I am thinking of switching preschools. My county in California finally lifted the outdoor mask recommendation for K-12 (still masking indoors). Our preschool mostly follows the K-12 guidelines, but they said they have no plans to lift the outdoor mask requirement at preschool. The preschool is already entirely outdoors this year so far, and I really hate my two year old spending five hours a day masked at school when the risk is so, so low for her. I don’t understand why they are keeping the outdoor masks (“we are allowed to be more strict than the county!”). Ughhhh. We will lose a bunch of money if we switch, but ugh. I strongly feel that the speech and social emotional benefits of seeing faces are more important than outdoor masking for very young kids in a very highly vaccinated, low transmission area.
I’m taking some of this story with a grain of salt. The idea that you got a shot on October 4th and by the 11th you had insight from a “pediatric cardiologist” is perhaps unlikely. It isn’t like pediatric cardiologists are just sitting there with a bunch of open appointments. This probably could only have happened if there kids were so sick that they took them to an ER of a major hospital.
So maybe, but maybe not. As someone with two kids with crazy diagnoses and deals with lots of pediatric specialists, this type of quick specialist intervention isn’t that common.
I know that in the older kids that did have heart issues it was after the 2nd dose, not the first. Not saying this story is/isn’t accurate, but I agree I would like to hear more.
With how low the myocarditis risk is in older kids, it seems very unlikely that 2/2 younger kids would have "heart issues" due to getting the higher dose. Looking to hear something more out of this than a lawyer's take.
I don't doubt that it happened, medical mistakes happen all of the time. If my kid got any wrong shot that hadn't been FDA approved I'd probably take them right to the hospital or at least their pediatrician to be checked out. And I'd be PISSED, especially because Walgreens immediately went into cover-their-own-ass mode.

Maybe there are medically fragile kids who attend or employees or relatives who are? If you feel strongly about it then it's probably a good idea to switch.

If you otherwise love your preschool this seems like a long term solution to a short term problem. I would far prefer a school that’s going above and beyond with Covid safety than one that does the bare minimum (as my public school has; our now former superintendent made it clear there’s only a mask mandate because the state required it).
yeah glad i didn't read this before i took my kids to walgreens for our flu shots a few weeks ago :/ I hope those kids are okay.
Oh wow. I have flu shots for my kids scheduled with Walgreens because our pediatrician only had a few days of clinics they were offering them, and their appointments were all booked. They wouldn't allow us to make a separate appointment due to staffing shortages
Ours had lots and lots of openings but almost all their clinics were weekdays from like 1-3.
Cause it's not like there's another place kids need to be during that time period.

Sounds just like mine, except they were also at a location 40 minutes from me.
I checked around a little more yesterday and it looks like Park Nicollet/Health Partners takes appointments for anyone.

How old is your child? I don't have an issue masking outside in cooler weather, but if it is 80+ everyday masking I am sure can be difficult. How would she feel about switching? And are there schools to switch to?
vamoose, I wouldn't want my toddler/preschooler to have to mask outdoors either. We are in NY which recently began requiring full day masking indoors at daycare for ages 2+. I'm not a fan, although I don't really have a choice so we didn't make any changes. Any daycare that's state licensed will have the same rule. My 2 year old's toddler class takes masks off for breakfast, lunch, snack, and nap, all indoors, so I hardly see the point in masking in between. At best it might lower viral load? But with all those breaks, it won't prevent any close contacts/exposures and probably wouldn't prevent transmission. Fortunately both my daycare kid and my K-12 kid can unmask when outdoors.
I don't know that I'd switch daycares right away in your spot though. At least near us, requirements have been very dynamic and change both for the better and worse every few months. You could go to all the trouble of switching only to see it change right after you do. It helps though that I think our center shares my views that the cost to the kids of attempting full day masking at ages 2-4 exceeds the benefit. I'm hopeful it'll go away again when rates eventually come down.
vamoose I also wouldn’t want my 2 year old masked outside. My understanding of the data is that it doesn’t really support doing so. My 3 year old is masked inside at daycare, which I prefer even though I acknowledge Susie’s point that with the masks removed for eating and napping I’m not sure how effective that really is.
Thank you for all of the thoughts on my kid's preschool masking outdoors. My daughter is two. Many other local preschools are following the public schools, and so have been masking outdoors this year so far (like us), but have removed the masking outdoor requirement this week to align with the public schools. I agree that I could end up switching schools and then cases rise or something and outdoor masks come back, which has given me pause. This is pretty important to me though, and I feel like this may just be a misalignment in beliefs on the cost / benefit of masking preschoolers between myself and the school. I feel like covid is not going anywhere, and today our disagreement is with outdoor masking for two year olds, but I am sure these conversations are going to continue for quite awhile. I don't know. I emailed the board president and asked if we can chat after drop off some day soon.

