I think it's mostly aimed at the half of the population that isn't vaxx'd yet. Not that that section of the population cares. That being said, I wouldn't expose my unvaxx'd kid to traveling right now.
I read that twice and didn't see where Fauci said anything about not traveling for the holidays.
eta: For the record, not saying everyone should go jump on a plane. I just can't figure out where he said anything like that.

The headlines I was seeing on Monday quoting Fauci saying it's too soon to say if it'll be safe to gather for winter holidays is probably well explained by this:

His response, minus the "it's too soon to tell" was in the article I initially quoted, but this one has the context of the initial question from a reporter:
In a follow-up question, Brennan asked Fauci if “we can gather for Christmas or it’s just too soon to tell.”
“You know, Margaret, it’s just too soon to tell,” Fauci said. “We just got to concentrate on continuing to get those numbers down and not trying to jump ahead by weeks or months and say what we’re going to do at a particular time. Let’s focus like a laser on continuing to get those cases down and we can do it by people getting vaccinated and also in the situation where boosters are appropriate to get people boosted because we know that they can help greatly in diminishing infection and diminishing advanced disease.”
formerlyak , we're doing pretty much what you're doing. I go to work (in a school), my unvaxxed (obvi) 10 year old goes to school (universal masking required, staff vax requirement), kid also goes to his sport (indoors, masked). We allow him outdoor masked GTGs (that might be considered overboard) w/ his buddies, we do outdoor dining on occasion, and he'll go into a store w/ me masked of course (me too) for a quick errand. But we're not hanging out socially (ETA: indoors) in groups where we don't know the vax status of all of the guests, we're not dining indoors, we're not traveling or going to large events (concerts, sports games).
People can call it living in fear, but we are SO CLOSE (OMG!) for the 5-11s eligibility that I'm not about to blow it now by lifting all of our self-imposed restrictions. I don't really give a shit what anyone else thinks (my friend circle, people at work, or society in general) or says about us re: our choices.

This is us too. Thankfully, most of our friends have the same mindset so we have a masked, outdoor crew to hang with and if folks are judging, they're doing it in their heads.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
This is what I should've said to my unvaxxed dr sister when she said that to me. She feels sorry for me that I'm living in fear of what is basically the flu. Those are her words, not mine.
Eek, I'm sorry. What kind of doctor is your sister? I haven't met an unvaccinated doctor yet. I presume she doesn't live in an area where a lot of health systems are requiring vaccines then? That really sucks
PDQ: She's a PA who works in a private plastic surgery office with her H. They own the practice. She was unvaxxed as of early August... I imagine it hasn't changed. I'm 99% sure her H is unvaxxed as well. She's in eastern WA state. PDQ
I've only skimmed this thread. Just chiming in to say, I went ahead and canceled our tickets for Disney. I guess this means I'm one of those living in fear. lol
ETA: Tix were for Christmas break. I hope we can go in April instead. I know Disney is full of germs, but I will truly feel different about all this once my children are vaccinated.
Pilsy it sucks, but I would have done the same. We re-booked our 2020 Florida spring break trip for this coming spring break (end of March 2022) hoping the kids will be vaccinated by then.
There is a petition from a high schooler to bring back asynchronous wednesdays.
One of his reasons is quarantine for exposure.
Ummm, if you're in high school, you're old enough to be vaccinated. I don't think the school is going to change their entire schedule to accommodate idiot kids. Just go get vaccinated, then you don't have to quarantine for exposures.
It's not covid, but I'm putting this here... We got an email at 9 pm that our kid's classroom is closing for the rest of the week due to RSV. So now we're scrambling.

I never really understood the asynchronous Wednesday in the first place, especially once we learned more about how it is/isn’t spread (not surfaces). I haven’t seen research on whether or not there were actually benefits to a shortened day, either. Was a 5 hour school day significantly better than 7? Or did it just feel like it should be better?
I know everyone made the best decisions they could given the information we had at the time. I’m not saying anyone did anything wrong at the time. I’m just wondering what we will find as we (eventually) look back on all of this. No doubt, we’re going to look back and realize some stuff we did was pretty silly and unnecessary. But again, just doing the best we had with the information we had.
We got our first “close contact” email for my son yesterday. Last contact date was on Friday and so far he has no symptoms. I asked him who has been absent all week and it’s the boy who sits right next to him. I asked if he wears a mask (not required) and my son said “most of the time.” I guess that’s better than nothing…ugh.

Seems like things are moving along however between Halloween and Thanksgiving seems like a large gap to me. I hope it does not take that long after the meeting.
Pfizer Asks F.D.A. to Authorize Its Covid-19 Vaccine for Children 5 to 11
By Sharon LaFraniere and Noah Weiland Oct. 7, 2021, 8:08 a.m. ET WASHINGTON — Pfizer and BioNTech said on Thursday morning that they had asked federal regulators to authorize emergency use of their coronavirus vaccine for children ages 5 to 11, a move that could help protect more than 28 million people in the United States.
The companies has said said they were submitting data supporting the change to the Food and Drug Administration. The agency has promised to move quickly on the request and has tentatively scheduled a meeting on Oct. 26 to consider it. A ruling is expected between Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Anyone know how long it took FDA to issue the first EUA? The one for 12-16?

