They’ve been at it for about 1.5 hours and no movement. 😳 2 tugs pushing, 2 pulling. DH said they are basically trying to pull it out backwards, diagonally.

at what point today do they say "nope, still not ready" and get back to digging/dredging?
This is all so fascinating. I feel like we have an insider giving us the live play by play!

lol!!
DH said that the guy coordinating all this has them on low power, which he doesn’t understand. Maybe after enough time, they’ll amp up the power a bit! I’m sure there are factors DH isn’t aware of, of course.
Tugs are now at full power and they've started the engines on the ship - still no movement!
She good’n stuck in the muck. 😳
Here is a video. youtu.be/RD09smIAvc0 and a second one youtu.be/By6pIApyeZY these must have been the live feeds from news choppers. They are long. But you can scroll in about an hour or so and really see the tugs churning. Go little tug, go!
edit - one more link. This guy is explaining what the plan was. youtu.be/ONTCXd5MyLg

thanks for those videos!! I was able to grab a couple screen shots of DH at work!! He was one of the tugs that was pushing.
This is just idle curiosity. It's amazing the scale and complexity of the cargo ship industry.
DHs company has standard crews of 4 people. Captain, mate, engineer, deckhand. The captain and mate both run the boat with the mate usually having the overnight shift, and then the engineer has to do the deckhand's duties, usually the nightshift too.
Lately (like the past couple years), they tend to run w/ 3 people a lot, which isn't ideal, but "staffing".
I know that other tug companies don't have 4 as their standard. I think one even has just 2 people - which is INSANE to DH. If something happens to one of them during a job? What do you do?? Deckhand goes overboard- the captain can't just leave the wheelhouse!
And to your point- I've learned a LOT over the past 13 years about ships, how cargo is moved, etc than I EVER thought I would know.
The hull is stuck about 18 feet deep in muck. A 2-3 story house stuck in the mud. H did the math about how much mud needs to be moved and it's staggering. She stuck goooood.

In That last video I posted, he talks about the dredge material. Apparently, what they are pulling up is thick like concrete. And they aren’t finding crabs or oysters in it.
I wonder if they got any movement at all yesterday. Like even an inch. And I hope they get some today. Although, then this thread ends. I was hoping for 300 pages like the plane 😂
It's going to be a couple days, but they are going to bring in 2 anchor barges, who - from what DH understands - can anchor themselves to the river bed and they will help with the pulling out process. The tugs will be involved in that too - but most likely DH won't be involved as he has to go to RI for work next week.

I feel like they were saying April 3&4 for the barge attempt. After that, they may try unloading cargo.
I was watching the shipping podcaster dude last night. No clue how correct he is with everything, but it’s kind of fascinating. H was listening and kept asking who it was. I was like “I dunno… some shipping bro.” So, that’s what we call him now. The shipping bro… He is apparently also a history professor, so maybe not full on bro. But, it does make me wonder if he really knows what he is talking about, or just has the bro confidence to sound convincing.

I do not have cargo on the vessel, but I have coworkers in my office who do. Thankfully, we are not the broker. I can only imagine being the ocean account person right now. Some accounts are breezy and understanding. The ones who are not are just mean. I feel for everyone involved in this.
ECB pleas tell your H and his coworkers thank you from the land side operations.

My company is a third party freight forwarder. This will go back to the importer of record. I’m curious to see if we will absorb any responsibilities.
I should have guessed - I was wondering how you knew multiple people with cargo onboard!
It’s likely a large account with multiple containers or they booked on one transaction for the space. I’m not sure exactly how that works on the booking side. I do the customs portion. Not every account my office handles does both broker and travel.
Has there been any news on HOW this happened? Was there a mechanical navigation issue or a human navigation issue?
Nope. Because I’m totally invested, I watch shipping bro’s updates. And just today he was going off about how no one is saying a word and the NTSB report will take a year. He was discussing it in terms of “general average” and having the cargo owners pay for the salvage without knowing what happened.
They have just now started taking off containers. Twitter link with a photo and the caption the first containers are coming off. twitter.com/mercoglianos/status/1512894394868899843?s=20&t=FxJcfqT04UAr_nNsQNI9kQ