Our entire house is vaccinated and after skipping a halloween party last year we were planning to go tomorrow night, but MH is all stuffed up and coughing. He went to get tested today and if the results come back negative DS and I may go, but I told DS if we don't have the results then we can't go. He knows it's the right thing, but he's bummed because he would of gotten to hang with friends he hasn't seen for awhile. Ugh I hate this!!
And our town is one of the towns being sued over the mask mandate in Massachusetts. I feel like this pandemic has brought out the "all about me/my family" and that no one thinks about the community at large and how their actions can impact others.
Our state's vaccine mandate for public employees goes into effect next week. The school district just announced they're going to suspend over 140 bus routes so they can prioritize drivers for the most necessary routes. We've only had a bus for three weeks because of driver shortages, but it's made our lives so much easier and my kids love it.
UGH. Get your vaccine and keep driving the bus, assholes!

Are you able to get a rapid test kit? I know they can be hard to come by, but I’ve had good luck at a local Walgreens. I hope you guys are able to go!

I was just about to post almost the identical post. We got notification at 5:30pm that DS' middle school bus is suspended indefinitely starting Monday. We were expecting it because his bus driver said he's being transferred to another route, but the confirmation SUCKS!
They're supposed to be giving out Orca cards but I'm sure that will take awhile. I'm thinking for the time being DS is going to have to use the Orca card DD got through her high school (she doesn't use it for school). It has her name on it but I'd have to think they'd be lenient in this transition period.

We don't have a bus driver vax requirement, but like everywhere are seriously struggling to staff bus routes. They have routes with no drivers, and some districts offered families 500$ a month if they agree to not bus for the whole year. If I was a sahp with a big car this would be a great side hustle!
The other consequence that in some ways is worse, is that they have zero subs. So although my kids have a route, we have gotten less than 10 minutes warning that it was cancelled. If you are at work far away you could be really screwed. In our case it isn't a big deal because my kids are old enough and close enough to just walk home.
But there are little kids who cannot possibly walk home, or there is a church with a large elementary after school program and they have had to scramble to transport 50 kids from the elementary school to the church when busses cancel. It's just a mess. And with parents having to have magical schedule flexibility for the last 18 months, this is just the cherry on top of the shit sundae.

My family's PCP has flu shots available from 8am-12pm on weekdays only.
smock & InBetweenDays my DS' school district as of a few weeks ago made an announcement that some routes are A week and some B week. Kids only gets busing two weeks of every month cause that's super helpful.
At the neighboring school district, there are three kids to every bus seat because they combined routes….84 kids on one single bus. But the Halloween event is a drive through parade where you aren’t allowed out of your car. Seems like an outdoor walking parade, which is what is usually done, would be perfectly fine if you’re okay stuffing them like sardines in an enclosed tube.

Same here. My daughter is on a bus three to a seat. She’s too young to walk or bike the distance, but if she was older I would absolutely have her do that instead. Luckily she is last on and first off and the whole bus route takes 5 minutes for her.
