I inherited k3am weird work party themes. Theme is Circus.
Pinterest board for Friday night is striped shirts, polka dot yellow dresses, cheetah print shorts, ripped jeans, linen striped pants, olive green pants and dresses.
Pinterest board for Saturday night is similar but less casual, lots of reds, and oranges, animal prints, bright blue and greens/ teals. Sort of formal ish.
Circus is so not my style, since I am pretty understated and neutral, so I will feel ridiculous in a lot of these. I do own red and olive pants for the casual day.
Rent the runway is hit or miss, but I will keep searching.
I posted a few weeks ago asking what to wear to happy hour at an informal company. I retract all the "what to wear" angst I projected because this is nuts. Are you...the only one of your coworkers who don't already own "Circus style" outfits?
(As a follow-up to my post, the company is ordering hoodies for a company photo at the BBQ next Friday. I understand now to just wear jeans.)
waverly , I'd go for a cocktail dress in a fun color or animal print if you feel comfortable rocking it. Everyone else will be wondering WTF this theme is, and the interpretation will be very wide. And then there will be the 4 people who got white girl wasted while planning the theme, and they'll be in something amazing.
The theme typically doesn't carry over to the welcome night or the casual portions of the weekend, so just wear whatever you're comfortable in for that.
I'm going to have to text DH about this one... if YH's local office is anything like DH's was, your next one should be a REALLY "easy" (to interpret anyways) theme like Black Tie, Roaring 20's, etc.. I miss / don't miss these parties.
Side note, does anyone remember the South Park episode where they talk about how Family Guy come up with show ideas? And it's basicall a pool full of balls with random ideas and a dolphin picks? That is how this company picks it's party themes. It's known.
I would go for animal print in some form and call it a day. Even just a scarf? Maybe a fun hair clip? I went to a wedding and wore a plain turquoise dress and had a peacock feather hair clip and would probably wear that to this event.
I'm dying. WTF is a circus themed party for grown ups?! That's like a spirit day our kids would get at school and we'd all still be posting here about how hard it is to find stuff.
I feel like maybe Modcloth might have some dresses that could fit the vibe?
Would you accesorize with something zebra/ cheetah print like a cardigan, scarf, shoes? Or another color?
I do have a delicate elephant necklace. But I could do a chunky necklace instead if it alludes to circus somehow. I found a peacock scarf that appears to match....
I just would never wear animal print but that's just because it's not my style.
I would love to see a red sparkly dress on someone, or any kind of sprarkly dress but I would not wear one because I would not be able to pull it off.
Me either, TBH. I mean, I might wear it this one night and then stash it in my closet, but I have nothing animal print in my wardrobe already. All those cheetah print lovers would be all set on this theme though.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
Are you saying that your company not only has ridiculous themes, but Someone actually puts together a Pinterest board with ideas of what to wear??!!?? I’m gobsmacked.
I 100% would not do anything with this theme, and I would find the right person to complain to about the ridiculousness of this. I would point out the expense of asking anyone to go out and buy such nonsense.
momof2- it’s not that uncommon. A lot of work cultures think it’s fun and team-building. It’s not my cup of tea, but I can see my current company doing something like this for select groups, like leadership teams or employee network events. At my last employer, if they had done anything like this, you would have showed up in freaking circus attire with the red foam nose AND YOU WOULD HAVE LIKED IT OR ELSE. Lol. (There’s a reason I’m not there anymore.)

You would be the odd person out at this company if you were to complain like this. They are paying for the entire local office to spend a weekend away, with spouses and kids (if you want to go and if you chose to bring them), at a high end resort, and it’s a wonderful event. The themes are.. admittedly wonky, but even with the weird theme, you can literally wear whatever the hell you want and no one will care. Those who want to go big can go big, and those who don’t want to don’t need to.
ETA I went to these (same company, different locale) for years and I always was amused and annoyed by the themes. I skipped one local one-night holiday party since I was just over it compounded by theme being so fucking stupid, but the majority of people had a great time.
Yup, they are paying for an entire weekend away, so I don't mind spending $60 for an outfit. However, no kids allowed at this one which is fine with me.
The Fri night is in an odd location, so I called the resort and turns out it will be outside. Early June after 7pm might get chilly for me since I run cold so this is handy information to know. Saturday night is inside.
