jamaicam , Oh man that's awful (the dumping). I get a fair amount of sly shit with people saying, out loud, "I'm really worried about Delta & people that say they are vaccinated but got J&J. They aren't nearly as protected as myself who go Pfizer..."
Um, lady, I got the first shot I was offered PER THE CDC & it was J&J. Sorry that now you think I'm a danger to you & that I shouldn't *actually* be considered fully vaccinated. WTAF.
AZ & J&J can be hugely impactful...if everyone gets vaccinated! I'm angry that those 2 vaccines, which IIRC don't require the same intense storage standards as the mRNA one, could make a massive difference in the 3rd world or communities in difficult to reach places. Instead, they are being looked down upon...everywhere...and it's not helpful.
Yep. J&J booster data actually shows more effective than Pfizer. But in any case, I’m most interested in the cross-vaccine data as a j&j recipient. Would getting moderna (higher performing against delta than Pfizer) work better than a J&J booster? That data is coming soon.
This is the data I'm waiting for as well. I got J&J in March, then in April the news came out re the blood clot side effect. Which only gives me pause b/c I have a blood clotting condition that makes me high risk. So I really shouldn't/can't get another J&J shot. But no one can tell me yet if I should get an mRNA booster.
Having said all of that, I feel like my J&J shot its doing job. And if I didn't have a clotting disorder, I'd get the J&J booster once it's approved. My H got J&J, too, and that's the booster he'll get once it's approved.
The Daily Podcast also made mention of the angle to the Joe Rogan story about "being silenced". Once they started making these crazy shows & were "just asking questions", then Facebook & YouTube took down anything that was clearly misinformation. That got their hackles all up & they started playing the "BUT BUT BUT big Pharma is trying to silence us!!!" card which helped their movement gain even more traction and become more viral as they convinced people the deep state was out to get them and their alternate facts about COVID.
It’s not implausible to me that pharma of course wants to make money. That’s what our society is about. I remember being a pharma saleswoman in my earlier 20s and that is a shady industry to say the least. I couldn’t stand it and ethically had to leave for my own sanity
That part of the story makes sense to me. Whether IVM is the drug that really helps COVID? I’m not totally convinced, nor is it the situation to make a point
You missed the big part here - misinformation is, in general, spread by the "just asking questions" or "being neutral hearing both sides". It sounds reasonable. It checks all the boxes of being "fair and balanced" until you start to realize that what is being pushed is crazy. You just haven't hit that point yet, or you might not and go fully anti-vaxx/anti-pharma. Granted, what we're doing here, being strongly anti what you've brought us, isn't going to convince you. In fact, it might make you dig your heels in harder. Just know that Rogan is a douchebag, and I strongly suggest you stop listening. He's actually pretty dangerous in the spread of misinformation.
For the rest of us, it's important to note how this slide happens, and to remember to question where and how we're forming our ideas.

The groups pushing ivermectin or COVID alternatives aren't giving it away for free though, they are also in it for the money. America's Frontline Doctors charge $90 just for a phone consult, and are estimated to have made over 6 million in the past year, plus an additional 8 million on supplements. Also, Merck is the producer of ivermectin, and they are telling people not to take it. They ARE "big pharma" and are not pushing their drug.
Meanwhile vaccines are free. Obviously the company is getting paid somewhere along line, but the general public isn't getting nickle and dimed with consult, follow up, and supplement fees.
For those who got moderna are you planning to wait for the booster is approved? I am about 8 months out from being fully vaccinated and returning to work in a hospital next week where they are giving employees the Pfizer booster. I’m torn as to what to do.
You can talk to your own doctor about it, but I just had this conversation with my doctor last week, and she said that people who got the Moderna vaccine don't need boosters yet (unless you are immunocompromised). She said the data show that immunity from the Moderna vaccine still seems to be holding strong, unlike Pfizer, probably because the Moderna vaccine has almost 4 times as much mRNA as the Pfizer one.
I just got back from my oncology appointment. He called me a “very lawful citizen” for getting my booster already (ummmm, I asked you about it). And he also told me I should go on my planned cruise next month. He seemed most concerned with staying in the Caribbean. But… he said go. And then I said I’m coming after him if I come back with covid.
I’m not a huge fan of him for other reasons. But I’m not quite sure what to make of this. And how is plays into my feelings.
Has anyone in CO gone through the process to receive free tests? I think I signed up 2 weeks ago to get an email to order, and just now got the email. The email is confusing as hell, though, and I say this as someone who can speak government.
I got my booster on Sat. So far my worst side effect is my sore/swollen armpit lymph node on that side. It started yesterday afternoon and is still going. Much more sore than my other two shots. Otherwise just general acchiness in that arm plus being more tired than usual.

