This didn’t get any replies on ML, so I’ll try here. :-)
I’m going for a conference in Feb, solo. I’d ideally like to do it without a car. Conference is at the convention center, hotels nearby are mostly booked or insane cost (my bad for not doing it sooner). I’ll be spending full days there but may also get out and explore, or go back to the hotel for a nap, etc. How’s the light rail system to/from the center? Are there decent areas to stay in along the line like midtown or somewhat close? Which neighborhoods are ok, which to avoid? Either along the Line or otherwise. Thoughts on walking from the convention center?
Hello! I used to live in the Phoenix area (we were in Tempe near a couple of the light rail stops). DT Phoenix is way nicer than when I lived out there over 10 years ago. I've been a back a handful of times in the past couple of years and like DT way more than when I lived there. In DT, check out the Kimpton hotel if you haven't already. It's near the stadium and not a far walk to the convention center.
If that is crazy priced, I would look into AirBNBs in the downtown area or slightly north of DT. As long as you can walk to one of the stops on Central Avenue if you go north of DT, you will be fine and in a good area. Another option is to stay in Tempe. There are several light rail stations in Tempe. Hotels may be a bit cheaper there and there are some good restaurants and bars there. I can't remember how long the light rail ride is from Tempe to the convention center, but probably 20 minutes or so. It's been awhile since I have had to do that.
I wouldn't recommend staying in between the airport and the convention center as there is not much there, nor would I recommend staying in Mesa where the light rail starts/terminates at one end.
