I think sillygoosegirl expressed what I’m feeling. I’ve realized what a profound impact these positions are, whereas I never really gave it much thought before. I probably deserve a lot of shit for taking a “this doesn’t affect me” attitude of privilege. But, I’m trying to do better.
and TW for the below: There is a guy I knew in college who is on his local school board. And, aside from 90s college fraternity attitudes on sex and consent when drunk, he is also a Pepe frog fan, maybe Q, too. And the fact he is on his school board makes me ill. To the point I’ve considered mailing photos to his local paper.
We need your (sane) vote here in Howard. We’ve got some crazies in the running for BOE and I’m afraid because of the volume of signs I see for one where this is going… :-(
Would you mind PMing me as well? I'm also in Howard and don't have kids.

Feel free to PM me with endorsements, or “not this one thinking you are supporting a rational female candidate”

I mean, or we could just talk about it out loud here because there's like half a dozen of us and I want to know too. LOL
I've gotten to the point where I've put half the candidates in my no pile, but I still need to choose between the remaining 4. (we've got two seats open if anybody is curious)
I'm curious which signs you're seeing a lot of. I've only gotten as far as skimming everyone's websites, but haven't dug in more.
So far eliminated Adler, Chen, Dreisch and Newberger. Newberger being the odd one out on that list because my reason for crossing him off is that I was annoyed at how DEEPLY vague his website is. I couldnt tell where he actually stood on several items.

I sent a bunch of links PM wise that I'm not sure I want to link here for traffic purposes but basically my opinion is to stay far far far away from Dreisch, Adler and Chen. McCoy and Newberger are apple endorsed. I've worked with Ricks with PTA stuff and I think she's competent. Hotopp I like because she's a scientist. I think Monique Richards is too new to the county (in my opinion).

The first part of my PM was pretty much that the teacher’s union recs are McCoy and Newberger. The second part I’ll PM you as well.
I’ve seen the most Chen signs. They’re everywhere. 1 Dreisch, 1 Newberger. A Facebook ad for Adler.

FWIW, I think I settle on McCoy and Newberger 😁 I also really like the scientist, Hotopp, but I’ve heard she said some crappy stuff with the last redistricting (from multiple sources).
I have not paid any attention to signs (I don't get out much, lol) but I am in Howard too so this is helpful! If there is anything additional that was shared in PM and not "out loud", I'd love a PM too. I really need to do some serious research before the election - I am undecided (and largely uninformed) on most of what's on the ballot, but of course plan to change that before voting.
I don't have kids but I get involved in school board elections. 1. It's my tax money too 2. I have friends with kids in the district 3. Even if we never have kids we still benefit from a good school system with property values, etc. 4. Society as a whole benefits from children who receive a good education by well-paid teachers with the resources they need, where students who need extra assistance can receive it, where struggling students can be supported, and where all children are respected and cared for.

This is such a good question to ask, because I didn’t care one bit about this stuff before having kids and I should have.
But now that I’m paying attention, as a sane adult, I’m flabbergasted seeing some of the candidate answers to how they will vote and how they want kids taught in public schools. I and we are still living in this society with the kids in school now as they are growing up. So I want them to be taught skills and values that I agree with, or at least don’t violently disagree with.
My local school board has at least 3 trustees who do not currently have kids in school. Yes, PLEASE pay attention and vote even if you don’t have kids in the schools!
The only political sign I’ve seen in my neighborhood is Deb Jung, so not BoE. But, my neighborhood could read like the title of this thread. We are the youngest people in the houses we can see from out yard (so, maybe 10-ish surrounding homes) but 10 years. The neighbors relish the “no trick or treaters” status. So yeah… I don’t think BoE is on many peoples minds anymore. I only see small ones at holidays, when they come visit the grandparents.
H and I use to kind of wish we could move to a 55+ community bc they had practical houses for our needs and good amminities. But we weren’t 55. And we accidentally moved to one anyway 😂
It was about 10-15 years ago, but an Upstate NY community had a problem where a group of people banned together, took over the school board and voted severe cuts across every budget line. The purpose was to drive down school taxes while they sent their own children to private school.
Local folks (so many if us 😬) - I have convinced my H this is important. He isn’t registered for a party so this is his only election. And he went with a couple endorsements. Or rather, he plans to. It’s 7:15pm and early voting closes at 8pm. But he says he is going.
So...one of my local folks remind me, is it the top 4 that get to be on the ballot for the general?
For people not in our county, we had a list of 8 for two open spots - results are the top two candidates that are actually good are #1 and #2, the next three are the crazy cakes in decending order of least to most out loud crazy, and then the "would also be fine, but first two were my first choice" folks are arranged at the bottom. Which...is ok I guess, but...I was hoping it wouldnt even be that close.
How did the similar characters in BOE races across the state do? mala

In CC its the top 6 for 3 seats go to the general election. Apparenlty only about a quarter of voters voted this time, hopefully turn out will be better in November. If these asshats win I will legit cry.
Edit The top votes is reelection of pur good sitting BOE member. #2 is a new good canidate. #3 is a homephobic ass. #4 is a good one ahead by a hair with #5 and #6 both homophobic asses very close behind.

This feels like a good place to drop my concerns. We have a moms for liberty candidate running in my area. Homeschool mom, moved to our area less than a year ago. She has been endorsed for this “apolitical” position by our piece of shit governor. With that, I think she can win. It is heartbreaking.

Local candidates often win by tiny numbers of votes. If you have the time or resources - reach out and find out how to help the candidates you like!!
eta: But also *hugs* because it SUUUUUCKS. Just the fact that my very blue, diverse, accepting little haven even has these people running hurts my heart. These people are our neighbors and it's not fun grappling with that.
