 months. I insisted he get rid of it since it was taking up our spot inside the garage and I was having to scrape snow off my car to go to work everyday.
He didn’t have a car for 8 years after that. I upgraded my commuter car to an SUV and we didn’t have a problem except for maybe a couple of times a year. We would borrow one of his parents cars or I would grab an extra car from the dealership where my Dads work. I still do that when I need a truck, lol.
We did make sure our house was also on an express bus route to downtown, so that limited our search area when we moved out to the suburbs.
DH switched jobs and no longer works downtown. We got the second car (just a tiny commuter) and now he’s WFH likely forever. We still need the second right now to coordinate daycare pickup, but that will be over in two years, and in the summer he mostly used the bike and bike trailer. We’re thinking we will go back to one car once daycare is done. Since I still have to drive into work most of the time I’m now driving the tiny commuter and the SUV is basically parked other than a 4km loop every day. We are saving so much money on gas and wear and tear. We were also able to drop our insurance costs a lot thanks to WFH. It will be great to get rid of the second vehicle entirely.
