Finally finished last night. I'm a total scaredy cat but I've loved this show from the beginning. I thought this season was going to be a challenge for me but everything I've watched has been right before bed and I've slept just fine.
Even with all the yuckiness in the Upside Down and Vecna's gruesome methods, the scene that made me squeamish was Hopper trying to slide his shackles off after taking several whacks to his foot/ankle.
In the overall timeline of things, did Eleven run away from the lab right after the event with 001 happened? That's what it seems like now.
Also, why did she not remember any of those events?
1. Yes, I think that is supposed to be the timing. oops guess not 2. Didn't the dr trying to get her memories back say that sometimes we repress things that were really terrible? I guess her brain immediately repressed the memories? Maybe we'll see something that explains that in Volume 2.
All of this made me want to go back and rewatch Season 1 because it's been so long.
Eleven did not run away after the massacre. I know they're making it seem like that, but it also very clearly happened in 1979 (the date is given multiple times when they flash back), and season one opened in 1983.
She repressed the memories.
YES Eddie definitely gives me Robert Downey Jr vibes! But not as strong as Billy and his Rob Lowe vibes were.
Yet more cult movie call backs. Joyce and Murray and the plane crashing in the snow was definitely Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The kid being pulled down in the lake was Jaws. Dustin & Co. throwing the knotted bedsheet through the gate to rescue Robin, Eddie, Nancy and Steve is right out of Poltergeist.

I’m puzzled by that because that seemed to have happened in 1979 and the first season was like 82? 83? I’m hoping July will have episodes about the gap.

The kids riding their bikes is clearly ET, which isn't horror but that is what the scenes are from or a call back to. The kids are even riding some of the same type of bicycles. Also ET was scary as hell as a little child.

It’s not 80s, but Susie says “hold onto your butts” right before she searches for the location of the lab, which is from Jurrassic Park.
It’s been too long since season 1, because I didn’t notice the continuity error with El speaking in the flashbacks.
I thought the El 70s scenes were a little confusing this season because some were supposed to be flashbacks but others were supposed to be memories I guess? They switched perspective in the flashbacks to make her look smaller (because she should have been like 7 or 8) but then in the memories of the same time she was 1986 sized El but she spoke in both I think?
I saw this about the talking which had some ideas but I don’t know if it makes 100% sense

The brain definite does this. I went with my mom when she drove him to the airport for his fight and I have no memory. My day picks up with dancing inthe basement with my sister and friends and then hearing my mom scream out.
And, when we had our car accident, H said right before we got hit, I said "Oh God!", but again, I have no memory of seeing the car coming at us, even though I must have. Just the moment of impact.
But, for those watching The Deep End, generally a person's brain will repress small segments of time, not year and years of abuse. That is not how memory works.
We just finished the 7th episode and I called the orderly being 001 a few episodes back. And I put it together who he is "now" noticing the damage to the kids bodies at the lab and current day hawkins.
Also I love that they worked the true Satanic Panic that went through this country in the 80s.

I am still terrified of ET
ET was the first movie I saw in the theater, and I was both fascinated and terrified.
For years. YEARS I belived ET lived in our unfinished basement, behind the refrigerator, and it was so scary 😐

How did Joyce afford a move to CA and that major upgrade of a house with a telemarketing job? Did Hawkins Lab have to pay her some money? In season 1 she couldn't afford a rotary phone without an advance from her boss.

I think I remember them talking about this, sort of, and that she was "relocated" so I'm assuming the lab or the government or something subsidized that move.

Way late to this, but we just finished. I could tell that any flashbacks in all of the other episodes were like a shrunken version of her. But in 7, it was like most of the time she was 1986 sized until the very end. Then she went back and forth. So there has GOT to be a meaning behind that. I can maybe buy inconsistencies within a season, but not an episode. These brothers are too detail oriented for that.
I’m sure Brenner had something to do with repressing her memory as well.
I’m guessing they’ll tie it up in volume 2, but is the theory that Henry was just a psychopath with mind powers, but it wasn’t until Elle killed him that the upside down portal was created? Because I see that, but then how did his dad have the visions/get “lost” while the daughter was killed?
And I can understand why he wants vengeance on Elle, but what is the Mind Flair’s beef with her?

I had all these thoughts! I’m hoping they wrap some up in July.
I agree they don’t really do things by accident and hide a lot of clues.
I’m also wondering if we are going to see more of the guidance counselor, she was a link to all the student deaths. She also was wearing a big skeleton key necklace which I’m hoping unlocks the clock they keep seeing!
Re: the thing with it switching back and forth between young El and current El, I thought it was just kind of shifting perspective because she was kind of reliving her past memories. So sometimes she would see little El, but she was re-living them as current El. And I was kind of guessing that thing about her speaking is that maybe the event with her and 001 kind of regressed her somehow and she didn't speak much/at all after that event. I wasn't seeing it as an inconsistency but more so like this crazy traumatic event that changed her. Or, like PP mentions, Brenner tinkered with repressing that memory and repressed other abilities too.
My H kept saying the young version of El was like bad CGI or something, but I saw awhile back a behind-the-scenes shot and I was like, no dude, that's another actor. Crazy good resemblance. www.glamour.com/story/stranger-things-young-eleven-not-cgi

I'm curious about this too... I think maybe he was just toying with his dad's mind with his powers then? I was thinking when El pushed him it created/opened the portal too... but I'm wondering if that incident actually created the upside down?
Hated this season. But I am admittedly not a sci fi fan. I like the series a lot better when it was more an ET like story line and not this weird Russian torture and kid torture thing.

My husband and I also thought Dustin's girlfriend's older sister looked a lot like Ally Sheedy (Breakfast Club).
