How do you guys with older kids remember this stuff? I've wiped out the memory of at least the first year.
Lol, exactly. I always say on here I have a horrible memory because people here will be like my 4th grade teacher Ms. Walker and I sat next to Charlie and I’m like what?! I don’t even remember my med school professors names. Anyway, I wonder if I’ll have a better memory when it comes to kid stuff but I highly doubt it!
Multiple bottles of infant tylenol AND advil. You never remember to buy more until you need it.
Sound machine with continuous play.
Arms up swaddles (so many are arms in and both my babies HATED them )
OXO or Ubbi wipe containers (they have a weighted piece that makes it easy to get one wipe at a time so you're not wasting a giant string or trying to separate them while your kid is flailing about sticking their feet in poop).
A massive water bottle for her - like big.
This tap on/tap off portable and rechargeable night light. It's seriously the shit since you can adjust the brightness AND the warmth of the light. www.vava.com/products/vava-baby-night-light
Amazon gift card for all the little things she'll forget and need to order urgently.
Also, this is totally not a need to have but MIL got us a Lovevery toy box subscription for DS2 and it's seriously amazing. He loves all the toys and they really do support and encourage the developmental stages that they're in at that time. They're a bit spendy but IMO totally worth it. I basically never have to buy other toys for him because he always has age appropriate ones around. And they have really good resale value and are easy to unload on marketplace once baby is past that stage. I swear I am not affiliated with Lovevery, I just have been so impressed by everything we've gotten from them. We also had the playmat and got the block set for DS2's 1st birthday and the play tunnel.
Ditto the bum brush, or even just a tiny silicone spatula. I used to buy them at target for baby gifts, but now they don’t seem to have them anymore. But absolutely do one of those. It makes applying diaper cream so much easier and you don’t have to scrub it off your skin.

Honestly I only remember mine because I give it to everyone. Whether or not they want it....
Same. My go-to shower gift has been the same exact thing since my first kid was born and I realized what people actually need.
It’s a cloth basket that they can use around the house to store diapers/wipes in a location away from the baby’s room, filled with saline mist, gas drops, infant Tylenol, windi tubes, nose frida filters, silicone spatula (for diaper cream application), a tube of triple paste (which was our favorite diaper cream), motherlove nipple cream (if breastfeeding), a pack of pacifiers, and books (usually stuff my kids are into now/recently).

In my experience, you won't. My son is 3 and I ALREADY forgot a lot of baby things and had to re-learn them with my daughter.
My youngest is 8 and all I remember loving and needing was a rock and play (now banned) and 106726 burp clothes that were actually Gerber prefold diapers (most babies aren't as spitty as mine).
I do remember my 4th grade teacher's name (Mrs. Bennett) and who I sat next to (Jennie WITH AN IE NOT A Y). I cannot remember what I ate for dinner on Thursday.

I was coming back in to say this now that I found my box and know the brand name! Great way to do things in the middle of the night without lighting up the whole house.
#2 yes that is an important feature; also one that doesn't run on batteries (as they get eaten up quickly).
#3 Love to Dream is the bomb
I've never heard of these wipe containers before and I am intrigued.
Like wanderingback, I feel like Mom gets so much stuff for baby but nothing for herself and she’s the one who just incubated a whole human. I generally will get self care items. Really soft robe and slippers and a Grub Hub or Door Dash gift card are the basics and then I add stuff depending on how well I know her (candles, hand held massager, wine, etc).
I have a bunch of stuff related to pumping too but that may not be necessary for her. My son was 5 weeks early so I’m still doing a lot of pumping as opposed to just breastfeeding
Way to sneak this in here! Congratulations!
Haha, thank you! I was going to DM you. I figure I don't post much enough to do an announcement, but he arrived June 12 at 35+1 weeks. He's doing amazing, despite being early. I got Covid despite being vaxxed and boosted, and first it gave me preterm labor at 33+4, and when we stopped that, I ended up with low fluid. Thankfully the extra time helped and I got steroid shots for his lungs.
Also, for the parents, some meals they would like. My husband's family brought meals every couple days and it was nice not having to cook when dealing with a newborn and being first time parents. After a week, we were more into a routine and could manage.
for wanderingback and the OP's sister: I didn't believe my midwife who said we should get the expensive organic 7th generation pads for after delivery but holy shit they made such a difference. SO MUCH SOFTER. Gift those, a gift card for food delivery and a nice nursing bra all for mom. Muffins or something hand held for snacks and breakfast.
For baby I agree that the frida starter kits, as well as the butt brush for diaper cream, and a digital thermometer were some of our most used items for new baby.
Amazon or Target gift card. I think NIGHTLY for MONTHS when I was up in the middle of the night with him I was ordering shit that could potentially make parenting easier.
