The stores can code each item for whatever category(it’s) they fit. They do that for fruits, veggies, WIC, taxable, non taxable, etc etc etc.
So, whenever you scan your HSA or FSA card (or your WIC card here), it only applies those funds to items that are eligible at that store. Most large stores are up to date with the current federal allowances.
Wowwww. This is a very Reading Rainbow “the more you know” moment for me. I had no idea.

So... I thought it was going to do that at rite aid, as did the associate. I ended up using my HSA for a pepsi and it was approved. 🤣

My receipts from CVS or grocery stores will say "FSA" or whatever eligible. I assume that's how the items are coded. I'm glad that non-FSA items got approved. I'm also super jealous of anyone who doesn't have to provide a blood sample and promise to donate their first born to have FSA approved. I tell myself every year I'm going to stop because it's such.a.pita.

I wonder if there's a difference between HSA and FSA approval stuff. I don't know. I'm fine if the HSA bank comes back and says no give us back this money, but I'm cautiously optimistic since it IS a medical office. I'm not out here trying to buy a Prada bag.
I'm having my laser treatment this morning for the broken capillary on my nose! I really hope it makes a difference, I'm hanging my whole day on this LOL
To follow up, the bad news is that I won't see any results for a couple of weeks and will likely need 1-2 more sessions so it's not going to look magically better for vacation. The good news is that I joked about using my HSA and the assistants were like, "If it's a credit card, go ahead and try it. Lots of patients do and no one has ever said it didn't go through." So I figured what the heck lol. We'll see.
This has worked for me twice! The FSA debit card thing. Jury out on the laser for broken capillaries. I need a couple more sessions because I had a lot.

My dentist office jokes when I pay $25 - 50 for the extra floride treatment that it's not enough to go to the Bahama's. At this point I'm so used to asking for the 'Magic receipt" that I just get one everywhere. Only place I've had good luck paying with the card and not providing a receipt is getting a prescription, but I guess that's clear what I'm purchasing?
