I saw it and gasped. His son is the chairman of the board of the Mayo Clinic. You know they had access to any and all medical help. Goes to show how tough and cruel this disease can be. So sad.

By my count every high profile Republican Party* death to date has been Black. Am I missing people? Such a stark illustration of the racial dynamics at play with covid. So sad, especially in this case when he was fully vaccinated.
*at this point he basically died a Democrat but you know what I’m saying I think
I also gasped when I saw it - I got an Apple News notification on my watch. I didn't realize he was 84, but given that he was a Vietnam vet it makes sense.
One of the few Republicans of the 21st century I respected.
On a personal note, this is going to freak my mom out. She’s just a few years younger and also fully vaccinated. Maybe she’ll wear a mask more often now.
Poor guy, he seemed like he was in good health otherwise; although, I guess who really knows. Fully vaccinated too
Just FYI, he had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma in the past. I generally hate the jump to "did X have any comorbid conditions?" but wanted to point that out. 84 is past life expectancy and he had a chronic condition It’s obviously sad for his family and friends nonetheless.

Ah okay, I wasn't aware. Yes, very sad. My dad is one year older than him...he is vaccinated and will get a booster when he can, just tired of the worry.

Fox News is already on "let's talk about waning immunity from vaccinations because of Colin Powell." I'm just so annoyed. Older people don't respond as well to vaccinations. This is known. If we're so concerned about Colin Powell's death, let's talk about getting more people vaccinated to protect the elderly and immune compromised who will never have as much protection as the young/healthy!

We are trying to convince my grandma to get her booster. But she’s totally a Fox News watcher, and regrets getting her first two shots and feels like we bullied her into it.
Also, she says she’s healthy as a horse. I mean, she’s a fairly spry 85 yo. But she’s also 85! And has a history of colon cancer, a heart attack, and she’s so anemic she needs regular iron and blood transfusions.
So no, grandma, you’re not as healthy as you think.

A 93 year old family friend died back in August of covid, despite being vaccinated. My mom hasn't told my sister he died, because mom can't deal with me sister going on about how vaccines don't work. Ugh.
I was a little surprised to wake up to this news this morning. I did not search prior articles but I thought when it was announced that he and his wife contracted COVID that she had a more serious case- I thought she was in ICU. he was in a "normal" medical bed; he was discharged to rehab while she was still hospitalized, etc. It just goes to show you how unpredictable COVID can be at times (thought his his PMH and age did not help as PP noted) and how much there is to learn about long COVID and post-acute COVID.

Is it possible you are thinking of Jesse Jackson and his wife--he got much sicker than she did. He is home now, though.

Not the same people at all, obviously, and I didn't confuse them.
No not you! The person you quoted, sorry if that was confusing. I was agreeing with you that they clearly thought Jesse Jackson and Colin Powell were the same person in this instance, hence "all Black people are the same."
