Am I the only one that thinks it's oddly coincidental that there's a massive Facebook outage the morning after 60 Minutes ran the story about their whistleblower and all the horrible information she snuck out of there about their policies on moderating content (or the lack thereof)?

I came here to see if anyone was talking about this!
I mean - I can't say I'm surprised that their policies are so awful, so to see documentation that proves it just confirms what we all knew. But the fact that after the election they dissolved their Civic integrity unit because they were kind of like "ok - job's done" is just insane.

Okay I just uninstalled FB thinking the problem was on my end because my wifi at work is acting weird too. I'm so relieved. But also WTF given the story last night.

It is suddenly making me realize how much I use FB Messenger.
Same. I use it just like texting for some friends. Makes me think about what my contacts would be like if FB suddenly just disappeared. I have quite a few friends who I’m not even sure if I have their phone numbers!

Whatsapp is used by everyone in my social sphere so this is going to be hitting lots of people in the UK. Most of us never use text. Facebook too (international people use it often as it's just easy to keep in touch with family and friends).

Yes! Everyone here is completely lost without whatsapp.
i had to send a text today, not sure when I last did that.

I also thought about WhatsApp and how big of a deal it must be outside of the US.
I think rates and also international texting that is especially expensive.
I also think it’s the rates and international ease. I use it for my friends who are overseas and when I’m traveling abroad.
Also lots of people in Europe use pay as you go. A £10 reload used to give you a certain amount of data per month, plus 5p per text (more for international). But if you use something like WhatsApp while connected to wifi it costs nothing and you can text anyone anywhere. I used to use it all the time to keep in touch with Canadian friends when I lived abroad.
