jennybee1018 , you can switch to Korean audio with English subtitles.
I've watched through ep 4. The deaths are violent, but I don't find it particularly gory. Mostly single gunshots and instant death, at least through what I've watched (I assume it gets worse). It's the arbitrary nature of so much death that gives the impact IMO. I have found a few scenes to be unwatchable. Things like constantly flashing lights.
IANAP, so I can't answer the age thing. I'm personally on a break, and I'm not sure if I'll resume. Some things feel glacial. And some of the voice actors are terrible.
I did watch one of the tiktoks about translation issues. Some of the subtleties she points out I actually understood just from having lived there, even if I don't speak the language. I'm sure I miss the vast majority of them, though. And then there's pure laziness in the subtitles like writing Seoul University and leaving out National even when the voiceover says SNU. If you can't even do that correctly, what other bigger things to you fuck up?!
There’s actually a fix for the bad CC. In the Netflix settings, there are options for Korean Language with subtitles. But if you also have closed captioning for hearing impaired turned on, then the CC overrides the subtitles. Apparently, two different companies did the translating. The subtitle version is much more accurate than the closed caption version, so make sure you have the right one turned on.
also my question - is this a popular show in Korea?
I live in Korea. Yes. Everyone is losing their shit over this show for various reasons. I finally watched the first two episodes last night and now I finally understand some of what I’ve been seeing around my town.
My closest subway stop had an interactive Squid Game installation a couple weeks back. It was the same weekend as Korean Thanksgiving, so the heaviest travel day of the year. By 10am, word had spread and there were about 30K people in the subway and congested at street level trying to see it. That particular subway station is pretty small—about the size of a CVS or Walgreen’s, but 2 floors. Imagine 30k people in a Walgreens. The minister of health freaked out due to social distancing and by noon, they came in and ripped out the whole display. Almost caused a riot.
Also, remember early in the pandemic when Dalgona coffee was a craze? The coffee drink actually started in Singapore but it was named after the Korean street food, dalgona, because it tasted the same. It’s a crispy, burnt sugar candy. The honey comb in the 3rd episode was dalgona. And they do press shapes into it at street vendors. My son has played that game where you try to remove the shape at a birthday party when he was about 9. So if you ever tried dalgona coffee, now you know what the honey comb tasted like. The dalgona street vendors are experiencing renewed interest. Without tourists, many of the street food vendors are really suffering so this has given many of them a much needed boost in income.
‘’My son also told me that Squid is a really popular game that they used to play at recess when he was in elementary school. So far, the scenes about life outside of the brutal game is looking really accurate to me.
omg we’re watching episode 7 and these VIPs are distractingly bad actors. Just horrendously bad.
We had a conversation about this - it was so terrible. The rest of the show and the actors had been so good, and it felt cheapened by the terribleness of the VIPs.

I'm super late to this but I binge watched all 9 episodes last night and was up until 5:30AM this morning. I'm normally a person who hates blood, gore and violence but I found the show fascinating. I know many people who hated the ending, but I thought it was set up nicely for season 2.

Partner watched ep 6 and cried. And he rarely cries, especially for something on tv. I don't mind crying at tv, but I'm still not convinced I want to watch anymore.

Doesn't Facebook have a kids setting automatically? I'm sure squid game isn't permissible. That email seems a bit like the foagies in Congress question the Facebook whistle blower.
Isn't ring around the rosy about the plague? London bridge foretold a trump really. And who could forget every child nightmare inducing bedtime prayer if I should die before I wake.
But I was particularly sensitive to death since mom died when I was 6. These kids reenacting a show I never would have watched would definitely have upset me, and I don't at all mind the principal shutting it down

I loved it.
There is zero chance I would have my 6th grader watch it. Its one thing to have violence. But this is very casual violence. And graphic suicide. My 6th grader watched Dear Evan Hansen, which obviously deals with suicide. But its handled differently.

I had an ugly text argument with my ex-h because he allowed our 12 yr old son to binge watch the entire series. Ex-H didn’t watch a single episode until after DS had finished the series. It is definitely not appropriate for that age. It’s rated MA.
My boyfriend and I are watching this show right now. We can only do an episode at a time and need breaks in between. We've been more upset about the fact that a classmate of my 9 year olds is going as a character for Halloween and the mom is bragging about the homemade costume on social media. I cannot imagine EVER letting my 4th grader watch this show. I can't even imagine letting a 14 year old watch it... Maybe an older high schooler?
Anybody catch this sketch last weekend? I have never watched the show but it seems like the song gives a decent summary of what happens. And also I love Rami Malek ❤
