Happy Friday! What have you read this week? Any reviews/ratings/recommendations?
QOTW: Do you have President's Day off on Monday? If so, do you have any plans? If you don't have the day off - when is your next holiday/planned day off?
I finished Billy Summers earlier in the week. Really liked it! Then I zipped through Seek You: A Journey Through American Loneliness. Excellent! My first 5 star read of the year. Last night I barely started Olga Dies Dreaming.
QOTW: I stay home but I’m not really off since
@
my toddler is off from preschool. I’m trying to pawn her off on my in-laws so I can have a partial break (still have to take care of my infant).
ETA: I forgot that I also read The Book of Hope by Jane Goodall. Very quick and like it advertises, offers hope specifically for halting and reversing the effects of climate change.

Finished The Bennet Sisters last night. It was fine, but embraced all the YA tropes that make YA not my favorite genre.
Still listening to North and South.
QOTW:Do you have President's Day off on Monday? If so, do you have any plans? If you don't have the day off - when is your next holiday/planned day off? I don't get off for President's Day, my next work holiday is Memorial Day, but I'm taking off a couple days during my kids' spring break in April.
I finished Black Cake, which was excellent, and Apples Never Fall, which was definitely not excellent. So slow and unnecessarily convoluted. Not sure what’s up next: I want to reread The Fifth Season for book club, and I also picked up The Magicians to reread since I started watching the series on Netflix. The Christie Affair has to be returned to the library soonest, so I might start there.
QOTW: I am off today and Monday — yay for a four day weekend! No big plans though, just odds and ends.

Currently reading People We Meet on Vacation. I'm liking it more than I expected. I'll probably finish it this weekend!
QOTW: I work at a bank so yes, I have it off! @- I took today off because E's birthday is Sunday and we're having family over tomorrow. He had a half day today and is off school Monday and Tuesday next week. We don't have any plans Monday. Might try to do something fun!
Earlier this week I read Arsenic and Adobo. I enjoyed it even though it wasn't a particularly good mystery.
I also read 6 shorts from the Amazon Blacks Stars collection. They were all speculative fiction from Black authors. I gave my 2 favorites an asterisk. 2043...(A Merman I Should Turn to Be) by Nisi Shawl The Black Pages by Nnedi Okorafor* The Visit by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie These Alien Skies by C.T. Rwizi* Clap Back by Nalo Hopkinson We Travel the Spaceways by Victor LaValle
Now I am reading The Evening and The Morning by Ken Follett, a prequel to Pillars of the Earth. It's fine but the fact that it's over 900 pages is making me second guess the decision to read it.
QOTW: We get a floating holiday in place of Presidents Day. I'm actually off this week and most of next on vacation though!
I finished The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman, 3*. I'm currently reading The Biggest Bluff by Maria Konnikova. I'm not a lover of poker, but it got a bunch of rave reviews from both poker and non poker people.
Qotw: My husband has a long weekend, but the kids do not. The next break we all have is Spring Break. My husband mentioned going to visit my family for Spring Break so that will be fun. I haven't been home for years.
I’m still working on The Invisible Life of Addie Larue, and hope to wrap it up this weekend since it’s overdue at the library. 🙈
We’re all off on Monday. My main plan at the moment is to be fully prepped for the week because I’m flying out very early on Tuesday for work. While I used to love to travel, I hate the emissions part, and this will be my first time on a plane since deciding (ahead of Covid) to do #flightfree2020. I tried to convince our governing official that we did not need to do what we’re going out there to do, but they didn’t agree with me on that point, so off I go. I have lots of fun plans for the non-work time, including meeting up with two friends and a cousin, none of whom I’ve seen in years, so I’m trying to make the most of it!
I DNF Put Me in Detention. I didn’t realize it was sort of part of a series and the female MC was very whiny.
I’m currently reading Weather Girl, but she’s very boring and I just had a cringeworthy read of finding out she hides her depression from basically everyone. NOPE NOPE NOPE. Why are we still stigmatizing mental illness? May be another DNF.
QOTW- I’m off and my kid is too so we’ll hang with the puppy and hit up Costco.
I finally got through a couple of books! I’ve been really slow lately.
The Invisible Husband of Frick Island by Colleen Oakley: meh. It was ok. Not bad, not great.
Think Again by Adam Grant: I really enjoyed this one! I took away a couple of ideas for rethinking my own strongly held beliefs.
I got another pile of books from the library so I have: - Violeta - The Kite Runner - Dedicated - Payback’s A Witch - The School For Good Mothers - The Last Girl Ghosted
I started Violeta and it’s pretty good. I’ll slowly make my way through the others.
QOTW: @@@ I’m a SAHM so I don’t get the day off and all 3 of my kids are home from school.
Had problems sleeping so lots of reading! All pretty solid choices.
Cherish Farrah by Bethany C. Morrow
The Other Family by Wendy Corsi Staub
From Hollywood with Love: The Rise and Fall (and Rise Again) of the Romantic Comedy by Scott Meslow
Red Thread of Fate by Lyn Liao Butler
Will by Will Smith & Mark Manson
Homicide and Halo-Halo by Mia P. Manansala
She Memes Well: Essays by Quinta Brunson
By the Book by Jasmine Guillory
QOTW: My husband is off, and took off Friday. I freelance from home so rearranged my work to be “off” too. We played board games, got fancy take out and did some binge watching.
He has so many vacation days! I can’t really see us doing much traveling beyond day trips for a while. I’m so tired of Covid!

I made amazing progress on "The Girl Before" this weekend. Hoping to keep the progress to finish this week.
QOTW: I had yesterday off (so very needed). Waiting on some personal stuff before we can make travel plans. Praying from my everywhere that tings are over before Oct for a true vacation in a different bed. Team over COVID.
