I'm surprised Amsterdam is #8 and not higher since I feel like that's all I've been seeing from the travel sites I follow.
I feel so lucky that our flight home from Rome to Newark on United had no delays at the end of May. Although our flight issues on the way there was a nightmare. We were supposed to fly from NOLA to Newark the day before then fly Newark to Venice. Our flight from NOLA to Newark cancelled about 8 hours before the flight with no other options for us to get to any other airport in the Northeast on time. So we had to pack up the kids and drive 22 hours straight from New Orleans to be able to make our flight from Newark- Venice. (in-laws were watching the kids in Philly which is why we had this schedule at all). After all that- the universe owed me a good flight out of Europe lol.
How are they going to fix this mess?! Restrict the number of flights offered and hike the price to make up for lost capacity? Actually hire people to meet demand? Suffer this insanity into infinity until people just give up and don't travel unless absolutely necessary?
The one I am most worried about is the Barcelona flights as it's ryanair. I keep telling myself that the big airlines have issues too! Fortuantely, we dont have anythign reserved for the day after travel for most of the flights and we do have travel insurance.

wise_rita , Heathrow is capping the number of passengers allowed to go through the airport this summer.
"London's Heathrow Airport is capping daily passenger numbers for the summer and telling airlines to stop selling tickets as it steps up efforts to quell travel chaos caused by soaring travel demand and staff shortages.
Britain's busiest airport said Tuesday that it's setting a limit of 100,000 passengers that it can handle each day through September 11. The restriction is likely to result in more canceled flights even after airlines already slashed thousands of flights from their summer schedules."
mrsukyankee I saw that! Financially and long-term that doesn't seem like a viable solution...unless they hike prices quite a bit to make up for it.
Another thought/solution: utilise smaller, less frequented airports to move bodies. Vienna? Budapest? Birmingham? Do your part and route a plane or five per day to the US or Middle East or wherever. I'm sure that's fraught with problems but expecting Amsterdam and London to carry most of the load is clearly not working anymore.
I'll be interested how far this mess will go into the future once the industry finds their post-Covid new normal. I don't expect demand to wane at any point; this is permanent and not a short-term pressure release after the pandemic.

We arrived in Amsterdam on 06/29 without issues. Flew from there to Crete on 7/7 early in the morning (5:30). It was already pretty crowded but not too bad. We were there about 2.5 hours before departure and had plenty of time when we got to the gate. No problems when we came back on 7/15. Then when we flew back to the US on 7/20 it was a disaster. Our flight left at 1:00PM and we were there at 9:00. It took us over two hours to check our bags, go through security and passport control. We had to check our bags because we brought some wine from Greece. When we arrived in the US only 1 out of 4 bags made it onto our flight. We were able to pick up bags 2 and 3 the next day at the airport and filed a claim for the last one. It arrived yesterday (4 days late) but luckily in one piece.

I know it's not on the list but we flew through Copenhagen on Wednesday and it was empty. We were the only people in line at passport control and it was all very calm for the most part. Our flight was delayed leaving IAD and getting into CPH so we missed our connection but SAS automatically rebooked us on the next flight to Milan. We just walked right up to the transfer center desk (again no lines and empty) and got new boarding passes.
Our flight from CPH to Milan was maybe 1/3 full and Milan airport was also relatively empty. It was all pleasantly surprising.
