We have two trees: The kid tree has a Mario power up star I got on Etsy. The regular tree is a homemade angel- It's my DD's face (age 4) glued on a popsicle stick that's stuck in a styrofoam cup that is wrapped in a doily. The wings are her hand prints on gold paper. It's by far my favorite Christmas decoration lol.
I want a Shiny Brite topper, but they were sold out last year, and they don't seem to be in stock anywhere this year. So we have a star, too.
I just saw a Shiny Brite topper at West Elm online. It's Black Friday priced too.
Thank you!
This is so weird, because I have been looking at West Elm and it always says not available. I even looked today and the one that came up was not available. I did find the one on sale. I am going to get it.

We have DH’s grandparent’s multicolour star. It is light up incandescent bulbs and I would peg it at mid-80s. DH kind of hates it since he has to fish a separate extension cord up the tree since the tree has built in lighting. I have a love hate relationship with it. I think it’s unique, I love it, but it might also be a fire hazard based on the age of the wiring.
I have a hodgepodge tree as well. I had a tiny little Angel that was my grandmothers and then my moms. She was paper mache but she was just too small. I’m repurposing her as an ornament and last Christmas I got a felt topper from here - www.etsy.com/shop/Craftspring?ref=usf_2020
I got an Angel (I’m not religious but I still love her) but they have lots of options.

Our main tree sounds a lot like yours--no real theme, just a lot of sentimental ornaments and coloured lights. We use a sequined pink santa hat as a topper. It was supposed to be a placeholder since we didn't have a real topper yet, but I loved it so much I never tried to replace it.
I have a second tree in my office that's more cohesive, and I have a needle felt angel on top. I'm not religious, but my parents are so it's nostaligic for me.
For a while I had a diy one -- google paper woven star tree topper and you'll see all kinds of tutorials and examples. It lasted 2 or 3 years and then was looking pretty rough.
This will be year #3 for a moravian star that I absolutely love. We have a 2-story living room with the upstairs hallway being like a loft over it, and it casts awesome light all over. It's honestly one of my favorite things, and probably the classiest part of our decor which otherwise my husband lovingly calls "throwing up Christmas".
But what I really want is a stained glass and metal one. I haven't found one I like yet, and may have to buy a pendant light and convert it to a topper. Some day....
I'm also holding out to fight my brother and sister for the angel my grandma made, that is still on the top of my parents' tree. I'm ready to throw down for that. We're not really religious either, that's just purely sentimental.

Three trees, the “fancy” one has a red light up star, it’s a little small but works fine. The hodgepodge/hallmark ornament tree has a silver/glittery starburst thing on top that i got years ago. It doesn’t light up which is the only thing i don’t like but it’s pretty. And the Star Wars tree has a death star. Each kid has a small tree in their room with a topper as well. A silver snowflake and a red star.
I don't have anything to say about tree toppers, but I wish that people would stop referring to Christmas trees that have an eclectic mix of ornaments rather that matchy matchy, color coordinated, designer trees as Hodge-podge.
Hodge-podge suggests that it is somehow a confused collection of ornaments or a mess, when in reality, it is a carefully curated collection that reflects the memories and interests of the people that the ornaments belong to. They may not match, but they go together simply because they mean something to their owners. They bring joy and a connection to the past... they have stories.
I think that kind of tree is what most people think of as a family Christmas tree.
Don't get me wrong...I can (and do) enjoy and admire a well decorated tree, but I think there is nothing more heartwarming and beautiful than a tree covered in love and memories.

We have no tree topper. We have lots of lights and way too many ornaments that we have collected since we were kids and then our collections merged when we got married. And our kids get ornaments every year as well. There are some that my mom crocheted when I was a kid and even some that DH or I made in like preschool. It's so colorful and covered with crazy ornaments that I don't see the need for a topper. People who like matchy tree stuff would hate our tree, but I love that every ornament has a story.
We have a lit star that I'm pretty sure we're keeping until forever because we have a tradition that H lifts David up every year to put the star on. (David came up with this tradition. He must have seen it on TV or something, IDK, but it stuck!)

Interesting take. I think the phrase "confused collection" is a positive one and basically describes all things in my life, lol.

Lol.
I am pretty sure most of what we have in our home (not just at Christmas) looks like a confused collection to most people, but anyone who knows us (okay, mostly me) gets it. To me, there is nothing confusing about it...I can connect all the dots.
I often get comments like "I can tell that this is your house", and I can't always tell if it is a compliment or an insult. Either way, the confused collection gives them something to think about. lol