I did. Got the email to order the following day. Just clicked the link and put in my name and email and then followed whatever directions (I can’t remember). They sent the tests and I had them like 3 days later. I didn’t find it confusing, but I also didn’t read the email closely, just clicked the ordering link.

One thing you could do is have your antibody levels checked. I have friends who have done it through their doctor, and gotten a quantitative value for their antibody levels. I went to Kroger, where they can do a lateral flow assay where you are just told if you are positive or negative for antibodies (one result for spike protein/vaccine induced Ab, one result for Ab from natural infection, both on the same test).
Neither test is a guarantee as to how you would fare if you were exposed, but the results may either be comforting or make you want to go get the booster. (Of course, I say that, but when boosters were approved for high risk individuals who got Pfizer, I immediately booked my appointment to get mine even though my Ab test came back “super positive” according to the pharmacist who ran it just 2 weeks prior. So how much the test comforts you may be highly variable!)

I can see why he annoys you. He sounds super patronizing and a little xenophobic/racist to boot.

I couldn't even remember which vaccine I got so I checked a couple of weeks ago and I got moderna. I don't feel compelled to get a booster, so personally I'm going to wait. I've been reading back and forth info about the necessity of a booster, so right now I'm meh about it.

Some of that might have been my phrasing. By concerned I meant, he was asked three times, but bc he was saying a Caribbean cruise is OK, but he is still nervous about going beyond the general north american area. Also, he is Korean (so I doubt US xenophobic). Apparently, I have biases in oncology, as the ones I’ve loved have been Eastern European (Serbia, Polish). And it’s probably xenophobic of me to consider the Caribbean “general NA area.” But, I was following his logic. We mostly laughed about the dangers of the drop off in Florida.
I just saw on the Today Show Instagram that the Bridgerton hair and makeup artist who just won an Emmy died of COVID at 53. He’d had both vaccine doses and he didn’t have any underlying conditions.
Of course some people are saying it’s proof the vaccine doesn’t work. But if everyone was vaccinated, it wouldn’t be nearly as likely to spread and he probably wouldn’t have caught it.
It is so scary and frustrating that you can do everything right and it still isn’t enough. Can we ever stop worrying?
Well in Dubai we aren't considered high risk, so jo boosters for us even though I got my 2nd dose in early March. I'm really not sure what they are waiting for. Based on availability, they have plenty of vaccine on hand.
They're doing boosters in Doha for ages 50 and over, and I do think they'll be extending it to everyone over the next few months. I got my second shot mid-March, so I'm thinking that I might be due. I'm flying back to the US next week so I may get my booster then to be safe!
It's always interesting to see what countries decide to do - I think Qatar follows the US/CDC on some things, but not everything. We're at over 80% fully vaccinated and masks are still required everywhere indoors (which I'm fine with)! It also means our cases are super low! We're finally down to double digits - I'm feeling pretty good about it.
rubytue, I can understand his concern regarding other countries, as jamaicam, said her country is barely vaccinated (whether by choice or availability) but I'm shocked he's not concerned about the actual cruise ship. My sister is going on one with RC at the end of the month and did say that it's a low capacity and you have to be vaccinated (if age appropriate) but I'm not sure if all cruise lines are doing that. I'll admit I haven't really researched how many have had cruises already and what the outcomes have been, so I'm definitely not well versed here.

The funny thing is, we didn’t discuss any of that. The cruise line is requiring 100% vaccination and a negative PCR test 3 days before and a rapid at boarding. And, I’m not really planning to get off the ship at ports. Maybe the private island. Still, yeah… it’s the close quarters on the ship. And also the atmosphere on this particular cruise. Which is to to be drunk for days and hug everyone. But… none of that discussed.
Instead, we spent most of the appointment discussing why I did radiation treatment, two years ago, when he doesn’t think I needed it and it does have long term effects. I actually had to stop him because, it’s done. We can’t take it back. I didn’t want to do it at the time and I consulted half a dozen specialists about it, and they all said do it (I told one doctor I felt that signing the consent form was signing my death warrant.) Second guessing it now doesn’t help. Sorry…. That is not covid related. Total digression.
That Joe Rogan podcast from June 22 was pretty fascinating actually. I wouldn’t say he was fanatical at all in the podcast. He interviewed two doctors who had been studying ivermectin and it’s effects on COVID since the beginning.
Summary, listening to these guys is like listening to the handful of scientists that say that climate change isn't happening, or that vaccines cause autism. There's little to no evidence to support them. Stop listening to podcasts to get your scientific information.
Per the Scientific American article,
Cedric Dark, an emergency physician and professor at Baylor College of Medicine, says ivermectin is usually given as a one-time dose when it is used as a parasite treatment. In contrast, the FLCCC’s prevention protocol suggests taking it “twice a week for as long as [COVID] risk is elevated in your community.”
Somebody promoting all this ivermectin stuff must have a financial stake in it.

