An inflatable mat that can be used for tumbling and all kinds of stuff. We got 20ft long and could easily have gone longer (they can attach with velcro). They are MUCH cheaper now than when I bought at the height of the pandemic, but worth even the $400+ I paid. It's also a GREAT slip n slide
My boys are 9 and 7. The 9yo still loves toys. Magnatiles, marble run, Legos, and board games are in heavy rotation. Anything you can use to build a fort - play tents, play tunnels, and those stick-and-ball fort construction sets. The basics are always popular- arts and crafts, Play-doh and kinetic sand, large inflatable balls, hippity-hops. My 9yo’s special interest is vehicles, so he’ll still set up tracks with our Brio, Hot Wheels and Magic Trax but he may be an outlier.
I also created a maker-space in the corner of the playroom that’s a large box filled with clean recycling items - smaller boxes, bottles, random packing materials. They build the most creative items/games with it but most parents (understandably) aren’t interested in keeping a large box filled with what is essentially trash in their home.
This is brilliant. My DD would love this idea because she is always saying "I call keeping the box!" or whatever. May do this, assuming she understands that things we be tossed eventually.
A couple other ideas. My parents got all their school age grandkids a faux Go-Pro set from Costco for Christmas last year. It’s a real camera with all the accessories, marketed as a toy for kids. Our 12 year old neighbor boy plays out on his skateboard and mini-ramp all the time and also has a tripod/ camera set up to video his tricks. My nephews have spent months making a movie with their dad’s help. DS1 makes video game YouTube videos that we never post. I’ve also consider getting DS1 a 3-d printer. Both involve some computer time.
11yo dd is out of toys but loves Harry Potter legos, any puzzles, crafts, music, and will play with magnatiles occasionally. Also she does games sometimes.
Just turned 7 dd still loves toys but doesn’t really play with them. She loves to do anything outside.
2 yo dd is a toddler and likes all the things. I’m really trying not to go overboard with toys and so far it’s working. She has a ladder type shelf with 4 shelves and that’s all the toys she has. It’s a lot of puzzles, Melissa and Doug shape sorter things, dolls, magnatiles, etc. I will get her a play kitchen for Christmas.