Basically the whole petition was him whining and complaining about having to go back to a normal school day/year. Sorry dude, welcome to life.
And I think some are being overly cautious about surfaces still. Our librarian still has to quarantine the books and the music teacher can't have a rug in her classroom.

I remember it happening really quickly. They set the meeting. People started scheduling appointments assuming it was going to pass that same week. My kid had a shot in her arm less than a week later.

I truly think they will move as fast as safely possible. I don't expect authorization before the meeting on the 26th but I guess anything is possible. I think they will want kids 5-11 vaccinated before the holiday travel season.
***I'm sure I'll get some side-eyes about our plans. We're being as cautious as we can be, it's the "low season" there, so not many tourists. We're taking the approach of trying to find the middle ground with travel, but also avoiding crowds.
H and I are supposed to go to Aruba on Saturday. We're renting a house, grocery delivery, basically just hanging by ourselves at our house and the beach (admittedly going to 2 dinners outside the 2 nights before we go home) but getting some much needed time away from things. Our parents have graciously offered to watch the kids while we're gone. We've been on lockdown in preparation for the trip. My parents got covid (posted about that a week or so ago) but are thankfully vaccinated, and will be well in the clear by the time they come up on Tuesday. HOWEVER. H's parents are supposed to come up TOMORROW AFTERNOON. I call yesterday to touch base, see what groceries they wanted on hand, etc. MIL casually drops that FIL is currently taking his temperature because he doesn't feel well, but "he probably just has what I had last week. It wasn't covid though. I had a fever, aches, runny nose, cough, but never lost my sense of smell, and didn't have a hard time breathing. So I know it wasn't covid."
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK.
She's vaccinated, but didn't bother to test, and felt like shit for a solid 3 days, then "just had a cold." Now FIL feels like shit. She's more than 10 days out from her start of symptoms, but he's just starting. I asked them to go take tests. Rapids were negative, but I asked him to get a PCR. So now we wait.
I just can't believe they were legit going to roll up here all "tra-la-la, he's sick with a cold, but we're sure it's not covid because it's just what's going around down here." THERE SURE AS FUCK IS. Something called COVID is going around down there. My older kid is vaccinated, but my younger one is not.
Also of note? H and I have to test to come home and get back in the country next week. If he HAD come up here with covid, we would have likely been stuck down there with it and not allowed back in the country for 10 extra days.
When I pointed this out to her, her response? Well why can't you just go somewhere normal like Myrtle Beach or Florida? If you didn't want to leave the country this wouldn't be a big deal. I cannot...

Oof I'm sorry. RSV and HFM were in the infant/toddler rooms a month ago. Luckily older kids avoided it.

H's cousin is engaged and called to ask DD to be flower girl. If it were next spring or summer, we'd probably have no issue, but she's planning for FEB, they're in TX and I know she's not vaxxed (had it last fall and believes the effects bs). H is antsy to travel, but I was showing him with the best case scenario of approval for under 5 happening in late Nov, she'll be barely vaxxed by then.
pixy0stix, is that typical? Both of mine were in daycare and both I'm sure had illnesses run rampant, but I've never heard of a classroom closing. That's super inconvenient for parents! It sounds like since that became a "thing" with COVID they're making it one with anything contagious?
Pilsy, I get it. I'm sorry We were supposed to go to Hawaii at the end of this month and cancelled last week. What REALLY sucks (first world problem) is that we were flying a specific airline/route due to points and the seats we'd get. That route has now ended as of January So, now I don't know what we're going to do.

What do you mean by barely vaxxed? You are most protected in the 2 months immediately following full vaccination.

I read it as she means it's a big gamble to assume a specific little kid will be fully vaccinated by February.
Pfizer has officially requested authorization in kids 5-11. Doesn't seem to be anything new here, except a potentially further slipped timeline for authorization: between Halloween and Thanksgiving.
With the usual verbiage about how the dose is still totally up in the air, so I guess we shouldn't get our hopes up for anything this school year, since there's only one dose for this age group with 6 months of safety data. Like seriously, how fucking horribly does the NYTs think this trial went if this is still up in the air?
sillygoosegirl, what do you mean about the dose being still totally up in the air? I think there are certainly questions about how the FDA will view the smaller trial population, manufacturing, dosing, etc., but from what I understand the 10 µg dose for age 5-11 has produced pretty good data. I haven't seen anything to suggest that at this point it's still "totally up in the air."

Articles keep saying we don't know what the dose will be. I cannot figure out why anyone actually thinks that, since we only have long term data on one dose. I want to scream every time I see it.

It's very common when there's an outbreak. For the past two weeks we've been getting multiple notifications a day that another kid has it. I think at some point the health department steps in and says they have to close. It's not the whole center though, just my kid's class and I think the pre-k class.

Andy Slavitt tweeted today that kids will be able to get vaccinated by Halloween.
I know that's not a hard fact, but seeing him say it made me feel excited.