I'm not, but maybe I would if I were working closely with COVID patients and my job suggested I get it. Since I have some time before I'm back in a higher risk situation, I am interested to hear what news comes out about the Moderna booster in the coming weeks.
Local news has caught on to the messaging the percentage of staff laid off due to non-compliance of company vaccine mandates. The health system (UCHealth for the locals) terminated .5% of their workforce yesterday. Almost every headline I've seen today says that.
I just saw on the Today Show Instagram that the Bridgerton hair and makeup artist who just won an Emmy died of COVID at 53. He’d had both vaccine doses and he didn’t have any underlying conditions.

I saw that and had a similar thought…but then I had to remind myself of all of the other risky things that I do in life. I don’t know the specific numbers to know for sure, but I’m pretty sure that you’re statistically more likely to be struck by lightning than to die from Covid after being fully vaccinated. You’re probably also more likely to be killed by a drunk driver. You can do ALL of the things right, but sometimes tragedy still strikes. There’s inherent risk in everything.
Especially as more treatments become available, and hopefully we will move to an endemic situation, I think we just need to live our lives. That’s going to take actual work on our parts, though, mentally. You can’t just flip a switch from high anxiety, carrying the weight of worry of infecting others, to living life like normal.
I think one of the things with vaccinated breakthrough cases is that people trust their vaccine to work, and when they have a case, they don’t reach out to a doctor for help until it’s late in the game. That’s one of the downsides to all of the celebrating we’ve done regarding the effectiveness of the vaccine. We are pretty certain that the vaccine will do it’s job, because statistically, it does! But then on rare occasions, it doesn’t. The antibody treatment is a great option for many, but it has to be given in the first 10 days for maximum effectiveness. Because of the timing of how the virus works, sometimes people don’t feel sick/worthy enough for the treatment until that window has closed.

Yeah, we are dropping quickly, which I am so glad about. I'm also fine with masking since I've seen first hand what can happen when a country does it too early, lol. I got a kick out of Dubai "relaxing" some mask things for Expo opening...like no masks at the beach or when exercising outside. Uh...no one's been doing that for a while!
lilac05 , my friend has a breakthrough case and has been really sick for almost 2 weeks now. She asked her dr. about the antibody treatment and they said it had to be given in 3 days. They've done everything right, she's vaccinated and she's suffering so much. It was past the 3 days when she asked (I think it was day 5 or 7, definitely less than 10!), but the dr. said she wouldn't have met the criteria anyway (not sick enough, perhaps too young). I feel so bad for her. @@@ The one bright side is that her 2 young kids (4 and 7, so not vaxxed) do not appear to have gotten it from her.
ETA: added the @ tag. Forgot which thread I was in.

Meanwhile I know someone who wasn't sick enough and around 30 years old (and also unvaccinated) who got the treatment because of a family connection she has at a hospital. I am glad the treatment is there and is saving lives but there is clearly something wrong with the process to get the treatment, especially given there are supply issues with it. I hope your friend is on the mend soon.

Ugh. I’m so sorry to hear that. Around here, 10 days is the cut-off (or it was 3 weeks ago). 3 days just seems so unrealistic…because at 3 days & vaccinated, you’re pretty certain (and understandably so!) that you’re just about to turn the corner and be back to health. It wasn’t until day 7 that I started to lose confidence that my vaccine was going to be able to continue to stand up to the viral load that I had. That’s great that her kids don’t seem to have gotten it! I hope she feels much better really soon!

Yeah, I was shocked when she told me 3 days. I wonder if the limited supply is causing them to ration it or save it for the unvaxxed. Which makes me SO MAD if I think about it too much. Why do we suck so much? We being this country. I've been having that thought a lot lately.

Three days seems so unrealistic with the current testing. Day 1 - just allergies. Day 2 - maybe I should test, look for a test. Maybe find a PCR appointment on day 3. Which you won’t see results from until days 4.
I thought it was 3 days at some point, too. Which is why I got tested once at the first sign of a cold. Because I had “3 days” in my head (I guess from tamiflu). Then I found out it’s 10 days.
A local county deputy was "verbally reprimanded" for not wearing a mask at the hospital, even when given one by staff and asked several times to do so. The who instance was caught on his body cam. The fucking useless sheriff gave the deputy a "good ol' fashioned talking to". *eye roll*
ETA: There's several people in the comments (I know I know) saying, "masks don't work!" WHY THE FUCK DO YOU THINK THEY'RE ASKING HIM TO WEAR ONE IN THE FUCKING HOSPITAL NUMBNUTS IF THEY DON'T MEDICALLY WORK?! I swear to god.
